Hey /vr/
Should I buy a NES/SNES or FAMICOM/SUPER FAMICOM?
>Famicom vs Entertainment System thread

>> No.1471489

American SNES if you want to play American SNES and super famicom games. Super famicom if you just want to play japanese games, there are adapters for the super famicom but they're somewhat uncommon.

AV famicom > Front loader NES == Top loader NES > Famicom

Famicom is more of a collectors item there's not a whole lot of reason to own one unless you *really* want one.

>> No.1471531

I'm genuinely surprised that this is even a question. It's self-explanatory.

>> No.1471538

It's easy to mod a super nintendo to play super famicom games, so no point in buying a super famicom.

i'd also try and find an nes and just get a famicom adapter for ~25$.

or you could just wait for a system that plays them all (retron5) for sheer convenience

>> No.1471565

It's easier to get an NES to play Famicom games than it is to get a Famicom to play NES games. NES also comes with composite video support, while the Famicom only supports RF.

For SNES just use whatever you can get cheap, then install the appropriate region mod (you'll need it). I personally prefer the looks of the SFC, but an American model will likely be cheaper.

>> No.1471603

>>1471565

thats why you just get an SNES Mini. It doesn't have the shitty look of the original SNES, and it looks pretty nice overall. easy to take apart and clean too.

except adapters are more like $50

>> No.1471702

>>1471615
They're everywhere for under $20.
Is this more fucking Hyperkin shill marketing?

OP, AV Famicoms are the shit. Sharp Titlers are the best though, but ridiculously expensive.

A Super is a Super unless it's PAL so just don't get a PAL one.

>> No.1471721

Well if we're really getting into it, I think you should get a US 1chip SNES because RGB out with no mod required. I think the claim that a mini put out better RGB after modding is a myth.

>> No.1471850

>>1471702

but the super famicom slot will not take the square us games.

its a lot easier to just to get some pliers and cut off the tabs in the SNES.

>>1471615

I just recently bought an early run NES hogans alley that comes with a famicom adapter in it for 17$.

check youtube for a video on how to tell which older games had adapters in them, then hit up a local store if you have one. you'll certainly want to be able to examine the cart in person.

you can also check ebay for games with famicom adapters in them. most of the cheaper ones are buy it now for 25.

>>1471850
Just gut a game genie to use SNES carts on an SFami, if you can get an SFami cheaper anyway. Also, like I said I gotta specifically recommend a 1chip SNES too and I dunno what the RGB situation is on SFamis, but that's just my ignorance. I personally have three 1chips with their tabs pulled and I have zero desire for anything else.

Do you have any idea how many copies of Gyromite exist?

>> No.1472584

>>1472564
It doesn't really matter how many exist in total the only ones that came with the adapter were released very early and they were only around for a few months so there was not a whole lot of them in the first place. Even the early versions weren't 100% adapters the adapter versions were just used to keep up with demand. When you take into account people breaking the cartridge apart for 20 years just for the adapter the they become even scarcer. There's probably quite a few left out there but you're way more likely to find the regular copy than one with an adapter at this point.

This adapter thing is pretty pointless anyway you can just buy this thing and save a game from being ruined >>1472538

Yup, they sell Famicom-to-NES adapters, especially in latinamerica since the 90s, pic related. I have one to play my copy of Battle City on my NES and it works like a charm, and it's from 1992! http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.mx/MLM-441302114-adaptadores-para-juegos-de-family-para-jugar-en-nintendo-nes-_JM

The opposite type of adapter also exists, a 72pin NES to 60pin Famicom. http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.mx/MLM-444244862-adaptador-para-cartuchos-de-nes-para-family-_JM

If you want to use a FDS get a Famicom. If you want the small size get a Famicom. If you just want to play some games and live in bigbox land get a NES. If you want carts the size of a console get an NES.

If you got an NES because you like blocky consoles with sharp edges get a SNES. If not get a SF.

Despite what others have said here either systems can play it's counterparts system with a cheap adapter. I have them all and paid no more than $2 for any one. Unless you're the kinda guy who likes to overpay on ebay playing another systems cart shouldn't be a major factor in the decision.

I think that the hardwired controllers are another issue. If you are prone to breaking controllers or want to use a dogbone, you're probably better off with a NES (or AV Famicom).

Goddamn, I need to get an original Famicom. It is probably one of my favorite looking systems.

Hardwiring then was just a retarded decision. It can be a major issue. Adding a beakaway extension is easy enough though.

some things i didn't see anyone mention here that i feel need to be said about owning a famicom

cons:
>controller cables are very short, if you want to play 2player you will literally both be sitting side by side and more often than not, on the floor.
>controllers are hard wired and cannot be changed (without manually replacing them) unlike the NES, where you can get many different kinds and they're easily replaced
>output cables are also very short, limiting where and how you play games.(I'm almost always sitting on the floor in front of the tv when I use it, simply because it can't reach anywhere else but right at the base of the screen)
>the 'jailbars' that the famicom displays. You could AV mod it and try and clear them up, but personally I just left mine alone as it didn't bother me too much. Some people really dislike them though.

pros:
>looks neat
>has a microphone?

not really any other reasons to own one unless you personally like them. I'm not saying don't buy one, but for playing games it's not the best. If you really want to play famicom games just get a convertor for cheap, buy famicom games on ebay (look for auctions that don't charge for shipping) and there ya go.

Without modding, playing Famicom games on the NES would be more hassle than it's worth, with the key offender being the 10NES and most FC To NES converters using some cheap, often unreliable security bypass. There's also the 5 Famicom games that have expanded audio, which you wouldn't be able to hear even if you mod your NES to play expanded audio; the converter itself needs to be modded in a way that varies from piece to piece.

Regardless, I'll pull a PC Master Race and say "if you can mod it, it is automatically superior". You can mod a top slot on the NES to play Famicom cartridges, as well as other cosmetic mods you could do to it. After a modded NES comes the AV Famicom (due to composite and longer cables), then everything else.

If you want to sit on the floor put your console on the floor. If not don't.

For output cables feel free to use one as long as you want so you can put that console close so you don't need to sit on the floor.
