Hello, /vr/, let's have a thread about cancelled/unreleased retro games and general what-could-have-beens.

About a year ago I've posted here searching for a specific late '90s full-3D FPS game that I've played a demo of as a kid, well guess what, somehow I've finally found it! It's called Seed, made by a hungarian team called HumanSoft, and while the demo felt rather primitive, the premise looked rather promising. But alas, apparently it never came into fruition.

Anybody else familiar with this game? I felt like sharing the notion of this game with you since my search is over now, so here's some more info about it for your leisure:
>Seed fuses the viewpoint of a 3D shooter and the elements of a traditional platform game. It offers that ""inside"" first-person view to what is happening with the player, but with a twist: in Seed, the whole body is visible, because it casts a lifelike shadow.
>In a platform game or in any other near-combat game, you must be able to ascertain your position. Without this, you would have no idea where a punch would land or if a slow-moving projectile, customary in platform games, has hit any part of your body. Knowing exactly where you are is especially important during jumps, as you need to know the edges of the platform. Because the player's shadow is visible in Seed, all the criteria are met as far as orientation is concerned, yet you have a first-person view that you can take advantage of. With a first-person view such as this, you can better ""feel"" all the forces of nature, such as currents, acting on you; the sudden jolt or spin of a platform has a more realistic effect as you follow its movement with your own eyes.

Seems to run fine in Windows 7 64-bit.

I remember seeing it on 3DSL (http://3dsl.game-host.org/shooter/game/1995)) some years back, never tried it as I didn't think a test demo would be worth the time. But it seems important to you, and does sound interesting, so I'll give it a shot this weekend.

Thanks for recommending it!

>Anybody else familiar with this game?
not really. Plus, the fps genre was already huge back then, so one more...

There's close to nothing to "play" in the beta, but it's still kind of fun to imagine what could've rose up from this game. Probably not the next Quake or Unreal, but maybe something on par with Chasm: the Rift would be enough. Some of the ideas seemed pretty nice; I like the idea of the "ammo bar" for the flamethrower being a fuel reserve.

As a Hungarian, I tried to find some info on it, but nothing turned up other than the project was restarted at leaast three times it was developed by freelancing programmers

>>1486006
Well that's certainly interesting. Am I correct in assuming that nothing tangible came out of that?

>> No.1486045

>>1486018

No, not really... The heavy workforce fluctuation of Humansoft of the time and the 'hop on-hop off' use of freelancers certainly hurt the project a lot.

>> No.1486061

>>1486045
Oh well, thanks for the info regardless. With games this obscure, every single mention of them is worth noting.

Slightly off topic but is it true The Flintstones was translated by a Hungarian poet who made the Hungarian dub have EVERY line rhyme in EVERY episode? A Hungarian told me that once and I was not sure if he was just rusing

>>1486135
Not him, but that sounds pretty amazing. A quick google and youtube search (don't know hungarian but can "recognize" it, so to speak) certainly supports this idea.

It is true, and it's hilarious, certainly gives the cartoon a whole different feel

There was going to be a sequel to Hired Guns by DMA Design (now Rockstar) that used the Unreal engine. It wasn't released because they couldn't find a publisher. However, the entire game was leaked by a graphics artist 7 years ago and is downloadable.

Turrican 3D
Holy shit, Turrican 3D...
There were countless attempts to program it, even in the form of a spiritual sequel of the franchise called Thornado, but in the end nothing ever came out of all the projects.

I posted these scans of The Diabolical Adventures of Tobu in the beta thread. Shame it was cancelled.

The teaser shots released for Prey in the 90's look nothing like the final game, and were pretty exciting for the time.

No kidding, I actually watched it in german before hearing the hungarian dub and it's like watching a completely different cartoon.

Well, it feels a bit rough around the edges, but I like the menu (walk around and operate consoles to access game modes and options) and the cyberspace.
The latter is almost creepy.

>tfw you realize The Flintstones has been a Honeymooners rip off all along
>tfw you forgot that you were ever interested in Star Odyssey until you're looking at your EGM 1992 buyer's guide and think "what ever happened to that game?" then you find out it got released in 2011 and sucks
Oh well, here on /vr/ you're always finding out about stuff anyway, no matter how much you know already. Pic related.
