How about a thread for retro third party controllers, peripherals, and accessories? Share your horror stories, or tell us about that one pad or accessory that actually worked as intended.

When I first got my PS1, I got this controller along with it. I actually loved it at the time and used it over the official one. It was slightly bigger and fit my hands better, had rubber grips, and at the time I still wasn't sold on the PS1's d-pad (having been a Nintenkiddy all my life before that), and the one on this controller felt better at the time. Also, I was a sucker for transparent colors.

That said, it eventually got worn down and didn't work very well anymore. The sticks started feeling much too loose, and I believe one of the rumble motors stopped working. Eventually I just switched to the official controller and never looked back. I still have it lying around somewhere.

Anyone remember this shit? I remember reading about it in a magazine, and thinking it was probably super cool. Then my brother borrowed it from a friend who actually had one, and he didn't let me try it. But apparently all it is is a big subwoofer, so on fighting games, all it does is make your body feel bass directly, which I suppose would be good for fighting games with deep-sounding punches and such.

My GameBoy Color was a monstrosity from hell. I always played it with one of those adjustable magnifier/light combo things and with it plugged into a Shock N Rock (pic related). It was awesome to be able to play it in the dark with a huge battery life and rumble features, though, so it was worth it.

Basically it would translate sounds of certain frequencies into rumble for the "shock and rock" part, which was thankfully easy to turn off. This MadCatz controller (whatever version is currently cheapest, they're all the same other than branding) is awesome once you've modded it with Sanwa/Seimitsu parts. Very easy mod. Finished product is better than lots of expensive arcade sticks because it's smaller but still robust and heavy.

I know this isn't third party, but seriously, what was Nintendo thinking with this? That "dpad" design is something even MadCatz would never have thought of were they around back then.

I bought one of these when I was a kid. the concept is cool as it would let you map out button combinations to a single button so for example you could press a single button to do a Hadoken in SF2 or press a single button to do a fatality in MK. unfortunately the thing was a gigantic piece of shit that was barely functional at best. it was made by a company called STD which is fitting because using one of these control pads was about as much fun as a bad case of herpes.

I hate the fact that this controller looks so nice but is so lousy. Aside from having cheap feeling plastic (Though the rubber grip on the back is nice), the d-pad is absolutely terrible and barely allows for any kind of diagonal movement. That and R1/R2 and L1/L2 are in really goofy positions. You'd expect L1 and R1 to be the buttons the top of your index finger rests on for easy access, but instead the L2 and R2 buttons are in the inside and the L1 and R1 buttons are on the outside where the middle part of your index finger rests and it makes them really cumbersome to use.

But things like >>1475579 were wonderful. it made Megaman Legends playable.

Later on, I had >>1475880 and it was gdlk in Xbox games.

Even later still, I got a wired Xbox 360 (Not retro wahwah!) pad that had a switch on the back. It was a factory option, I could tell because the settings were imprinted in the plastic. I got accused of being a filthy cheater and modding my controller so many times, because I was playing using a controller that had a turbo switch. X360 LIVE gamers are a special kind of special...

Now I have a TE Fightstick, and it's literally the best arcade stick I've got outside of my actual arcade machines.

tl:dr Madcatz only MOSTLY sucks. At least once a generation they hit a homerun out of the park.

Putting cardboard around these controllers is a joke. They work, but they do not feel good.

The only third party controller I ever used was a Super Pad, and it was the greatest ever. It's like a Gamecube controller except for the C-Buttons. Molds well to the hand, easy reach for all the buttons, it was just fantastic.
It spoiled me to the point that I wouldn't use my friend's official controllers anymore; I don't know who created that messed up abortion of a controller, but I couldn't go back to it. I would wrap up the cord of my Super Pad and drag it around to their houses when we were going to play games. It was practically my constant companion when I was a kid.
Then, one day, one of my friends yanked the could while I was holding it, and it stopped working forever.
I... stopped playing N64 that day. Couldn't go back. Never did.
It was a sad day.

My brothers and I seem to be the only people that remember these, I can't even find any info about it online.

Some candy company during the NES era made these grape/strawberry suckers that were in the shape of an adult human thumb, and were packaged with a rubber covering. The idea was that you would remove the thumb shaped rubber covering from the sucker and you could then place that over your own thumb to prevent it from getting a callus/blisters from playing games for too long.

You would have to buy two suckers to get a cover for each hand, they were way too oversized for children so your thumbs would always slip on the controller or the rubber would bunch up between your hand and the controller, and the suckers tasted like cough syrup and were too huge to finish in one sitting so you either had to throw it away or put the thumb cover back over it to save it. This would then either make the cover so sticky you could never get it clean again or the rubber would meld to the sucker and rip when you tried pulling the sucker back out.

We bought a shit ton of these things despite them working like shit, but I think we just enjoyed the novelty of it. But I haven't met a single person yet that remembers these damned things or can remember who made them.

yeah, the Power Pad and nearly all games that used it were developed and published (in Japan at least, Nintendo of America republished some of them stateside) by Bandai. the only one that wasn't was Short Order / Eggsplode! which was developed by Tose and published by NOA which really means it was made by NOA since Tose just does whatever the publisher wants. seriously, listen to their VP:

>"Our policy is not to have a vision. Instead, we follow our customers' visions. Most of the time we refuse to put our name on the games, not even staff names."

anyway, Short Order / Eggsplode! is kinda weird. it's definitely not something you'd expected the Power Pad to be used for:

Pic is probably not the right one ("Air Flo" isn't really ringing a bell, but the analog sticks seem familiar), but my cousin used to have one like this with built-in fans.

Can't really tell you how good it was compared to the official controllers because he took terrible care of his stuff. He'd leave discs just lying around the house, face-up, face-down, FOOD smeared on them… And then he'd expect this clunky hand-crank "scratch remover" thing that required lubricant to work properly (which he'd long since run out of) to magically make the discs run. GUESS HOW THAT TURNED OUT

I wish I were making this up. It was depressing; he had some games I would've liked to borrow, but were so scratched to hell they probably couldn't be played and likely ruin the system if it tried to read it. Might as well try inserting a cookie with a hole drilled through the center.

I have the original King's Field complete in box, and looking on the inside cover and back of the instruction booklet you can see the developer's advertisement of Playstation products examples. The wrestling games from AKI used D-pad and joystick, though joystick only to taunt/activate special.

I know some shooters allowed simultaneous d-pad and analog stick, but yes, most games didn't know what to do with using both and just used one as an accessory to the other (the way that most games do nowadays with d-pads)

Gah, I've been meaning to get one of these so I can have analog control in Ridge Racer Revolution. Siiigh.

Don't only 2 games support it?

My favorite third party NES controller, the Joycard Sansui SSS. It comes with a headphone jack which is fucking sweet.

Back in 6th grade, I knew this kid who would steal any game you wanted for $5. This one time I went to his house and I learned that his older brother was doing the same thing. They had a ton of stuff all over the place. Back when the GTA PS2 games were in insane demand, they had two disk spools filled with them including the PS1 GTA games. When I asked them how much for one of the games, the older brother told me to take any one I wanted. [spoile]ALL OF THEM LOOKED LIKE SOMEONE USED THEM TO PAVE CEMENT[/spoiler]. On the second spool, I found GTA III almost untouched so I took it.

I remember the ads for this but never actually used one. Gimmick audio is dumb, but I wouldn't throw one of these away if I found one.
