HOW, WHY and IS SUCH A THING EVEN POSSIBLE?

I'm think I'm hearing the ghost of some mad Japanese programmer cackling madly as he put this thing in. Especially since you KNOW the final missile upgrade is just beyond. And I thought the trapdoor before the energy tank was bad...

And the worst part is that you can see the damned thing on your way up again. Sitting there. Just out of reach. I don't think a single other item in the game is teased like this for you.

I sort of figured this. One false move though and you're dunked straight down again and have to climb back up and make that weird bomb jump from a perfectly frozen hopper to get over the pillar.

There are 2 extra-tanks in the game, and serve as mostly energy refills once you have the maximum tanks you can carry.

I never know how to map the vertical shafts. How do you really know when you've gone up one full screen, so it corresponds to one box on the paper?

Focus your vision on an arbitrary tile at the top of the screen, then when that tile is offscreen you'll have traveled the length of the screen.

I'm not really a hardcore gamer. I've (re-)played and loved some essentials such as Alttp, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, OoT and some other of the most famous games in those series (recent ones included).

My question is this: Will I be able to enjoy Metroid if it's my first NES game ever?

The lack of a map, limited shooting directions and starting off with 30 HP seems like a turn off for me. I've heard some criticism that the controls are stiff too.

On the other hand, the soundtrack is great, I love the NES graphics, drawing my own map sounds like fun, and I'm betting it'll feel really good when I finally finish the game.

I.. I dunno /vr/

;_;

>The lack of a map,
You can use the one from the manual to get a basic idea of how the first zones are built

>limited shooting directions
This isn't a big deal. At all.

>and starting off with 30 HP
Only really a problem in Ridley's Lair or if you die against Kraid.

>I've heard some criticism that the controls are stiff too.
Whoever says that has no idea what the word "stiff" means.
Castlevania 1-3 have stiff controls.
Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES) has stiff controls.
Metroid does not.

If you're emulating play the FDS version. You can frameskip past the loading screens so that's a non-issue.

The nicer sound effects and music make it totally worth it. Also give the enemies slightly more unpredictable patterns.

IIRC, there are more energy tanks than you can actually carry. If you pick up one when you're already at max capacity, you get full health.
