It's a Terebikko, a video game system from Bandai that used video tapes featuring many popular characters. The characters would call you on the phone and you had to answer and press the right button to continue on the tape. If you got it wrong, the receiver would deliver a powerful electric shock right to your head I guess. I dunno.

ITT: Post crazy video game stuff most people have never even heard of and would be surprised to find out ever existed.

If you didn't already know, the Japanese are really into efficiency. There's a whole genre of games over there that goes wayyyy back about transportation management. Trains are really big too so naturally there are train simulation games. They get pretty realistic to the point of having specialized controllers.

I know at least one guy on here has one of these because he asked me of a PlayStation to USB adapter would let him use it on his emulators.

I wouldn't mind having one myself

This controller gets posted a lot as a joke in controller threads, but it's for pachinko simulators. You probably can't have gone your whole life without seeing The Price is Right or playing Shenmue 2 but believe me when I tell you the Japanese REALLY love pachinko. There are entire anime series about it.

I discovered the awe inspiring world of pachinko through emulating an arcade game called Pachinko Sexy Reaction and enjoyed it so much I have my own pachinko machine. You control how hard the balls shoot out with this knob but I can't imagine how it would have worked on a Famicom with no analog control... Maybe it used the microphone somehow?

Anyway I have to assume that people thought they could hone their pachinko machine skills at home with games like this. I even have one for Super Fami.

In Brazil, I guess you get robbed blind in taxes for trying to import a video game console so they produce their own. You're probably familiar with their company TecToy's shitty Firecore Genesis clones and this is probably just another FireCore clone but damn is it ever bitchin sweet looking.

The Casio Loopy was a console marketed exclusively for girls. Its claim to fame was that it could print stickers because girls love stickers!

It was even possible for it to capture video and make stickers from the images. It was discontinued after about a dozen games were released for it, but Casio had some even bigger fail consoles.

It might be that the system plays more interactive games than OP describes, though. While we are used to vhs tapes only having video on them and audio cassettes only having audio on them, the magnetic tape inside these things can theoretically contain any information needed, gaming applications included, hence why there were computers that had cassette drives back in the 80's.

When I was like 10, for Christmas I got a Captain Power ship like this one. My dad was so proud of me for wanting the villain. I was under the impression that the cartoon would continue to be on Saturday mornings and my friends would also get them for Christmas and we could play together and fight each other.

Neither of those things ended up happening. Turned out the first couple videos had been shown Saturday mornings as like infomercials to get kids to want the toy and we didn't have a VCR. Also I guess my friends were too mature to play with stuff like that. My dad was pissed and returned it to Woolworth. I don't remember what I got to replace it, but I got an NES not long after that so whatever.
