I started the game again a few months back and lost interest. It's good on music, characters, and story, but it's SO slow. I love it to death but it could really benefit from faster battles.

Has anyone played the Japanese version? Another complaint is the dialog seems very dry, and I feel like maybe the japanese translation is more interesting. II is famous for it's horrible translation and IV was censored so I really do wonder.

The dragon genes give this game some serious depth. Also, the various masters you can assign to each character to alter their stats makes leveling each character fun.

It's colorful, has a great soundtrack, a killer story, and the gameplay is ultra tight. I've played tons of RPGs and I recommend this one hardcore—perhaps the most underrated RPG ever!

Someone who hasn't played this masterpiece should try it for the first time and document their experience for us.

While playing Breath of Fire three and four, I never had this problem of battles interrupting the adventure every five steps that you mentioned. Of course, I imagine the "every five steps" was an exaggeration to stress your point?

Anyways, I rather liked the battles in Breath of Fire 3. I thought they were nicely animated and sounded great. Battles in BoF3 had plenty of depth to them, because of the various skills you could learn, and ways you could build each character. In fact, the battles of BoF3 were probably the biggest drawing point for me!

Unrelated to your statements, I never liked RPGs were I felt I was "rushing through" the battles so I could "get back" to the game. For me, battles were always such a big part of the RPG experience. And Breath of Fire 3 does them so well.
