I remember Killer Instinct as a very strong AI learning each match your move.
If you keep playing the same way till the end it will be a hell to finish the game with the same character to the begining till the end

I remember once my cousin tried beating the end guy, like, two dozen times. She gave up and went to the toilet. I picked it up, mashed some buttons, beat him.
I'm shit at those games too. I never played them much.

Half-Life. Fighting the marines especially. The first time one of them threw a grenade at me then ran for cover was a shitty pants moment.

>> No.1407869

I thought that the Dungeon Keeper games had some good pathing. For example when a creature couldn't find a way to a specific room for a specific need, they would go do something else instead of staring at the closed door

Then again, imps were charging like lemmings into traps in plain sight...

fighting a red demon in Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts without the crossbow or gold armor is pretty impressive, he just dodges and dodges and then swoops on you suddenly and steals your armor, then he'll duck into the floor and do a little jig to make fun of you, and as you flee he'll just follow you through the rest of the stage until you have to stop and then he'll finish you

>> No.1408554

Mr Gimmick for the NES has pretty sweet A.I. check it out

>> No.1408592

Doom.

I just learned recently the A.I. even has a retreat mechanic, i mean what the fuck. Also the hate mechanic where enemies pursue their target regardless of other damage, but i knew that one already.

>> No.1408679

>>1408592
Eh, it's ok for its time. The retreating thing is only there for when the monster can't reach you by walking in your general direction. Also they don't patrol or do anything when idle, unlike Wolfenstein 3D.

Aside from a few loopholes (such as back attacks having really high priority), Final Fantasy Tactics has really solid AI. Even Calculators using the AI will completely wreck shit no problem.

I thought Actraiser had pretty good AI for such an early SNES game.

Mortal Kombat's AI isn't good. Making an AI that mirrors or instantly reacts to your inputs isn't hard to do. In fact, it's actually the easiest (laziest) way to make formidable opponents.

You could program pong so that the AI paddle's Y coordinate is always the same as the ball's Y coordinate. You would have an unbeatable opponent (well, aside from glitches) without requiring much effort in scripting the AI.

HL didn't actually have good AI, just piss design.

You could shoot marines and they wouldn't flinch or anything. They'd just stand there and take your bullets while shooting at you, maybe running away later randomly. It wasn't smart, it was just stupid. HL 'AI' has always been overrated.

AI can be vicious sometimes, even without modifiers. And you can throw in a 50% AI profit modifier on top of that.

>> No.1411580

>>1411015
>it's not actually good because they did something I didn't like
That's not how criticism works, friend. HL1 AI is a milestone due to the techniques it used, it's a simple historical fact.

He's serious, though. Everybody knows this. Go play the arcade version of UMKIII and tell me the game isn't unenjoyably difficult if you try to do anything but spam jump kick. Oh, with some occasional uppercutting against Motaro's jumps. Then get to Shao Kahn and spam run + uppercut. Freeze + run + uppercut is even easier if you're Sub-Zero. Anything else is just handicapping yourself.

>> No.1412410

>>1412405
>implying Motaro and Shao Khan are the only enemies in the game
You need to use jump kick against Motaro sure but you can't spam jump kick the whole game, no fucking way.

>> No.1412413

>>1411580
It really wasn't. They just ate your bullets and ran around randomly, sometimes shooting at you, sometimes throwing a grenade. That doesn't equate to 'omg amazing AI'. It was more advanced in the sense that they didn't just walk towards you are shoot or whatever, but it really isn't something I'd consider 'impressive' by any means either.

>> No.1412417

>>1408930
Lode Runner's AI is pretty reactionary. You can heavily manipulate them a lot of the time, pressing down to make them jump from ropes into holes and making them reverse their course by climbing a ladder or standing in certain places.

I guess it's still better than just trying to run straight towards you or wait around or something. Or actually being smart. Lode Runner would be a lot harder if you couldn't get them to easily stand where you need them. Their heads make good platforms; if they knew that, they'd never let you win.

>> No.1412424

>>1412410
You CAN spam jump kick the whole game. Aside from the bosses, it is probably the EASIEST way to get through the game. And you can jump kick the bosses, too. It's just a little easier if you throw in another attack or two.

What you you do, smart guy? Spam sweep?

>> No.1412441

>>1412424
Okay anon. You have all of youtube at your disposal. Show me a playthrough where somebody spams jump kick and wins the entire game. If you can't find that, go ahead and record your own playthrough with FFSplit and upload it. Good luck faggot.

Fuck UMK3s AI. I had to cheese the fuck out of it but found the best way to fuck the AI was with Smoke. If you jumped backward and did a kick in mid air, the AI would 99% of the time shoot a projectile at you. Then you could use Smokes teleport uppercut to hit them and do some other crazy shit. Haven't played in forever.

>> No.1412634

Fighting game AI doesn't fucking count unless it actively attempts 'mind games' or tries to simulate actual human reactions in some way.

You are not a genius if you can make a computer react faster than a player when confronted with one situation at a time that has absolutely correct answers each time.

>> No.1412676

Perfect Dark has a good variety of AI opponents, some with preset tics like the FistSim or TurtleSim.

It can be pretty odd at times though, like when you see an enemy roll to the side in plain view, only making your job that much easier.
