Never played a Castlevania game before in my life, I know they are popular. Atm going through SotN, I have only a cloth tunic, a short sword, leather shield, and knives...and there's this guy who swings a black jack around, and I kill him, keep walking forward a bit and now there's a gaibon who jumps up and down and rapes my shit with fire breath. This time I tried backtracking to maybe spam knives at him and he throws a hadoken at me that kills me instantly.

I'm starting to find it kind of annoying that I have to go ALL the way back with almost no health to fight this bastard. Is this supposed to be the fun part? Figured I'd ask retro in case I'm missing the point entirely.

git gud

no seriously. git gud. occasionally you might want to look up a walkthrough or a strategic guide because SotN is actually one of the easiest CV games out there.

oh wait, I am mistaken. It is a cthulu, not gaibon.

>> No.1463605

You definitely should not be getting one shotted in SotN

>> No.1463613

speaking of SotN. what the hell were they thinking when they implemented the wolf form? it's completely useless. mist and bat is something you will need but not this shit.

>> No.1463636

OP here, I tried it again and used my daggers on him. He was taking 12 damage. Before, the Plate Lord, he only took 1 from the daggers. Am I to believe then that the Cthulu had lower armor than the Plate Lord? Okay, that's doable then.

oh so he's weak against holy items

and the daggers are holy because they are silver. that makes sense.

question: is it stupid to farm in this game?

>>1463636
you know you can look up enemy stats right?
SotN is much more of an action RPG anyway than older titles. they have scale enemies and yes, some plate lords are significantly harder and might take a while.

in-game?

because if not I don't remember the internet being a thing people could easily use to look up enemy stats back in '97

You can keep Alucard's starting equipment if you do the Warg glitch...but I guess it's too late for that, now.

>> No.1463659

>>1463638
You don't need to farm or grind. The difficulty in the game actually drops very hard the further you get. In fact, if you take the time to get some rare random drops later, it becomes almost impossible to die in combat.

>> No.1463662

Why don't you try the first one, it's great.

Once you get halfway decent at 1 you can beat any of them.

>> No.1463670

in-game? no I think the enemy list and the library dude is just for enemy descriptions but not stats. what you did above was fine.

>I don't remember the internet being a thing people could easily use to look up enemy stats back in '97.

it's 2014. what are you talking about? I don't know exactly about that but maybe someone would have written an early guide even back then.

The Cthulu is a mid-level monster in a low-level area. Later on in the game you'll be walking through them like nothing. Holy water works best to kill it when it's on the ground, but it does too much damage for your level and armor at this point in the game.

Also, learn some magic. They're done with fighting game style direction inputs. Try these ones:
Hellfire: press up, then do a hadoken, then hit either attack or shield. You'll teleport, then shoot three fireballs. If you hold up during the teleport, you'll shoot two magma balls. If you hold down, you won't shoot anything.

Dark Metamorphosis: Do a half-circle from one side, to up, to the other side, and press attack or shield. This lets you gain HP from the blood enemies spatter when you hit them with a slashing weapon. Alucard gains a red outline while it's active.

You can use either square or X to cast spells, but I prefer pressing whatever button my shield is equipped to because it has a faster recovery time in case I fuck it up.

>>1463727

wait I can do spells now? Don't I have to learn them first or something?

I don't think it is a bad entry point to the series. The game is pretty and enjoyable to play enough so that you'll try the other Castlevania titles.

You only need to farm if you want some of the items that are so good that they're game breaking. I wouldn't recommend it because they remove all challenge from the game.

Question about SOTN : Is there much text in the game? Would I be able to play the jap version with just basic knowledge of katakana?

asking b/c I would like to try the saturn version, where it was only released in jap

>a bad representation of what Castlevania is really all about.

no. I think that one shouldn't be only exposed to the Belmont-only castlevania games anyway. And thank fuck they introduced some interesting characters even if technically they are all grey haired bishonen characters but their game mechanics are interesting and shit all over your belmont whip fighter.

Still the regular vampire hunters are maybe more challenging to play as. CV might have started out like that but I think that even a "spin off" is a totally fine point to start with any series to play.

>> No.1464131

totally, the dialogue is used sparingly anyway.
Alucard doesn't even talk much either.

I guess that's because he's so old that he doesn't give a shit anymore.

Been playing the SotN unlockable on the PSP Dracula X Chronicles. Idk if the menu has the same interface, but in the PSP-unlockable version, once you perform the spells once, you can look them up again from the Spells submenu. They list them like you'd expect to see the moves for Street Fighter or MK listed.

On a side note, has anyone else had an issue using Mist Form in the PSP-unlockable version? I know you have to use L + R to transform into Mist, but everytime I do it, it turns me into Wolf...and if I turn Wolf off in the Relics menu, it doesn;t do anything. I think I've reached a dead-end if I can't Mist, too, since any unexplored areas are now either unreachable by normal means or have Mist Bars in the path.
