I've always been fascinated on how people worked with the limitations of the N64's hardware. I guess that's why I like Rareware so much considering what they did on the system. Reading development stories on older consoles (specifically fifth gen) is so interesting to me versus reading one about a new game.

I find the N64 controller awfully designed but not uncomfortable. There wasn't a single point where I had to stop playing a game because of the controller. I would hate to have to design a game around it, though.

It's not necessarily that controversially unpopular an opinion, but I think that the N64 and the DC were both pretty lackluster systems (I wouldn't go so far as to call them awful, but I might just be being polite).

They just had incredibly disappointing libraries, and for me, that's something that a platform lives or dies on. Their gems just aren't good enough to make up for the fact that either console only has a handful of them.

I think the Dreamcast especially comes off as a bad system these days because all the great games on it have been ported to other consoles. It was also kind of a weird console because most of the good games were just arcade games ported to it. I would disagree if you called it awful but I think it gets a little more love than it deserves.

N64 had far too many gems to be a bad console in my opinion. The problem with the N64 is that there were so many absolutely shit games on it. We talk about all 12ish excellent games but once you begin to stray from the acceptably good games you're quickly entering shovelware territory.

I was really thankful to have a PS1 over an N64 back then though. It seems like N64 titles stood the test of time better though.

I mean I'm not knocking the good games they do have, it's just that compared to the PSX or even the Saturn there's just not nearly as much mileage you can get out of either the DC or especially the N64 as a whole. If you're the kind of person who likes to play a lot of games (like I was at the time), then their technical advantages over everything else available at the time still weren't enough to make them all that great as a whole.

Bloodlines is the best Castlevania by a longshot.

Superman and Raiders of the Lost Ark are much worse than ET and deserve a lot more hate because they messed up even easier properties to base a game off of.

Every time I play Zelda II, I remember how much better Konami handled a side-scrolling combat system in The Lone Ranger and just play that instead.

Sega CD only still gets flak because of the AVGN review and anyone with a brain knows if they made the CDX their second model, sold the add-on for cheaper, and really sold the CD-ROM to developers they way it happened on PCs, things would've ended up differently for Sega in the 90s.

Megaman 7 is one of the best games in the series. The only thing I hate, is the final boss which is just cheap and unfair IMO. There's many things SEGA could have done to have things turn out better.
Like, you know that special 3D chip in Virtua Racing which did better 3D than Nintendo's Super FX and Super FX 2 chip? At one point they were considering making a lock-on cartridge to house the chip, and making an entire line of games that used it, that way customers would only have to pay for the chip once and 3D games would be as cheap as any other games. If SEGA had pursued something like that and not bothered with the much more expensive and cumbersome 32X, things might have turned out different.
The main thing that would have helped, no matter what other decisions were made, is SEGA Japan not killing off the Genesis world wide when the system was at its peak and had another 2 or 3 good years of dominating Nintendo left in it in the US and Europe.

All I see in the Sega CD is wasted potential. There was suddenly near infinite storage space and what did everyone do with it? They squandered it all on FMV shit and ports. That is true. But the reason is obvious. Zelda is in great part a puzzle game, once you figure out the puzzles of the dungeons, and no longer get lost as in not knowing where to go or what to do, there is not much point in replaying it.

But that happens to all games in which the hard part is figuring out puzzles and finding out where to go, once you do that, the second time you play the game you breeze through.

X series. Doesn't really make sense to compare X games to classic Mega Man or even Zero and ZX.

Well, X6 game just plays nicely. It's responsive and feels great. The other games feel incredibly slow compared to X6, especially the SNES titles, and it gets especially ridiculous when you equip certain parts on your character: it becomes a stage-eating platforming monster. X5 was laggy and slow; last time Mega Man X felt that good was in X4. Zero's a beast in this game, too.

The only annoying thing are the reploids and the rank system. I crafted a bunch of saves that have everything collected but no stages cleared. Took quite a while, but now I get to have fun whenever I want.

My favorite Zelda game so far has been Majora's Mask. Maybe it's just that I liked its focus on character interaction and the way it was set in a smaller region with a higher-than-usual dungeon density.

Eggman is a better, more fun name for him than Robotnik. Robotnik for a bad guy sounds extremely dated now that we're more than 20 years after the end of the Cold War and over a decade removed from our bad guys suddenly getting Arab names on 9/11, while Eggman, silly as it may be, just fits more for a series where we're supposed to take an anthropomorphized hedgehog somewhat seriously as our main character.

Mortal Kombat has always actually sucked, but in the early (pre-4) installments its suck was part of the charm, along with the ludicrously bloody nature of the series compared to anything else out at the time, and I liked it at lot as a kid when I was too young to know it wasn't really that good, but now that I've played other, better fighting games, I no longer enjoy it as much as I used to.

>> No.1400649

That thing which happens to Zelda also happens to Metroid (both games are similar).
The first time you play Super Metroid you may spend the whole morning and afternoon playing it and getting lost till you beat the game.
Once you know where everything is and you know the map like the back of your hand, you can beat it in a couple of hours.

That doesnt make them bad games, 2 metroid and some Zelda games are among the best games ever, but they don't have the same replayability as Civilization, multiplayer shooter games, fighting games or platformers.
They are an experience more comparable to a movie or book, as in, you beat it, think it was awesome, put it in a shelf, and may pick it up again years later, not play the same thing for months.

>> No.1400849

>>1400649
Wow I disagree entirely with this. Metroid games have a ton of replayability when you come back to them to see how you can beat them the fastest. Zelda doesn't have this aspect because 1) it doesn't record your time and 2) it's not really built to be an enjoyable speed clear experience in the first place.

There are two different Metroid experiences. One the first or second time you play it and then all the subsequent times after that. And Metroid not a platformer? Shut up idiot.
