That book was a disappointment.
It got facts that the game had stated wrong, it didn't follow full continuity, and it was in general oddly written. All three of them are like that.

What I liked best about myst was the minimal storytelling. Which is why the end pissed me off. and then they wrote a book, which doesn't vibe well with 'minimal storytelling'.
