Ask someone who works at a /vr/ gamestore anything.
>that feel when a boxed tg-16 comes in for the first time ever
>that feel when the district manager buy's it before you're even done with the sale
>for only $60
Same guy also brought in a boxed NES, chrono trigger, earthbound, and several rpg's for the ps1+dreamcast.

Yes, cheaper than the us by far. I was actually looking on ebay at some nip pages and shit like ogre battle 64 is only like $5. Granted you need to know at least a little moon to understand anything, but still. As long as you dont care about condition you can get some amazing deals, and by that I mean even a crease on a box flap is enough to knock off like 1/3rd of the price for them.

overall, 20's
we do movies (dvd/blueray) and current gen stuff too, so that has an impact on the demographic quite a bit.
movie buyers are almost always in their 40's.
gamers average out to about 20 I'd say, but generally the older the system the older the player. 360 is kids (under 16), ps3 is college+high school. Retro is college students and up, usually in their late 20's. and xbox/ps2/gamecube is poor people and mexicans regardless of age.
I've seen a few children express interest in the SNES, but that's it as far as anyone under ~25 goes. Teenagers dont give a shit about the /vr/ at all, at least if they do, it's all done with emulators on their phone.

>Do you let people play the games?
kinda, we have some flatscreens set up with a ps3, 360, and a shitty 3-in-1 snes/nes/genesis console. we keep some chairs set up in front of the tv's so people can sit down and play, but most of the time they're in and out in a few minutes, or chatting with us about whatever the fuck they chat with us about.
>Do you over charge?
I'd like to say no, but it really depends. most prices are slightly below ebay, some are slightly above, and a handful are ridiculously under priced. The Earthbound that came in today for example would have sold for $140, though I have a feeling it's going to get passed around by the employee's for a few months until one of us pony's up the dosh for it. My model 2 Sega CD however was $25, and it came all the cables required, including the headphone to rca for a model 1 (though no model one extension piece sadly ;_;). NES and SNES are $45 each (but come with 2 controllers and a zapper). Most of the games are priced generically ($4 NES, $6 SNES, $8 PS1/DC/Sat, etc...) with the exception of rare games or ones in high demand, things like Pokemon, Final Fantasy, and Zelda.
we also do a buy 2 $8 and under get one free.
also we dont charge extra for boxes, but likewise we dont pay extra for boxes when people trade stuff in.

>>1464985
Franchise, though the nearest store is like 2 hours away, and this section of the company is like a little outpost several states away from the HQ.
Dunno about start up costs, but I do know that when a new store opens up, all the existing ones pull at least one duplicate for any game that we have more than 3 copies of, and send it over to them.
Area is an older part of a semi small town (25,000 people I think), not quite a downtown area, but older, if that makes sense. Not a shitty part of town either, though the demographic is overwhelmingly white trash and nigga's, with a handful of autists that come in so often you'd think they live next door.

1.Our stock is almost 100% trade ins
2.We sell dvd's, which we pay $1 in credit or .50 cents in cash for regardless of what it is, and then sell it for either $5, or $7 if it came out within about 8 months or so ago. unless its a box set, then its depends upon what the show/movie is.
3.We jew people worse than gamestop on trade ins if they ask for cash, which surprisingly a lot of them do. if they do in store credit, I think we give them around 1/3rd of what we charge for it.
4.We actually charge $14 for SMB3... when we have it.

We have camera's in the store for hopefully obvious reasons, and also create a profile in our system when people sell something to us or use a credit card. That way we have their ID when shit goes south. Anyways, when we catch someone shoplifting, we take a photo of them from our camera's as they pocket their pilfered goods, include their info if we have it, and also look up their Facebook profile if we know their name. All of this information (Name, birth date, DL number, shoplifting photo, and FB profile image) gets printed onto a single sheet of paper and tossed into a binder.
A binder that I found later that night. A binder that happened to have a sheet of paper with him on it.
Apparently he comes in often enough and accounts for so much of our profits, both in sales and trade in's, that its better to let him steal a few $2 genesis games than take him to the police.
And judging by the number of times I've seen him in the store, I have no doubt that it's true.

We're supposed to send rare or CIB stuff in to corporate to sell on an ebay page that I have yet to see, but that never happens. instead one of the employee's usually ends up buying it off the customer (we step outside and do a private sale) for slightly more than what the store would give, but still vastly cheaper than what the store would charge. That or we put the cart in with everything else, and toss the box in the back, which is given to the customer when they buy the game, or to an employee if they want it. or in some cases we just shrink-wrap the box with the game inside and toss it in a case. Which, like I said earlier, costs the same amount as a loose cart, since we don't price based upon condition.

>> No.1465221

>Do you guys do reservations/prepays?
For customers, we can hold a game until the end of the day, other than that we only do layaways.
Employee's are officially allowed 5 items to be put on hold indefinately, although our manager's rule is that we can never have more stuff on hold then him. which is extremely generous since he's got a pile of at least 15 things at any one time in the back.
None of our stock is new unless one section is woefully empty, so preorders aren't an option. unless someone brings in a system or copy of a game, we don't have it. We haven't had any NES/SNES/N64/Genesis in stock (or at least more than one in stock) for awhile now because of that. And our selection fluctuates in sync with welfare/college disbursement checks as well, which say's quite a lot about our demographic.

>> No.1465243

>>1465210
by "rare", I can also mean "in demand". it only sells for like 1$5-20 I think, and we've got at least 5 copies of it. It's just that none of our other PS1 games go over $12, which is the limit for stuff out on the floor.

Inventory wise, I know we have over 2,000 PS2, and 1,707 Xbox huge disks, because thats what I did today. Most systems are between 500-700 disks/carts, and about half that in individual titles. That's not counting the mountains of duplicates and sports games we have in the back. we have an entire rubbermaid bucket filled with just madden N64 games, and thats not even all of them.
we also have 50 used 360 controllers out front and 3 Rubbermaid totes full of them in the back.
whereas we've got about 10 used dualshock 3's total, with maybe 5 more off-brand used ps3 controllers. thats not counting the new dualshock three's or new off-brand controllers we've got for the system though, which are always kept stocked to a reasonable amount.
That example is an outlier though, as nothing else in the store compares to the excess of 360 controllers and N64/PS2/Xbox sports games we have.

it's got about as much square footage devoted to games as a gamestop does, only difference is that we keep as many copies of games out on the floor as possible, so no side-by-side individual cases like they tend to do.

Not that I know of. Our prices aren't really garage sale low, we're closer to ebay prices or a tad bit lower.

Though I'll be honest, some of my coworkers pick up something from a customer to flip it on ebay. I've done it once myself, though mostly because when we get in wrapped games from customers we're -required- to open it up to check if the disc is there/etc. A lady was trading in Starfox Adventures mint, I told her I'd give her our buy in price + some extra, and threw it on ebay since I figured someone else would want a mint copy of that game.

Yes, unfortunately. We're within walking distance of a goodwill, salvation army, and "resale barn", which means that stuff from there almost always comes straight to us. Which is good since it gives us a nice variety, but it also means no cheap deals. Resellers around here aren't smart enough to realize they'd get more if they sold it themselves though. There's this one lady who goes around to garage sales and buy's up anything video game related and brings it to us, either in exchange for a shit ton of movies, or a very meager profit in cash, assuming it's profitable at all with how we jew people on cash trade ins.

I'm gonna try and see if you work at the nearest retro vidya store to me while keeping it ambiguous. (Sorry if this comes off as creepy/weird)

Does the chain/brand name of where you work start with a V?
Is your store next to a burrito restaurant?
Do you also sell things such as comics, music CDs, and action figures?
When you walk in the front door, are the games to the right?
Do you have (or recently sold, I haven't been there very recently) a Sega Genesis system that hasn't been sold for a very long time?
Do you have a few TVs hanging from the ceiling playing movie trailers?

Like I said, sorry if this is freaky, I'm just having a "small world" type feeling right now. Of course, feel free to ignore/refuse to answer this.

sounds like a kinda cool place.

I remember about 6 or 7 years ago there was a place called gamerxone near me that was in, I guess technically a basement, of an old building downtown. the walls had wood paneling and it was extremely cramped in there. the shelves were set up in a maze as well, like they almost spiraled towards the center of the room and then reached a dead-end. there was also "room" on the back sides of the shelves where they had a card table set up to play /tg/ stuff. They sold comics and tabletop rpg's too, but idk how anyone read them since it was so dark in there. There were no windows and the only light source came from these tiny ass tv's hanging from the ceiling, really dim tube lights like the ones businesses use, that were placed at the top of each shelf, and a lamp hanging above the card table. A literal lamp like you would set on a table, that they hung from the ceiling with a piece of rope.

The store I go to used to have a few, but then some asshole came in and bought out ALL of their Sega and Atari 2600 games, except for a copy of Lunar that was in a display case. Now all their Sega stuff consists of a bunch of loose Genesis games (that they probably got a lot off of ebay just to have some), a few undesirable DC games, a single Master System game, and Lunar. Good thing I had gotten all the good shit on previous visits.

Jesus, this threads still up.
Well you guy's are in luck. Here's something that happened today. btw, my manager said that this is the craziest thing he's ever seen happen in the 8 years he's worked here, and it was during my shift.
>black chick walks in (early 20's I'd guess, maybe younger)
>snooty as all hell
>has a big ass purse thing over her shoulder that she keeps bumping into the [glass] counter
>texting on her phone as she walks
>bumping into people too, not giving a shit about them though
>she pulls out a ps3 a, ps2 controller, and a copy of GTA5
>literally drops them on the counter
>says she want's to sell them
>no power or video cables
>I ask if she has them
>"a what now"
>"do you have the cables to hook this up with ma'am? A plug for the wall and an HDMI cable?"
>"Oh, naw I ain't got no pluuug, what the fuck is an eich-dee-em-eye, I ain't never heard of that shit."
>show her one
>"never seen one dem befow"
>"ok them ma'am, do you have one of these?"
>show her a standard R/W/Y multi-out
>she's still texting
>"naw"
>grab some from behind to counter to test the system
>works fine with HDMI, use a copy of angry birds to test if disks work, and they do.
>controller connects just fine
>try using the multi-out
>nothing
>reset the consoles video settings
>still nothing
>multi-out port doesn't work, pins are visibly damaged
>probably yanked the cable out when she unplugged it to bring it in
>"I'm sorry ma'am but we cant take this as the system only works with HDMI, however we can take this game in if you'd still like to sell it"
>"well thats k cuz I dont got one dose"
>still texting, barely paying attention to me
>restate last sentence
>she finally realizes what I said
>"well what da fug, I taught yew sold games here niggah, done chu buy sheet too?"
>at this point I just want her gone
>ask her to please tone down her language while she's in the store

But there was a little kid who kept going on about megaman though, wanted to know if we had MM7 (we dont) since he'd already beaten the others.

Well sorry to burst your bubble but Akihabara is full of overpriced shit meant to take advantage of tourists, mainly obnoxious French ones. The clerks at Super Potato are usually apathetic and disgruntled and spend most of their time making fun of foreigners to their faces. I'm fairly certain you're not just going to waltz into a job teaching English in Japan without also knowing a significant amount of Japanese. You would need to also factor in all kinds of cost of living, and that isn't cheap at all. I don't know what they pay teachers in Japan, but if it's anything like America it isn't a lot. I'm not saying you couldn't do this, but it's nowhere near as easy as you make it out to be, else we would see a huge amount of weeaboos moving to Japan, and I've not heard of such an exodus.

Actually there are a large number of companies who prefer that you dont know japanese. ALT (assistant language teacher) jobs are the #1 thing foreigners are hired for outside of the US military.
and you would be correct that they don't get paid a lot, on average its $30,000 a year. However 99% of these jobs are for little towns out in the ass end of nowhere, so the cost of living is about the same as the US, assuming you change your lifestyle to match that of the rest of the country (public transport only, japanese food diet, no fresh fruit, etc...)
>I've not heard of such an exodus.
thats because you don't know where to look.
The only requirement for most jobs is that you have a bachelors degree, and thats not actually a job requirement, but a visa requirement. Doesn't matter what it's in either.
As for weaboo's, they tend to get weeded out in the interview process, though some still slip through.

Well if it makes you feel any better a concrete example would be the Japanese version of Turtles in Time (cart only!) for Super Famicom, which sells for about $40 in Akihabara. Same as eBaying a US copy.

I got lucky and found stuff like a nice condition SFC copy of Castlevania at Book Off in Shibuya for like $8, but that was a fluke. These myths of stores filled with brand new and CIB SFC games are just that, myths. Super Potato and Mandarake charge out the ass for anything someone would actually want.

hey, you're scaring him.

Its not completely a myth, but it's definitely not as easy as people on /vr/ say.
It's just that the games that go for huge amounts here unusually go for about 1/2 that in japan. RPG's for example are printed in insane amounts over there because they know people will play them, therefore they're still cheap. You're not going to find 100% CIB games all the time, loose carts are still the main way you'll find them. Often with little Watanabe's name scribbled on the back with a marker.
Just like here, if you want good deals you'll have to hunt for them, and that means poking around thrift shops (hard-offs usually).
So yeah, the stuff you're interested in will most likely be cheaper, but japan has its earthbounds too.

By "myth" I was thinking mainly of all the times GCCX goes to game shops and people react like, "wow! you can just walk into a store and buy brand new SFC games!" Which is true if you're looking to buy a copy of Tecmo Bowl or something. It's hilarious walking into a used book store and finding CIB copies of Chrono Trigger for 120 yen and thinking to yourself "if this was in English I'd be rich." Personally I'm into weird and less popular stuff that tends to have kids' names scribbled on it so my shopping trips are pretty cheap.

>> No.1471858

>>1471848
Oh, yeah GCCX is pretty misleading that way.
And I agree with having names written on carts,as long as its not on the label.
If it comes between a scribbled on cart and just a plane cart, I'll go with the scribbled on one.
But if its not too much more I'd go for the CIB one instead.

>tfw our /vr/ chain closed down

It was a regional or national chain with a few stores here. Play and Trade I think it was called, had lots of /vr/ stuff. Bought an SNES four score there and tons of stuff. Then it was robbed overnight one holiday season, cleaned out of pretty much all of it's stock. They cashed in the insurance and closed the place down shortly afterwards. Fucking terrible.

My second option still stands as a better one.
A few weeks, maybe a month vs a whole year.
You can even stay several years if you wanted, Jet, which is the #1 company for this, has a 5 year limit. But by that time you could probably find a permanent job with the school system there, instead of having to go through a contractor company.
Plus you might even meet a slanty eye'd waifu who's willing to give you a marriage visa, which means you can spend however long you want there and retain your US citizenship.
Think about it, you get cheap games, AND freedoms.
