And this, my friends, was the first /doom/ thread ever in /vr/, well, not *quite* the very first one, but it was the one where most people posted when the board was made (literally minutes after).

A bit of backstory: We all moved from /vg/ when we got the news about /vr/ being made, we were in our 2nd /vg/ thread since some of us moved from /v/* and it took me really off-guard since I wasn't sure about where should I keep posting. But yeah, Doom catched on and made /vr/ its home in less than a week.

*: (Almost all of us came from /v/, really; the thing was that we were having frequent Doom threads in /v/ at the beginning of 2013 and I suddenly felt the urge of joining in and fixing that one "Recommended WADs" pic -though I ended up fucking it up real bad with unnecessary tryhardness, anyway; I'll fix it one day, pinky promise!- and one day someone told me people decided to create a Doom general at /vg/, we lasted like, what, week and a half in /vg/?)

I'll share more stuff later on, right now I need to sleep.

We'd fall off the board well before we hit limit every time and the thread would have to remade whenever it happened.

We try to be polite here anyway, by keeping it in this thread, including other 90s fps, and waiting until we're on page 5 before making a new thread.

To preemptively counter any incoming shitposts asking about TSP, remember I stated I wouldn't hype up a release until it was done, which is why today was a "vague" estimate of when I wanted it to get done and never set in stone.

Some of you might be asking, "what the fuck Marty?", to which I give a good, heartfelt, "I'm sorry dude" to you. Truth is, Doom comes to me in waves, I get these huge creative spurts but then I just fall off and work on one of my other 9000 projects. I've half-completed most of the new features for the next release but at the moment I haven't found the push to actually finish them. >> No.1474958

There's a perfectly functioning board for all video games. But "general" type threads are prohibited on it, and /vg/ was created specifically for them.

Doom on /vr/ is tolerated, because /vr/ is slower than /v/, where generalshit used to occupy the first few pages at all times shortly before /vg/ was made. But these days I sometimes see 5-6 generals on /vr/'s front page, and recently there's been up to TWO doom general threads.

These are just /b/-grade socialization and imagespam threads. They really interfere with normal board usage.

>A planned addition is a specialized ACS menu system that allows selection of any level at any time (with some guidelines below) However, this in turn will require a boatload of coding as well as some special graphics that hopefully a certain someone will do eventually. The demo's episode menu is currently a hack and will certainly be replaced. The menu will also show some short information about the current map and will be returned to after each map. The menu will keep track of finished/unfinished levels, total time, and individual times for each level, for a bit of competition and the like. Although this will be tough to pull off, hopefully it'll be pretty cool anyway.

This is more a forum drama question if anything in regards to getting feedback (or dealing with some behaviors), I think it's fine to talk about it here as we're all anon and the threads move so fast there is no ego to linger around.
How can you differentiate between genuine criticism given out of a desire to help another improve and comments that are just stupid, mean spirited garbage in cases where it is not totally obvious?
>eg: "Ur a feggit, ur mod a shit"

Because some of the comments I've seen on the Doomworld and Zdoom forums are just stupid crap that I think comes from the mind of somebody who is not being mean as such, but just so sure that their idea is the best they will hang around telling everybody how wrong they are when nobody else really agrees with them.

Link related, I'd consider the comments made by Vaecrius not to be useless trolling garbage, but they are very "my idea of fun is totally correct and you're all wrong and I'll hang around to bang the wall about it very loudly" type comments.

I quite liked quake 1 and didn't mind quake 2, mind you it's been years since playing.

I just feel like he (Vaecrius) does not have much range/tolerance for different doom experiences and seems to think there's something wrong with playing a different style in doom and will make sure you know about it.

Eg: I've enjoyed Unloved but also Hell Revealed type mapsets, linear levels and non-linear levels and gameplay mods to boot. There is no be all end all experience for me, just different variations done well from a more technical POV.
It's why I could play the later levels of Alien Vendetta but then a few hours later be sneaking around cheeki breeki'ing people in a modded S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

The idea that "your map not only sucks, it sucks balls :D" if it will not play as a deathmath level just defies belief. Monsters fight differently to players, even if you make the level with only 1 player spawn and no objects for multiplayer, this apparently does not sink in. Fuel Devourer (from last cacowards) was great fun, but way too huge to be a good deathmatch level.

That said, some levels that function well as deathmatch maps are fun, but to imply it's a requirement for objective quality, as if.

I must have played the ending at just the right time for me as I quite liked it, though from a mapping POV I can see why people dislike it.
Maybe the author was a bit worried of thinking people would not like it all having the tone from earlier so thought "I have to have this big fight somewhere".

It reminds me of game publishers being like "add an [x] section" to devs thus throwing off the focus.

Unloved II does the opposite though and where you finish it (it's incomplete) you're left wanting to see how it pans out.

You HAVE to load an iwad. EVERY PWAD requires a copy of the game (an iwad) to run.

If you're playing a map set like Hellbound, run Doom 2. If you see nothing new, try it in Doom 1.

If its a gameplay mod like project MSX or Russian Overkill, run it in whatever levels you want, it'll work.

If it contains both levels and new weapons, again, try it in Doom 2 first. Most games use Doom 2 because by default you get SSG and all the new monsters.

There's not really many good ones, but Mosin Nagant's are pretty simple in their look and function, so it shouldn't be too hard to make.

The bolt-handle is, unlike on other bolt-actions, a straight knob, rather than a bent bolt-handle, like on a later Mauser or Springfield.

The most common model would be the Russian 91/30.

There's also the M44, a somewhat later carbine model, with a built in folding bayonet.

You'd reload the rifle with stripper-clips, but like any bolt-action rifle, there's no reason you can't individually load the rounds by hand.

I would certainly not mind if you were to make a full sized one, and then short it down to make the obrez, but that's up to you, if you're gonna make it that is.

Look at this .gif, it's from footage of a man who was involved in the Bosnian/Serbian war, notice how while he's goofing off in front of a camera with his friends, far away from the combat zone, he's still constantly threat scanning?

Granted, he's probably got a catch of PTSD, and statistically, he was probably involved in a war crime or two, but I digress.

Hey /doom/, how would YOU do a Doom Movie?

I'm probably thinking using the first few DOOM books before it went apeshit with the demons not being demons, and the acctual game/plot progression.

From a technical standpoint, you'd need more than one character. I'm thinking these:

Doomguy - GEE I WONDER?
Crash - I am completely serious here. Dunno what role she'd fill.
Chubbs - Here too. Could likely be the Fat-Kid of the UAC marines. too useless for anything but guard duty, And killing demons.
Phobos - Antagonistic role, dunno what he'd do.

Delta Labs Six.
For the UAC, it was originally their biomedical lab--as Mars became populated and people started taking part in the terraforming process, the new environments required a constant foray into new medical technology. Superserums, biofoam, medical kits, and more made it the hot topic for chemists and biologists to impress the world with. And, of course, when the teleportation experiments went wrong, it found extra use in holding a shitload of medikits.
John "Reaper" Grimm grit his teeth as he hung against the wall of the corridor just outside a doorway. Inside was the hospital mess hall, filled with the sounds of the wailing of the damned--all thanks to another portal. Another fucking portal. The teleporter to access the medical supply cabinet had been rerouted to Hell, and by the second more Lost Souls poured through.
John lifted up his G36, looking at the ammo display. 32 rounds, a little under half a magazine. He ran a hand over his holster, trying to count how many were left.
One, two...
Shit. He didn't have enough.

>> No.1476149

"Hey, Reaper!" He heard a voice, and turned to see a friendly face running down the corridor to meet him.
"It took you long enough." John said, grip relaxing on his G36. His eyes flitted at the doorway, shifting back away from it and over to his compatriot. "What've you got?"
The man grinned, lifting up his hand to rest on the brim of his baseball cap, the words "BEOS" proudly emblazoned on it. Perhaps not the most wise choice of attire for a security advisor, but Buddy Dacote never took his job very seriously--and everyone knew he didn't need the armor anyway. "C'mon, Reaper, relax a bit. I've got the goods, don't worry. Check it." He extended his burly arm, holding a large backpack stuffed to overflowing with a rocket launcher, a shotgun, and plenty of ammo. "We can't sit here and ogle the goods, but take all the mags you need to fill your hungry little bunny, and let's go in guns blazing. I already got in contact with the others--they're on the other side of the teleporter, we'll be swooping in on both sides."
John smiled dryly as he pilfered as many magazines for his assault rifle as he could, slipping them into his holster. The "others". Heh.
Having Flynn Taggart and Stan Blazkowicz cover them from the other side would make this easy.

Buddy pulled out a hefty rocket launcher from the deepest nethers of the backpack, resting it on his shoulders as he took up position on the other side of the doorway. He peered at the portal on the other end of the hall, shimmering, and holding up three fingers to count it down.
John emptied out his magazine and jammed in a fresh one, letting the ammo counter fill all the way back up to 65.
Buddy counted "two".
Lost Souls weren't particularly dangerous by themselves, but they were fast. They were fast, and they had an annoying gang mentality that mandated a lot more ammo than they needed--and that wasn't even getting into the especially aggressive Lost Souls, the "Type 64s". Type 64, his ass. More like Nightmare.
Buddy counted "one".
John flinched as he heard the portal whisper followed by the heavy stomping of hooves on metal...announcing the presence of now more than lost souls. It was one of the nobilities of Hell, now. A Baron? Knight? Duke? Lord?
Buddy didn't even seem phased. He simply swung a grenade through the doorway, then stepped in and knelt down on a knee, raising the rocketlauncher high and firing it.

>> No.1476161

The newly-arrived Hell Knight didn't even get to see what his opposition was before getting rocked with two massive waves of heat and force, the rocket colliding with the grenade and detonating both at once. He let out a roar of agony as the shrapnel tore through his skin, the waves of force liquifying his insides and splintering his bones, sending him back through the portal in pieces.
And with Buddy's opening, John charged in and started to follow suit. He whirled around, his training shining through as his G36 repeatedly sang, every shot hitting one of the millions of flaming skulls dead on in the forehead. The room became filled with a chorus of screams, of the Lost Souls now aware of this new aggressor, of John's as he swapped to full auto and started emptying bullets, and of Buddy's rocket launcher as he continued firing massive missiles at clusters of demons.

Such noise would not go ignored, however, and the portal started to shimmer again to herald the arrival of another crew of demons.
John clicked dry on his magazine, promptly ejecting it and booting away a Lost Soul to cover his reload. "Where are the others?! I thought you said they'd be here!"
"I said they're coming!" Buddy backed up against John, letting another rocket load into the barrel as he keeps a firm aim on the portal, letting his compatriot handle the legions of angry flying skulls.

Buddy pulled the trigger and let another rocket fly. It sailed through the air, the jet propelling it straight to its target--an unlucky imp who decided to be the brave point man was given barely a second to reconsider his decision before he found himself forcibly separated in another stream of heat and force.
"Shit." Buddy groaned. Of course they would send the weak one in first. The portal surged with life as more demons started pouring out in waves, and Buddy pressed his back firmly against John's to hold position, emptying out rocket after rocket against the waves of beasts that came in legions out of the portal.
"I bet you like this position, eh Reaper?" Buddy grinned, resuming his trademark banter. He removed one hand from his rocket launcher, letting the stock rest against his shoulder as he let the auto-reload work its magic, filling it with more rockets after firing. His other hand reaches behind him, sifting through the backpack to see what he could find. Chaingun? No. More grenades? No. Another rocket launcher? Eehhh... Shotgun? ...Shotgun. "I take care of the big guys, and you just have to deal with angry skulls!" With a quick movement, he whipped the 12-gauge pump-action death dealer out, bringing it to bear with the rocket launcher and giving it a sharp yank, letting the pump shuck itself before it fired in tandem with its explosive brother.
"Easy for you to say!" John punctuated with another five rounds from his G36 before quickly ejecting the magazine and jamming it into the mouth of another skull, giving it another boot away. His hand once again yanked back down to his holster, feeling for magazines--wait, what? Nothing? "I'm dry!" He yelled out and holstered his gun, swinging his fist up to slug a Lost Soul in the jaw, savoring the feeling of its bone breaking under his knuckles.

>> No.1476173

"Are you kidding me?" Buddy let the shotgun roar at an incoming Pinky, the shot shredding through the beast's grotesque face and tearing into its brain, cutting all the way down to the spine. "How many magazines did I give you?" He yanked the gun back, the slide racking back, and covered his reload with another rocket to dispatch a Cacodemon taking to the sky.

Before John could answer, the entire arena became filled with a green mist. Charged plasma energy whipped through the air, and the sound of demons screaming in agony as they vaporized became the only sound either of them heard for a few moments. Then...silence.
John waved his hand in front of his face, trying to brush away the smoke.
Buddy laughed, jogging on ahead to the teleporter. "Stan Blazkowicz! Flynn Taggart! You fuckers, you took long enough!" Once the smoke cleared, John could make out two other marines--his compatriots. Flynn waved back, but Stan passively held his still-smoking BFG9000, surveying the destruction.
"Sorry about the delay." Flynn said. "Stan's com went out. He's pretty much...entirely mute this time around."
Stan nodded, giving his helmet a quick slap.
Buddy groaned. "Seriously? Aauugh, couldn't have happened at a worse time."
Stan shrugged.

Another lab secured.

Fifty thousand more to go.

What about switch on pickup?

>> No.1476283

My take on Doom would be something a bit different, a play on expectations I suppose. We can start out the movie as a "military fuck yeah!" sort've thing. Our protagonist is a newbie in one of the UAC-supported military teams, with a pretty decent reputation in one of Earth's world wars. We see the Union Aerospace Military division kicking all kinds of ass in human conflicts, while getting the sense that these guys are really amazing at what they do.

So when the thinkable happens on Mars, then Phobos, our team of awesome military dudes is sent in to take back the base from the demon invasion. Our team encounters zombies, who are slaughtered effortlessly, and it's looking like things are going rather well. But then they start to encounter Imps, demons, even a mighty Hell Knight or two, and the ranks start thinning and thinning. Our protagonist, a strong, silent-type, starts rightfully losing his mind, the carnage the otherworldly beasts have brought is unthinkable, and it's clear that the demons are playing mindgames with our hero. Our standard "fuck yeah!" action movie is taking a bit of a horror dive as we see the protagonist lose himself, slowly but surely.

After watching demons brutally torture and mock a helpless civilian, our hero completely snaps. This entire conflict he had been fighting demons with his human training, holding on to that last bastion of sanity, that tiny hopeless sense of justice. If he wanted to come out of this alive, he had to let his humanity go, and fight unhinged. Immerse himself in the carnage and maybe even become a demon himself (figuratively speaking of course)

So now our hero is more like a toned Doom comic guy, kicking ass and clearly enjoying it, maybe a bit too much. I figure the last fight would be a 1v2, with the bruiser brothers versus our hero who is on some crazy berserker rage. Of course, we end with E1M8's ending of our hero dying, but finding himself somewhere else...?

I think you could pull a lot of ideas from the old novels, yeah.

As hokey as they were, Fly and Arlene kind of grew on me. The first book I'd say is definitively a fun read and you could take details and plot elements from there (besides the demons turning out to be aliens thing, which, while not inherently poorly presented, just isn't Doom).

Could add a bunch of gunplay and gun porn, show characters reloading, show a couple of angles of ejection-ports, show some shots through the sights of the gun, show pulsing muzzle-flashes, lighting up dark areas, the loud noise of a gun fired inside of a concrete/metal bunker being incredibly deafening.

The Spider Mastermind with the 20mm Gatling canon, the SIGCOW, the pistols, the shotguns, the chainsaw.

License a bunch of 90's rock, metal and grunge for the soundtrack.

I think we would probably see all the typical doom weaponry (and the SSG because why not), being part of the Union Aerospace Military Division, we could even see the BFG in it's prototype stages. As far as powerups, Berserk could be a super steroid as part of a super soldier program gone bad, since it probably is called "Berserk" for a reason. Soulsphere could be an interesting deus ex machina but I rather the imaginary writers who are tackling my pitch didn't go that route.

It's effectively like this:

Doomguy is the first test subject and the first to sign up for it. It'd pass with flying colours, him bursting into an uncontrollable rage and having to be restrained and sedated. In comes the next test subjects, who all die in horrible ways, like their insides liquifying and vomiting them up. The project is deemed a failiure. but an error in production causes them to just be made anyway.

The doomguy also injects a FULL BOX of them into himself. A single syringe is enough to kill a man.

1 click download and 1 click run? don't be silly.
just get zdl, GZdoom, the doom IWADs and the mods you want (so i guess BDSE, the voxel pack and the DHTP)
you should get all the stuff you need in the pastebins (or at the very worse a minute of googling).
if you want to use ZDL, you can organize your stuff that way:
-doom folder (put zdl here)
--source_ports (put the GZdoom folder here)
--IWADs (put the iwads (basically, the full games) here)
--PWADs (put the pwads (mods) here)
and that's it. just configure ZDL and you'll be able to launch any mod you want in a few clicks.
now, if you really want a one click launch, you can do it with a command line, but that will be a lot less easy to edit than ZDL.
just drop everything in the same folder, and open the notepad and write:
gzdoom.exe -iwad [1] -file [2]
where [1] is the iwad you want to play and [2] the pwads you want to load
just save that little line as a .bat file and there you go

It's pretty simple to get the hang of.
If you wanted to play say, Brutal Doom with a custom level set, say, Hellbound, you can make a shortcut to GZDoom, and add to the commandline of that shortcut the .wad filenames (as long as they're in the same folder)

It'd look a bit like this

oh man

that's topical

>> No.1478021

Okay, allow me to give an example.

Since last July I've been working on a wad based on a dream I once had in 2010. Being a three year old dream, it's terribly hard to remember details or even remotely get myself into the correct mindset of the dream.

Now, if I didn't really give that much of a shit about the authenticity of the recreation, I could simply make it up as I go along, finishing it at the pace of any other wad. But that would defeat the entire purpose of the project in the first place; to recreate an accurate interactive version of a dream.

I do work on it. I do "force" myself to open the wad up in DB2 and go through my brain trying to recall the dream. It's not the motivation I lack, but the ability to stop, sit back, and really think about how I'm gonna do this the right way.

Art is not work.

Quit confusing the two. I hate people that do that.

>> No.1478034

i'm not confusing the two

it takes work to create art

forcing yourself to open up the wad and work on it is work

>> No.1478042

I strongly recommend everyone have an editor installed, even if it's a terrible piece of software, to be used for examining existing maps.

I can't imagine not having Yadex around for this reason, even though it's otherwise a horrible program than only a masochist would use to make maps with.

>> No.1478045

You don't have to force yourself to work on one thing alone.

Mike12 is a shining example of this. He keeps busy and jumps between projects to keep them fresh and to prevent stagnation.

Should there be a limit? Should there be time to rest? Absolutely, but it should not result in twiddling fingers awaiting inspiration.

>> No.1478049

too bad make it png, i dont like fuzzy shit

>> No.1478056

>> No.1478059

My entire life revolves around my projects for the most part, never force yourself to work on one thing if you're just not into it. Your apathy bleeds through and it starts to show. This is why I haven't really dinked with TSP in a bit or whatever else, if I'm not feeling inspired, you guys are most likely going to know just by playing it.

I keep busy by working on several different things at any one time, and sometimes while working on something else I'll find inspiration for a project I set aside for whatever reason. Challenge yourself but never push yourself over the edge for a passion project.

>> No.1478062

When I'm not inspired I either work on doom modding stuff that doesn't require inspiration (bugfixing, converting graphics to texture lumps to save space, adding gldefs or brightmaps, stuff that's tedious and not creative) on mods that serve functionality but aren't creative or artistic or on other stuff that's not doom related.

You seem to have this idea that when I'm not inspired to mod Doom, or do something else creative, I'm sitting around doing nothing in the interim waiting to be inspired.

This isn't the case.

>> No.1478072

You fucking retards.

The original Doomwads image was ALWAYS a JPG.

Also I plan to add DoomRL to it too, I just need to go fiddle with and find other wads too

>> No.1478087

>i'm not confusing the two
>it takes work to create art
>forcing yourself to open up the wad and work on it is work

Not him, but I enjoy modding/mapping when I'm "inspired" to mod/map. There are always things involved in that that aren't creative, and are just work, but a lot of it is creative work. What that anon probably meant is that you're confusing this with a profession or job.

I do this for fun in my spare time, it's a hobby/pastime. I don't see the point of forcing myself to work to push out maps or mods that are sub par just so I can be constantly mapping/modding. If I'm not going to create anything above "acceptable" for others to play, and it will be a grind creating that "acceptable" content, then what's the fucking point?

If anything that makes it less likely for a project to be finished than taking one's time; if you hate it midway through it, it's unlikely that it will ever be finished.

>> No.1478095

The shared complete version was a jpg to save space. It doesn't lose quality when saved and resaved so long as it's not being edited.

While creating it the only thing that makes sense is keeping it a png.

>> No.1478103

the point of constantly working is constantly learning, trying new things, pushing yourself to new boundaries and then destroying them, learning what does and does not work

the point of constantly working is constantly progressing

if you hate it midway, don't finish it, start something else and take note of why you hate it

>> No.1478108

I don't have time to do that with doom mapping/modding though, and if I did that to myself I would probably hate mapping/modding in general.

>> No.1478112

Practice is great, and it is indeed how you get better and more creative. But cutting out the middleman and trying new things within an already established project is a bad idea.

Partially this. I make maps and weapons and crap, but right now Doom is a side hobby while I work on my main shit which is music. I obviously have a mapset in the works, but I'm not going to actively force myself to work on maps if I don't want to work on maps today. Because today I want to work on music. (Also, I've announced deadlines for the music projects, but the doom stuff is just "when it's done.")

That said, there are plenty of times where I sit there and I have to go "I need to start this song today/start this map/start doing this monster." I've found that it's often very easy to get going with a project when you just HAVE SOMETHING STARTED. A blank page (be it paper, a DAW, or a map editor) is THE most daunting fucking thing ever. Once I have a handful of rooms started, or a scratch drum and vocal track and some basslines, then the whole thing will start to come together and Become A Thing.

If you don't feel like mapping, just open up your editor and start making random shapes and rooms. They don't have to STAY there--it's important to know what to cut and what you can fix up later.

Once I made a map that I planned to have a big area with the yellow key in it, but I didn't know what to put there yet. I did know what to put in the area the yellow key would open. So I just made a room and plopped a yellow key in it, and then went and made that thing. Once I had that yellow area established, I knew what I could get away with in the area the key was in. (I put Mancubuses in the other room, so I figured the player should have a rocket launcher, so I put one in that room, etc.)
