Obtaining an emulator and getting it to run can be tricky and some specific games can be hard to obtain but I expect they'll only cover mainstream stuff except for the Xbox.

This: if you think the average computer user will find the process of downloading & unzipping an emulator (average computer user: "okay, you just lost me at unzip"), finding & downloading games, then playing said games on said emulator, to be straightforward, then you don't get out much. Not everyone has been playing ZSNES for over 10 years. Seems like a great idea, actually, and $5 seems reasonable for meeting up with some schmo and getting them set-up on their journey to becoming a retrofag.

You won't be able to get the licenses to legally sell the games, certainly not for $1 per game.
You may be able to use a cartridge copying device to copy a rom to a computer.

I heard from a friend that there are people trying to hustle and actually *sell* DOSBOX as retail software.

>> No.1405596

>>1404314
The listing was probably made by the authorities to lure in people who want to pirate the software, but obviously too dumb to know how. At the end of the day it's still one less pirate on the streets.

It's true, the average computer user would have no idea what's going on, but you have to remember that people here are in the significantly more computer literate portion of all computer users. What's simple to us will not be simple to most people. Setting up my first emulator was an absolute bitch.

5$ isn't even worth the gas+time and effort to meet up with someone, just to download and extract it to his computer. He'll probably ask questions and take more of your time. There are better ways to make money than this. I even doubt that he'll have that many customers in his area anway.

>implying Nintendo's legal department gives a shit

They're more concerned with catching actual thieves and people who infringe on their copyrights than arresting some random Joe from Albuquerque for downloading 10 NES roms from Internet.

Also what's with the sudden influx of "playing on emulators is against the law, I will report you to Nintendo!" moralfags?

>> No.1406007

>>1405997

It's not about emulators being a quasi legal area. It's about, people trying,to make money off of it. If anyone should be making money from an emulator it should be the guys who spend their spare time coding them and dumping roms. Or the original license holders.

>> No.1406014

I'm not talking about this specific thread. There's a lot of people here on /vr/ shitting on emulation threads claiming that playing on emulators and downloading ROMs, for free or not, should be prosecuted.

Precisely. Most of them don't. You obviously never worked in tech support. Hell you probably never worked in an office environment if you don't think that's true.

Well if his first emulator was something like epsxe with all that plugin bullshit I can understand.

Arcade emulators like MAME and FBA can also be pretty confusing for first timers.

MAME is not hard at all to run most people are too stupid to get a full romset for a single game. They get like the 300kb english patch rom but dont even get the 2mb main rom and wonder why it wont load when all they have is the text and maybe some other graphics for different regions.

>> No.1406162

>>1406134
That's why I didn't say it's hard, I said it might be confusing for first timers. Romsets aren't exactly an obvious concept for the completely uninitiated.

MAME devs also don't help with their bullshit of changing roms and filenames every couple of versions or so, so you have to get a romset that's compatible with your mame version. That's not an obvious concept either. It's all quite unintuitive when you think about it.

but what the fuck is 300kb going to do? Like if you are not any sort of retard you should know 300KB isnt enough for TMNT the arcade game

There was a user on this very board like half a year ago or so who was wondering why his emulator wouldn't retain any settings between sessions, and then it turned out he was running the program straight from inside its zip file every time.

Can you link to one specific instance of this? Emulator wars and hardware purist rage is common, but I've never seen what you're talking about.

This isn't as bad as a the people on Craigslist that I see trying to sell modded consoles (xbox, wii, psp, ds+flashcart) with shitloads of roms trying to make $100+ more than the systems are worth by selling illegal copies. Usually their listing goes away after they get reported, but I hope the scumbags never made money from it.

Never seen this here. The biggest complaint from /vr/ are the purists who wont settle for any flaws outside of the original game/hardware.

On topic: I've seen this type of shit since the late 90's. As someone who pretty much grew up in the warez scene, it's pretty damn depressing to see people still get away with this.

The point someone is making a profit from pirated material. Offering paid services to help setup software is fine, but bundling games you have no right to sell is wrong. And charging $1 per game after that? This guy is an asshole.
