I don't think you're casual if you find it tough. Many of the levels require near-perfect timing and precision. It's certainly not easy, and many of the levels take several tries. Definitely harder than Mario, in my opinion.

If it's Stop & Go Station in particular that you're stuck with, you can skip most of the level by going left from the starting position.

And yes, the game can be very tricky at times.

If you are asking if you should be dying a lot, the answer is yes, that's pretty normal. Especially if you don't know what's coming because you've never played before.

If you can't actually beat the game though, then yeah, you're super casual. I beat it when I was a kid and I'm not even good at video games. What with all the save points and extra lives and whatnot.

Yes, that's right. Most speedruns and TASes will exclusively use Diddy for that reason. DK is quite clunky in comparison.

There are a few tricks to move even faster such as roll jumping, but you have to be rather good at the game to use it effectively.

I wouldn't really compare the sort of "dying because DKC has a weird momentum that takes a few minutes to adjust to" to "dying over and over and over and over again in the same place" difficulty like in actually hard platformers. DKC just doesn't have those sorts of checks to see if you've mastered the controls and enemy placement. The only part that tests your reflexes and timing is the barrel gauntlet in the ice world.

I think some of the harder levels are the minecart ones, especially the haunted house ones in DKC2. They require very precise jumps especially over the bees.

The level at the end of DKC where you had to collect fuel was also a bitch. Would you consider these hard?

Well, every level of DKC pretty much introduces a gimmick so it takes some time to adjust to it.

What I found really hard was the ghost bird boss in DKC2. Avoiding those eggs was climbing up the ropes was difficult.

I always thought DKC was pretty entry-level platformer. The only part I remember having a problem with was the snow level where flakes are obscuring the screen and there's a chain of like 15 barrels to rocket through. It's not even hard, but if you want to do it super fast and flawless like in the video tape Nintendo Power sent out it'll take you some practice. Otherwise just do it slowly one barrel at a time, there's no time limit so no need to rush.

The only part of the game that ever made me frustrated was the barrel gauntlet. I don't really see how DKC could be much easier, honestly, other than just making it so you can't lose. DKC is pretty easy in my opinion. Granted, I have played it a fair amount over the years so it is hard for me to remember playing it as an elementary schoolkid for the first time, but I do seem to have a hazy recollection of maybe being disappointed with how easy K. Rool was. I do think though that some of the barrel blast segments are tough, as are a few levels in the ice cap area.

I do think 2 is harder, though.

Most areas are like that. If you complete a bunch of levels and game over before the save point then you have to replay them all.

DKC2 has the save points much earlier in each area, while DKC3 doesn't prevent you from backtracking to a previous save point.

I found that, in the platform levels, Diddy (or who ever you Weren't playing as. Which for me was usually Diddy) would float above the platform when it lowered, and go below it when the platform rose. There was one point where I'd get hit, and then instead of getting my second chance, the other character would just fall through the platform.
There were some other annoying bugs on those levels, too.

The game was amazing, but those two levels were just terrible. Nonetheless, no level pissed me off more than the Minecart level.

For me it's Ninja Gaiden level but longer and there're far more gimmicks you need to adjust to. Granted, Ninja Gaiden is pretty easy except for the last act but I still think DKC is a hard game.

How about Super Ghouls and Ghosts, and, if you wanted a less obvious selection, The Jungle Book? I could never even beat the snake boss. He takes a trillion hits and shoots homing missiles constantly. All the bosses in DKC take like 3 hits and attack rarely. The Empire Strikes back is like that, too, with bosses with a trillion health. I'm just going on games I actually own, too.

Snow Barrel Blast is by far the toughest part of the game.

DKC2 is tougher overall, but with factors like Dixie's hovering and Diddy's air cartwheeling, the regular stages are no problem. The gimmicky ones kind of suck though.
