Why be surrounded by games that make you feel bad? Sell all of the games you're unlikely to play and keep your favourites and a small amount you might wanna play soon. If you try one of them and you're not in to it, sell it on. This way you end up with an 'only the best' collection of your own choices and you're not just accumulating a meaningless list of games you don't want to play

Nah, that's BS if you ask me. There are plenty of games that are considered by many to be all-time greats that I've never played. There are no 'essential' games and just because many people enjoyed one game doesn't mean you have to play it. Of course if you suddenly feel like trying one then go for it, but don't just hoard popular games you clearly have no interest in playing right now

I've never really thought of my unplayed games as a "backlog". It'd feel wrong to force myself to play something just for the sake of playing, especially since i'll get the motivation to do so sooner or later anyway.

Just play what you feel like, having fun is the important part.

Alltp is a game that's eay to get into, pick up and play even with longer breaks, "just fun", no major roadblocks in difficulty or puzzles, ...
If he can't finish a game like that though he wants to, there's probably no game he would be able to finish and enjoy. Sounds like severe depression or some other problem with him outside of video games.
