Does anyone have a clear (without any notes) map of Metroid? I wanna play through the game and discover shit and make notes, but I'm too lazy to draw the whole map layout by myself.

>> No.1485581

Metroid Database has a bunch of maps available. However I can't recall if there are any ones without notes pointing-out what item is what. Once you've played the game hundreds of times knowing where stuff is just comes naturally.

There's a LUA script that adds a mini map to the game.

It's here. I think it's great, and it's a shame I didn't get to play the game at first while using it, so do that since you have the chance.

Well, nevermind, I just snagged a map that I liked and deleted every note on it. Good enough. Time to finally play through this game.

> Maximum energy tanks raised from 6 to 7
Start out with full health and missiles
Minimap and large map on pause screen, with mouse interaction (tooltips / click elevators to navigate between areas)

Looks pretty cool, but I'm not up to romhacks, this one seems like basically a cheat.

I honestly don't think you'll get a good Metroid experience playing with a map like that. Half of what makes it good (and especially the original Metroid) is navigating these endless tunnels and just as you thin you've finally hit the bottom of the game world you bomb another hole in the ground that takes you down a equally long hole with a seemingly infinite amount of doors going every which way out of it. I mean, with a map like that you'll never find yourself questioning just how long this tunnel of bugs will take you, if it will attach to this other shaft that according to your notes it LOGICALLY SHOULD, if this corridor that looks identical to the one you just came from is another limitation of the NES' memory or if you'rr somehow going in circles and... well you get the picture. Really, THIS map is all you really need.

If that's too old-school for you then play the Zero Mission remake. It's a good remake.

Also play the FDS version if you still plan to play the original version for better sound, music and enemies. You can fast-forward the loading screens in emulators

I suppose that sounds interesting if I imagine playing it years ago with no other game choices, but now I just wanna have some fun and not get stuck for hours. Thanks though.

But that's the thing. What I just said is more then half the fun of the original Metroid even dare I say ALL the fun. Otherwise its controls are clunky, forces you to grind whenever you die, becomes a cake walk most of the time when you find the screw attack and is an exercise in almost pure luck others (mostly for the bosses).

It's honestly completely pointless to play it when you already have the complete map sitting in front of you.

So I found out why "Justin Bailey" Samus has never been acknowledged by Nintendo in any way shape or form.
You know, the purple leotard and green hair combo?
That was added later when Metroid was ported to the NES.
Which means the Japs never got to actually play as suitless Samus.
Oh, and another thing, DONT play the FDS version of Metroid, sure some of the music is better but the beam and door sound effects are grating, and Metroids sound like phones going off.

most fds games w/ fm synthesis sound better, including metroid

only one that's actually worse is kid icarus

hate the load screens though, dumb that apparently no emulator can hardware accel. through those quickly

Nestopia can. You want to increase the fast forwarding speed to max in the settings though. And yes, FDS Metroid is definitely the best OG Metroid.

Zero Mission ruined Metroid anyway. Part of the fun was in exploration. But Zero Mission tells you precisely where you need to go and what you should be looking for each step of the way.

Why do people call it "Justin Bailey Samus" when she has green hair?

The green hair is just how you look after you get the Varia suit. You don't need any code for that.

There is a rather famous password that allows you to start the game as suitless Samus with most of your powerups.
This password became so well known that, until the zero suit came along, "suitless Samus" became synonymous with "Justin Bailey Samus"

I really don't have much of a problem with Zero Mission. It's just that in the process of making it Super Metroid Fusion (which in itself is not a bad thing) most of what makes the original interesting to play to this day got lost in the process leaving us with a fun little ambitious rom hack but not much else. It's really a lot better then it should me considering just how much they changed it compared to the original.
