bump, this thread is interesting.
I actually find the progression of the outfits final fantasy characters have pretty interesting. eg. Firion only got a revamp with the PSP FF2 game. First his armor was red I think, similar to the FF1 Warrior class character model.

Same with castlevania. Castlevania Chronicles didn't bother me in the slightest because they just made convenient follow-up of the old Belmont design and still kept the shorts.

none is particularly bad and I guess it was time for a revamp and modernization of this character. the leather jacket strikes me as something terribly off though. Does anybody else think that way? The lower half of this character seems completely fine on the other hand and in league with what you'd except characters to wear in a game with a fantasy setting. the left one certainly worked for Lufia games back in the day. They put him on every cover.

I always liked Squall's outfit. Not exactly something you'd wear out in public, but it's stylish and attention getting.

Also, the more "de-Amano-ized" depictions of Locke I thought were pretty cool. Not a dark and shadowy thief getup like you'd think, but something low-key yet indicative of who he is.

I always kinda liked how some of the outfits in FF7/8 is so normal. I guess Raine from FF8 is the best example. But none of them are too crazy and unpractical and weird like the outfits in the newer FFs seems to be.

Gabriel Knight. Even the game realised how impractical a heavy leather trench is in New Orleans in summer but it worked well for the character.

Also, every suit Manny wore in Grim Fandango. You rarely see suits in any game.

The left one definitely looks like it belongs in a fantasy setting. the right is a lot more modernized and while it's not terrible, it's just not my cup of tea. Capes are fucking cool anyway.

So yeah, I prefer the left.

That being said, there's nothing "gay" about the right one, if anything the left one's more gay-- it's colorful and skintight. The new design is geared more towards teenagers.
