What does /vr/ think of the original metroid? I'd say it aged well as morrowind imo meaning you are a casual if you say it hasn't aged well

>> No.1496074

I think it's a fully enjoyable game, but there are a few really annoying design flaws, like enemies being able to go through doors and damage you while the screen transitions. Things like that make it difficult for newcomers to really appreciate it, but overall I do like it a lot.

I always thought it was funny how the enemy damage sound is a farting sound effect.

What the hell are you talking about? /vr/ doesn't ever stop sucking Metroid 1's cock talking about how it's the second coming of Christ and how every other Metroid game was a huge disappointment in comparison. The real question is just what the hell's so great about it.

Ocarina of Time takes shit all the time for being "overrated". You don't know the meaning of "overrated" until you've seen people fellate this 8-bit piece of trash.

>> No.1496702

Not a fan. I don't particularity enjoy stopping to bomb every single pixel to make sure I didn't miss anything. Got really tedious after awhile. Staring with a small amount of energy every time you start it up is a mild annoyance as well.

pretty much every other metroid game improved on the first. Whether its making exploring more complex with more movment abilities, having a greater variety of enemies, having better atmisphere (metroid 1 doesnt even have a fucking background) or just improving the level design so that its not looping the same rooms over and over.

Lets also not forget all the stupid parts of metroid 1 like how ridly has the most obvious dead zone in the history of boss fights, enemies can bug and go through doors, etc.

The only thing metroid 1 does better than any other in the series is that its more difficult than the other metroid games. However this isn't really praiseworthy. If you want to play a challenging run n gun theres many games that are harder or have more refined combat than metroid.

True, but unfortunately those games don't have the whole open-world non-linear thing going for their replayability.

Atlantis no Nazo and Genpei Toumaden are far superior adventure platformers from the very same year and after having played both, the lackluster reception of Metroid in Japan is very understandable to me.

They seemed to stop giving a shit about Metroid right after Super. Then they shelved the series, brought it back for two GBA games, two gamecube games, one subpar wii title, and one -really- shitty wii title.

The only problem I have with the original Metroid is that you always start with 30 health, even if you have several energy tanks. It can easily take a half-hour or more to kill enough enemies to recharge your health, and you have to do this every time you start the game from a password. It's really not that big a deal, but it usually keeps me from picking up where I left off. One or two rooms meant to fully recharge your health would have been a nice feature.

Actually, what I would have really preferred is the ability to get a password without dying, perhaps as an option at elevators. Then your health could be saved in the password.

Is it really that casual to think that the game's design is extremely archaic, to the point that it is offputting to people that aren't used to early NES games?

Depends on what you mean by "near the end".

If you went Ridley first and died in Kraid's Hideout, then sure. That needs grinding and really slows down the game.

Dying after Kraid though?
Metroids drop stupidly high amounts of health, you're likely to max out on your way to MB even if you have 4-5 tanks without having to farm unless you run completely out of missiles and have to farm for 25-30. Even so, the Zebetites stay dead even if you die, so every consecutive visit to MB will require fewer missiles down to a minimum of 32 (and metroids drop packs of 30 when they die).

That's because "player possesses this item" and "this item exists in the world" are two different bits.

I love the first Metroid. I played it for the first time in 2011 and I was surprised how playable it was. It has easily the best music of all the games. It was a bit weird at first I thought that there was no map, but I quickly found the fun in drawing my own map; it added to the exploring part of the game even further.

My only big problem with it is how you have to start each session with filling up your HP. It is tedious and makes you sort of not bothering to start playing, but when that's over then it's all fun (till you die of course, then you have to go all over again).

I also liked the difficulty. I played Super Metroid for the first time this year and was a bit disappointed how easy it was. I cleared every boss on the first try.

All in all, Metroid 1 is really great game, easily one of the best on the NES.
