Even if that was the case, there'd be no way to support it. There is no plug on the SMS, and it'd be too costly and risky creating a new model with either a port for the FM, or the FM built right in like later revisions of the SMS.

It'd be more realistic for the NES to have gotten a chip you could stick in that unused expansion port for games with expanded audio. Why Nintendo left those pins unconnected, only god knows.

Oh, I dunno about Japanese models, but I'm positive US launch models use a standard power cord. I'm fairly certain Japanese launch units look no different than their US and European counterpart, but I don't own one to be sure.

Not to say the PS2 is perfect, either. I can't stand the lack of a reset button on that, either. Granted, practically every game on PS2 has a soft reset of some kind, whether it be in the menu or Start+Select+L1+R1, but in some games like Xenogears which has no soft reset or "Load" option, it annoys the hell out of me when I want to load a file while I'm playing and what should be a five second process turns into a full minute of booting the system back up, watching the BIOS screens, company logos, etc.

I know. I'm saying the "reset" button literally just powers on and off the system and does a full reboot as opposed to just resetting the system.

Although upon hooking up my original PlayStation for the first time in probably a decade or so, apparently the reset button on the PSX served the same function it did on PS2, BIOS screens and all, so my point is pretty much moot.
