My GameGear ran out of batteries today, but I think got about 8 or 9 hours of gameplay out of it.

So... /vr/ handheld thread?

>> No.1479605

Back when I had one, I would get around 5 hours of gaming out of it. But you are still better off just getting an AC adapter.

I use it portably though. like on a train or waiting at a station. I think it did quite well to be fair.

Old school portables with modern batteries are awesome. I got over 40 hours out of my original gameboy when I was using it for commute. Thats off normal supermarket alkalines too.

This.

>not using rechargeables for all retro handhelds.

I even use them in my GBC and that thing doesn't really eat away at batteries.

>> No.1479665

>>1479664
Hell even back then I used those as soon as they became a thing. Batteries aren't as expensive these days as they used to be though so I understand someone won't feel that much of a need to have rechargeable ones these days.

>> No.1479668

>>1479665
But it is still 8 dollars a pop for a 12 pack? You get you money back sooner if you buy rechargeable.

did you replace the cfl tube with leds? 9 hours on a game gear is LED-tier

What the fuck kind of hell-beast gamegear do you have that you got 9 fucking hours of life on it? I never got more than 3 or so out of mine, and I name you a liar until you can prove otherwise.

>> No.1479768

>>1479726
Well did you buy it off eBay from me after I modded it for leds?

>> No.1479773

Does anyone sell replacement battery covers for those things? Dug mine out of the attic, but the covers are long gone.

The Game Gear is much like the Virtual Boy, in that you can use it as a battery-powered portable, but you really shouldn't do so.

Pretty sure it takes the same power supply as a Genesis 2, and you should really get one if you're planning on any serious play.

>> No.1479803

>>1479729
Well there is no way I can prove it obviously. But I bought it boxed from a shop in Manchester about 2 weeks ago and didn't change the batteries once. I played it regularly in short bursts most if the time on trains and waiting in line at that Leeds thing.

If you want to call me a liar, that's your call.

Batteries have improved significantly since the 90s.

Rechargeables especially. Used to be you'd be lucky to get 0.6Wh out of a NiCd AA, whereas today you can get NiMH AAs that can hold 3Wh.

Decent disposable alkaline AAs contain around 3.5 watt-hours of juice these days.

You don't really notice improvements in battery tech over time because newer devices that draw more and more power keep coming out at the same time.

What games are worth getting for the GameGear? I have Sonic Triple Trouble and Streets of Rage 2, and that's all I've had since I was a kid. I really feel like an ass right now for making my parents buy me one and I never did much with it.

My father made me something like this for my game gear. It was great for when we were on vacation or long trips.
I would have a backpack with my Game Gear, battery pack, comics and a portable cassette player. I was never bored.
Thanks dad!

That was always my experience as well. That thing ate through batteries like they were nothing. I would assume that the lithium ion AAs are better than the old nickle cadmium we used back then though.

In the 90s, batteries were awful.

They're not that that much better, but it's not too much of a stretch to get 6-7 hours now instead of the 3-4 I remember.

although, you have to have done something else to that thing for 8-9, unless batteries got amazing within the last two years

>>1479812
Get Biomotor Unitron and King of Fighters R-2. Good times.

Oh, and Card Fighters Clash.

I need to buy one -- been emulating the thing and I want that clicky stick. The only thing stopping me is that it's got a GBC-style non backlit screen.

That's odd. People usually get wiser as they get older not the other way around.

When the headphone jack isn't inserted audio goes through an additional amplifying circuit that drives the speakers. That uses extra power.
