What are some Sega Genesis, SNES or GBA games with amazing stories? I want to feel some feels like they used to make them, man, they sure don't do video feels like that anymore

>> No.1400557

gba isn't retro, but play the mother series. ffvi has feels but can come off as melodramatic or pretentious. ecco can give a real feel of hopelessness.

GBA isn't retro.

I always get emotional at the end of SNES games where, after you see the ending, all of the characters say goodbye to you.

Shadowrun SNES

Phantasy Star IV: End of the Millennium, for certain.

Especially if you played 1 & 2

The Mother series, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Live A Live, and Terrinigma come to mind.

>they sure don't do video feels like that anymore
Play Nier and prepare for feels you didn't even know you could feel.

>amazing stories
There really aren't any. Some jrpgs had some likeable characters and decent writing, but the actual stories themselves are either elementary level HRR SAVE TEH WORLD or convoluted for the sake of being convoluted.

Link's Awakening (suppose it's technically not a GBA release), where the central quest is to assemble this sort-of melancholic symphony on this weird island... the feels deluge that is Seiken Densetsu 3 actually begins on the 'Press Start' intro... will monitor this thread for feels

>> No.1401216

Well, if by "amazing", you mean "melodramatic oldschool anime", play Phantasy Star IV and Lunar 2 on the Genesis. If you don't get oldschool feels from those, then retro JRPGs can't be your thing.

The 4th gen and earlier isn't really about having stories.
It is about the overall experience and becoming "good" at the game.
It is about beautiful mechanics, well thought out controls, and innovative play.
It is about how play, graphics, and sound come together overall to form a cohesive feeling, and provide challenge.
The length of a game from start to finish could be 30 minutes, but it might take hundreds of hours to beat.
Not because of narrative length or even amount of content but because you must master the mechanics by playing the first 3 levels over and over and over until you master the game.

Easy to play.
Hard to master.

That is what the 4th gen used to be about.
You are barking up the wrong tree.
The 5th gen is where stories start coming in.

If you are searching for feels you have to finish Mother 3. Its by far the feeliest of all games(and other media) i ever consumed. Ending delivers especially glorious mix of feels. Its not retro though. As for SNES and SMD, i don't remember any games that made me feel stuff besides tension, frustration, wonder and fun. But i don't play much jrpgs, so maybe there are things besides Mother and Earthbound out there that fit your criteria.

Shining Force 1 + 2 will always be a personal favorite. There is also a remake of the first one for GBA that has a bit more story in it.

Terranigma. The story itself isn't all that great, but the way the game tells it makes all the difference.

>You're passed out on the couch
>Your bro is drawing a dick on your face
>Your mind goes on an epic journey to wake up in time to slap his shit
>Since you're already awake and shit, might as well play with yourself after the shit slapping is done

That's what I like to boil down the story to.
