Hey guys so today i pulled out Crash Tag Team Racing and started playing it. I forgot how good it was and it got me thinking which of these two kart racers are the best, CTR or Mario Kart 64. What do you guys think?

>> No.1397907

Not tag team racing, just CTR. CTR blows MK64 out of the water - the tracks are better and the mechanics are better with more nuance (MK64's kart handling is probably the poorest of any Mario Kart).

Crash Team Racing is a whole different level of polish compared to the game it copied; it's a late-generation game whereas MK64 was released the same year as the N64 itself.

Both games shit on Diddy Kong Racing's dull tracks and uninteresting mechanics. But PLANES! is the only thing cool it even tried to do.

>> No.1397942

Mario Kart 64 is pretty much the weakest entry in the series

>> No.1397959

CTR by far.

>> No.1397991

>Single Player
The CTR main game is better, if only in the fact that it is more of an adventure than MK64. MK64 is a tournament, CTR is a full-fledged Collectathon.

>Multiplayer
Depends on what you like. I feel the battle maps on MK64 are far better, but the mechanics of CTR are their own fun. On terms of single races both single and multiplayer though, CTR wins out.

>>1397850

CRT has much nicer graphics. Those 3D models blow MK64's sprites out of the water.

Also Naughty Dog were god damn masters at the PS1 and did things no one else could with it. Remember the water in Crash 3 that was almost as good as the water in Wave Race? They could have made a whole Wave Race game on the ps1.

Have you ever fucking played Mario Kart 64? It is fun enough to beat once or twice with a friend, but it is slow, it is ugly, and the computers are fucking jokes. I don't even remember the last time I wasn't in first place.

too bad PS1 games are so aesthetically unpleasing today

MK64 looks great; there should be a new game with that graphical style but hi-rez comic-book-style sprites

why can't Indie devs give us that instead of homosex?

to each his own, but I think MK64's handling is the best in the series

Been awhile since I've played the SNES one, but the GBA one was unplayable when I went back to it though I loved it at the time, DD's karts are too long and they turn too slowly - it feels like the tires are pizza pans, DS is pretty good but power slides charge way too fast, Wii is the most boring by far it just feels so meh, and 7 is the only one competitive with 64 IMO which is why I am absolutely hype for 8

Nitro Kart is like CTR's spiritual successor but it has a slightly weaker roster (16 vs CTR's 15 with like 5 or 6 new characters taking up old slots occupied by bosses and such), 5 less tracks, slower, and has slightly tweaked powerups and stuff to compensate, there's also a stage hazard and an infinite item frenzy gimmick to compensate as new mechanics but they're not too special

Tag Team Racing is a totally new thing and it's not very special at all, it's weak as fuck compared to the previous 2, and the writing is really bad and the roster and track designs are even worse

the iOS games are very forgettable

>> No.1399095

>>1399093
i forgot to mention too, they were planning in original development of Nitro Kart to bring back all 18 stages from CTR with new tweaks to compensate for the new mechanics, but it ended up being cut, it probably would've been the best part of the game too

Just be aware that Mario Kart released in Japan 3 years before CTR released in America. You're comparing something from early in the 64's lifespan to something that came out right before y2k

>> No.1400087

I fucking loved CTR. My mother and I used to play the shit out of it. We would take turns, race after race. I don't think we 100%, but we got pretty close.

I know we have this thread almost every day but its nice that people are more passionate about which game they like a lot rather than which one is shit.

>>1398965

I also remember playing both MK64/CTR back in the day. If it's one thing i liked, it was the joy of jumping of a slope, ramp or ledge and then gaining a speed boost. I barely thouched MK64 ever again after that.

on the topic of Tag Team racing, i liked that game too. it was easy as fuck, but i loved the merging cars mechanic and shooting other racers with my turrets. the post-naught dog games really werent so bad imo

>> No.1400957

>>1400829
It's a really good fucking game, but you'll get bored of it if you're actually good unless you get a group to play with. The online public matches are usually full of really bad people so you'll probably just end up shitting on everyone 90% of the time.

It's pretty good, as someone who played it just last year for the first time. It's ugly as sin, but I feel that way about most PSX games. Beyond such cosmetic affairs, it has some good depth to the racing, some of which Mario Kart took a while to catch up with. It gets one big beef with me in that the music blows IMO, and that's a big part of games for me, but all those 5th gen racers never had music in multiplayer anyway, so it's not much of a thing for talking multi. It's worth a play.

definitely pick up 7
I bought a 3DS for 7 and was not disappointed
plenty of /v/ people race in the /v/ community group for it
the retro tracks aren't straight ports - they tweak them a bit for the new mechanics and it's actually cool that they did
It doesn't have mission mode like DS though :(
I thought that the gliding and underwater driving would be gimmicky - the gliding is awesome and underwater driving isn't as boring as most reviews say, it sometimes adds an extra layer to the tracks which is cool although gliding is definitely way cooler
