Sup, /vr/, I have a question for you guys... A friend of mine is working on a project related to storytelling in video games, and they want to know about what the earliest possible plot twist in games was. I wouldn't really know where to begin to look, but I figured you guys might know.

Is there maybe some kind of obscure text adventure that had a plot twist? Maybe something more recent than text adventure? Any help would be cool.

Pic unrelated, couldn't find an appropriate picture for my oddly specific question.

Probably a 70s mainframe text adventure.

Planetfall (1983) had something resembling a plot twist.

Something resembling a plot twist? Can you elaborate a bit?

I know right.

Chances are it's going to end up being The Colossal Cave ("Adventure") since it was the first game with a real plot

tl;dr: The comic-relief NPC is unexpectedly killed halfway through the game.

Most early text adventures have absent or extremely straightforward plots.

This is not the earliest plot twist, but I think it's a cool one from the arcade game Cyber Lip.

Cyber Lip was supposed to be the thing protecting the Earth, then it goes mad and soldiers are sent in to destroy it. Upon destroying it, you get a message from the president who reveals he is under control of the aliens. So basically, the aliens released a virus that made cyber lip go crazy, then Earth soldiers destroyed Cyber Lip, and now aliens can invade Earth because you took out the defenses.

It's also hilarious because it's as badly translated as you expect a Neo Geo game to be.

Hmm, not sure if I'd consider that much of a plot twist, I'll mention it to my friend though.

First WIDESPREAD and MAINSTREAM plot twist (since that is all those kinds of people are interested in) would probably be "What if Samus was a grill?"

I don't think that counts. What little there is of Metroid's story doesn't hinge on Samus' gender. You could have swapped Samus for a dude and the plot would have remained the same.

Yeah what I'm looking for is the earliest example of a plot twist in a game, not the first mainstream example

first one on nintendo might be samus is a girl?

Treasure of Uşas on the MSX did something like that. The treasure was an ancient bomb.

Big Boss was the Outer Heaven leader all along.

Also, someone tried to do this one time; they'd try and wittle down where the first instance of major game mechanics like health bars or jumping or stealth came from. The problem was, it always ended up being some shitty obscure thing no one ever played; the ideas just came independently of other devs.
