I have to say Descent 1 is definitely my favorite game of all time, no question.
I probably have upwards of 5000 hours in the first two games combined, and 99% of that was actually multiplayer. I played these games online pretty much every single day of my life in high school.
If you've never given these games a shot, you owe it to yourself to try them. I feel like anyone who browses /vr/ would enjoy these games on some level, no matter who you are.

How is the Steam release? Did they bother to make sure it works on modern OS without any tweaking or was it another half assed release of an older game?

>> No.1401339

And it's been on GOG for ages now.

And there are source ports available, eg:
http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/

>> No.1401616

>>1401260
DOS games on Steam come with DOSBox and required configurations.

That said, I used the source port mentioned by >>1401358.

My nigga here. Descent multiplayer is some of the most intense, challenging, and fun multiplayer out there. Every pilot you come across will have a different flying style, and no two games are ever alike. It's like playing chess at mach 2.

>> No.1401997

I remember playing this as a kid, but never finishing it. Did it age well?

>> No.1402019

>>1401997
Depends, what does that even mean? It is still as fun today for me as it was nearly two decades ago.

>> No.1402052

Source Ports>DOSBox anyday.

Someone should seriously mention that in the Steam recs.

>> No.1402059

I'm willing to bet the Steam version is exactly the same as GOG, so everyone should grab this stuff:
http://www.gog.com/forum/descent_series/the_definitive_collection

Descent in a way is a secret treasure when it comes to mods.

>> No.1402285

Never played this game before, but I'm curious, would this best be played with mouse or joystick?

>> No.1402314

>>1401997
Gameplay is still unrivaled.
>>1402052
Yep. People are on top of that.
>>1402285
Personal preference.

A 3D controller according to some but acquiring one and getting it to run on a modern computer may be a difficult undertaking.

I played it with the numpad.

>> No.1404743

>>1402285
I didn't try setting up a joystick, but I a modern gamepad with dual analog sticks seems to work pretty well when set up like a console FPS. It has the advantages of analog and the lack of mouse's finesse doesn't matter since the view is so wobbly anyway.

>> No.1404773

so hows the game on the ps 1?
is the singleplayer worth a play?

>> No.1404791

>>1402285
Joystick with twist for rudder works well, just set the rudder to roll, use WSAD for forward/back/strafing, spacebar for altitude up and ctrl or whatever for altitude down. Turn off autoleveling and shit.

The rudder is what makes a joystick superior to mouse imo

Descent1 on ps1 has identical singleplayer to the PC version, while being crippled by the limits of the dualshock1.

>> No.1405212

>>1405204
I don't think Descent has DualShock support at all.

Funny, I was just going through my ps1 games and I have descent... I didn't even know I had it.

>> No.1405272

Works fine with a Dualshock or Wii Classic controller Pro. I tend to make roll L/R2 and leave auto-leveling off. Fuck auto-leveling.
