Imho (not that guy) it's heavily dependant on genre.

Pinball, arcade shmups, fighters and such need good framerate.

Strategy and RPG, maybe not so much.

Dune 2 compared to something like DDP for instance, one would be playable with 5fps while the other... well, I never played DDP, but I've seen videos of it and it seems to require very fluid control/feedback to be even remotely doable.

Still, I find Star Fox easy/playable enough without a high framerate. Maybe a romhack of it would be heavier on the fps demand front.

Star Fox had a shitty fps, but that wasn't in the way for people who wanted to beat it.

It had some faults (Titania, white areas on white background for the first half wtf?) but it was perfectly playable.

If you have complaints other than "shit fps" or praise other than "did you even play it", then please bring it up. Because "Star Fox was great" and "Star Fox had terrible fps" are both well-known factors that everyone worth his/her salt here already knows (or should know, go play it if you haven't).

the thing is, on paper it has low framerate, yeah, but when you actually play it the framerate doesn't really matter because the game is still playable and fun. that's why i ask people if they actually play it. there's too many people here and on other boards who just parrot shit they heard from others rather than actually try the games for themselves

I understand exactly what you mean, but again (and again, not hating on Star Fox, I love it) I'm just trying to be the middle man here. For people who are accustomed to arcade shmups it has horrible framerate, while at the same time being pretty much the best home console 3D space shooter at the time.

I guess it's a hard case to talk about, arcade players will consider it shit due to the framerate while home console players will consider it a great achievement in home console technology.

Also, I'm:

Just pointing it out to avoid confusion.

>>1435576
Dune 2 was the example I used because it most certainly does NOT need a good frame rate. Later games sure, but not Dune 2. If you want a more fitting example, then maybe turn-based strategy games. I guess I was wrong choosing an RTS as example, since Dune 2 is one of very few RTS's that aren't dependant on microing (compared to RA or Total Anni which need a lot more microing).

It's not the framerate that bothers me, it's more draw distance and overall clunkiness. Low framerates aren't that big a deal; tons of games back then had them. I'm pretty sure Road Rash runs at a lower framerate than Starfox and still plays better

Starfox is a fun game despite its shortcomings, but it has way more issues than other games from that time. F-Zero plays like a dream for example.

Hard Drivin and a number of flight sims are polygon games on the Genesis that use no addon chips. They are sluggish as hell and aren't very much fun, but that isn't the argument.

Also, Star Fox plays substantially slower on real hardware than on an emulator. Its "playable", and the music is really good, but I could do without it and found it aggravating even in the 90s.

Personally, I could do without ALL these 16bit 3d games. They are all sluggish and ugly as sin.
