This series is why I started working on learning Japanese. I played the two OG games on the GBA, which actually made it to the US, and I was hopelessly hooked. As far as the retro titles go, you can't get much better than Alpha and Alpha Gaiden.

Honestly didn't see this one coming. It's pretty rare that a jRPG surprises me since their plots are usually rehashes of rehashes of rehashes and the "surprises" are foreshadowed in such an unsubtle manner that they're basically telling the player "later in the game, this exact scenario is going to happen, so you should prepare your anus."

Huitzil is awesome. Love how all of his attacks involve some sort of creatively-animated transforming weapon gadget. His animation was so intense that it actually had to be downgraded in each successive game in order to keep things running smoothly. His best-animated incarnation is in the very first game where he's an unplayable boss, and if you use cheats to play as him and do a Huitzil mirror match you'll occasionally get NES-style sprite flickering because there's so much going on on screen.

Huitzil was also one of the characters famous fighting game player Daigo Umehara made a name for himself with. One famous anecdote is that one day he went on a winning streak with Huitzil that actually broke the game's wins counter; it rolled over from 255 back to 0.

Also I've always had a fondness for Zynk from Shining Force 2. He may not be the strongest character of the game, but I do love adding him in the team whenever I play again.
