Action/Adventure is my favorite genre of videogames, so let's have a thread about that. Recommend Action/Adventure games and dig up some obscure or relatively unknown gems of the genre.

A name of that game right there would help.

It's Monster World 4 for the Megadrive. Has been fantranslated, but the Virtual Console release actually has an official translation now, too.

There's the obvious stuff, I.E, Metroid, Zelda, etc, but if I am to recommend something obscure.

Elemental Gimmick Gear for the Dreamcast is fairly under-appreciated.

It's pretty damn good and has some great music.

Popful Mail plays a lot like Monster World IV except it's larger. The only thing I hate is the GOD AWFUL DUB the english version has.

Jump to 10:17 to see some gameplay and also an example of the terrible dub I'm speaking of

I never hear anyone talk about Silhouette Mirage.

I love that game. Takes some super getting used to, though.

The SNES version is totally different. It's also terrible. Just looking at that screen scrolling goddamnit. You can't see shit comming your way

Actually, the definitive version is the PC-Engine version, considering that is the most faithful to the PC-X8 versions.

Yes. It's too bad, the PC-Engine version is really fun compared to the one we got.

Anex86 in this day and age? The thing hasn't been updated in nearly a decade.
Does the PC98 port offer anything over the PC88 aside from taking up less disks?

CG scenes have more colors and it uses higher resolution so everything looks crisper.

I've downloaded another emulator, and it offers nothing else besides a more complicated interface. PC-98 games are overwhelmingly either text based games with still images or...not very good, so its not like there are more than a handful of games I play on it.

I fucking love the Monster World/Land games and IV has an amazing soundtrack

Doesn't mean it's not still fine.

and besides, none of the PC-98 emulators runs everything properly, so you're going to end up having to use it anyway at some point for some games

To move past the droves of butthurt segites complaining about Popful Mail, some of my favorite not-often-mentioned action-adventure games are:

Rastan (arcade/mame, PS2/Xbox) - the ultimate manly sidescrolling barbarian adventure. It will crush your balls before you get to the first boss.

Assault Suit Valken (SNES JPN) - play the translated ROM. Great sidescrolling mecha action with an epic space-opera-anime storyline.

Beyond Oasis (Genesis) - The Legend of Zelda, with more moves and more control. Probably the best-looking Genesis game, in my opinion.

Shining Wisdom (Saturn) - it's not bad, but it does feel a bit like a "poor man's Zelda." The running controls are cumbersome. The game can be fun though, so if you can find a cheap disc floating around, or just emulate it, you might have fun. More buttmad sega fans will talk about the "butchered" translation, that you will most likely 99% not give a shit about it.

Landstalker (Genesis) - the isometric perspective takes getting used to, but after a bit of playing you start to appreciate a really competent and fun action adventure game.

Dark Savior (Saturn) - the pseudo-sequel to Landstalker. Removes most of the combat (things are now restricted to one on one fights). I like the setting (hard-gay true-nigga thugland aka PRISON ISLAND). The emphasis on platforming and puzzle solving give it something of a breezy feel. The puzzles and platforming are rock hard though.

Alundra (PS1) - the pseudo-pseudo sequel to Landstalker and DS. Top-down perspective, more Zelda-esque. Great game, cheap on the system, and an excellent adventure all-around. Probably the best of the three. Another "translation" people might gripe about, but I think it's hilarious, and I want to have fun and enjoy myself when I play a game, not weep over its "super-serious" Jap-plot. Combat, platforming, and puzzles are really good.

I haven't played them, but I hear good things about the Arc the Lad compilation.
