At least they were nice enough to offer a suicide ditch.

>> No.1491525

Does that count as artificial difficulty?

>> No.1491528

Agreed. I actually liked the bad warp zones. It made the world feel a bit more sinister.

You shouldn't even be trying to use the warp zones anyway.

No, and it actually serves a purpose, if you're chasing highscores it allows you to return to earlier parts of the game to build your score up easier.

You don't really need a suicide ditch when you have a time limit.

No one plays mario for score.
Its not a particularly intersting scoring system since its a very linear one.

its put in there for the same reason there are dead ends in zelda dungeons.

There really isn't much relevancy to the negative warp zone. You reach it once have a great laugh about it, kill mario. Than you never go there again. Its a minor aspect of the game.

The Warp Zones in 2 were meant to mess with the head of anyone who was used to using them in the original.
Thats why they were put in, stop trying to over complicate it.

No.

One of the most basic tenets of game design is to build expectations (which was done in SMB1) and then dash them.

Using it to get high scores would be seen as an exploit rather than an intentional design choice.

I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure my buddy's NES cart of SMB/Duck Hunt still has my brother's high score from when he beat it like 4 or 5 years ago.

Its impossible since it has no saving capabilities at all, and I doubt he kept nes running for 4-5years straight.

>> No.1496292

>>1495426
Not on the original cart, but is there a way to modify it to be able to save scores? You could always add a battery in I imagine, but how easy would it be to get the game to recognize and use it?

>> No.1496303

Actually reverse warps seem like a pretty good idea. Just keep looping through the first couple worlds getting coins and 1-Ups to build a nice stockpile of lives.

I know you can do the infinite life trick literally 5 seconds into the game, but if you can't get it to work or just don't want to feel like you're cheating this is a good alternative.

>> No.1496374

yeah there was a lot of subversion in smb2, lots of cheap tricks and jokes the designers played on you

i don't mind it that much since that flavor is so rare to see in a mario game and some of it is genuinely funny.

Always found it interesting how apparently most of the game's dickery comes from Miyamoto being in a really bad time of his life and basically just wanted people to suffer along with him. I wonder if any other game came out under similar circumstances for another person.

Eh? I always heard Miyamoto had no involvement in SMBLL Yes, I do call it the Lost Levels, fuck you weeaboos and it was mostly made by interns.

If you've ever played Zelda 1, you know those old men who live in caves, and give you items and stuff?

And sometimes they just take your money (which is already kind of a dick move to begin with)?

Well in the second quest, there are old men who force you to choose between losing money, and losing a heart container.

>> No.1498604
