I want to buy a Sega Saturn. Any suggestions and recommendations? I'm already thinking of Virtual On since it looks like decent fun and it's not too expensive online.
For the record, I'm not interested in any of the fighting games aside from Megamix.

Basics:
Model 1 or 2 is fine. 1 is harder to mod if you want to go down that route, and the Model 1 controller is garbage, but far less common. Try to get an Action Replay 4-in-1 cart for saves/memory expansion.

GAMES:
Clockwork Knight 1 & 2
Mr. Bones (Not great, but it really is something you should experience)
Daytona USA
Tomb Raider
SEGA Ages (Saturn had some really great arcade ports)
SEGA Rally Championship
Shining Force III
Astal
Burning Rangers
Rayman
Saturn Bomberman
Earthworm Jim 2
Herc's Adventures
Mega Man 8/X4

If you're considering modding your console but are too lazy/scared to do it yourself, a premodded one can come pretty cheap (http://www.segastyle.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=50))

Fuck me I meant to say grey. Christ, I need to go to sleep...it is sort of green, though.

There is a v3 mod chip that installs easily in model 1s...easier than the same chip into model 2. Its ribbon cables to and from the mobo and CD drive board and a 5v power wire. That's it. Works great!
I recently got a Saturn and will tell you if you're just interested in playing a few games, by all means get a mod chip. Games for this thing are so expensive, unless you buy the Japanese versions.

If you live in Europe, I can sell you a modded pal machine. (modchip + regionfree bios + 50/60hz switch)

OP, you need this mod chip (and an action replay).
Buying physical copies of Saturn games is a rich man's hobby.
>For the record, I'm not interested in any of the fighting games aside from Megamix.
Woah - for a while I thought I was the only Saturn owner who wasn't into fighters
Here are some titles I enjoy:
-Dark Savior
-Panzer Dragoon Saga
-Elevator Action Returns
-Metal Slug
-Burning Rangers
-Bulk Slash
-a million shmups with complicated Japanese names (if you're into that sort of thing)

white saturn looks better plus japanese versions of games are cheaper

Man, what happened to those big buttons on console controllers? They just stopped showing up after gen 5 barring the Gamecube's A button and triggers.

Best looking saturns are, in no particular order:

- Hi-saturn (black with dark grey top and khaki buttons)
- MK-80200A-08 (a black saturn with the japanese logo)
- Hi-Saturn NAVI (a monster)
- SKC-1000 (a giant karaoke system that also plays Saturn games)

PAL model 2 machines also look okay.
White saturns would look cool but the purple open button is ridiculous and if you leave them out on the sun for one day the entire machine turns piss coloured.

Noob question; if I want to get a Saturn, can I install a mod chip in a PAL machine and then play games that I've burned onto CD-R?

Another Saturn-related question: is the Japanese version of Rayman playable if you don't know any Japanese?

Why would you play the japanese version?

Because I have a Japanese Saturn and no Action Replay yet.

You can region patch the games prior to burning.

Yeah, if you have a soldering iron. However, some games may glitch up or not work at all in 50hz.

or just ask this guy for his machine

From what I remember in my PSX version as a child, there was barely any text, and what little text it had were level titles and shit. Don't worry about it.

To add on to this in case OP doesn't know, I highly recommend a 4-in-1 Action Replay cart to bypass the region lock so that you can play JP versions of games (or just a JP Saturn if you swing that way), because many JP games, although still fairly expensive by /vr/ standards, are a fraction of the price of the US versions, plus a lot of good games for the system never made it to the States.

Action replays eat shit.
Get a regionfree bios mod. No more annoying AR boot screens.

What's your price and your country?

>> No.1391878

Don't. This is a shitty time to get into the Saturn because all the prices flew up. Even one of the mod chips jumped from $40 to $80.

I live in central Europe.

Shipping included, 100gbp to Britain and ~120eur to most of Europe (may be more or less depending on where you live).

It's a PAL machine, with 50/60hz switch next to the battery (VCD cards still fit inside), region free BIOS, and a modchip, all preinstalled. Plus a controller, RCA video cable, and power cord (europlug).
