What are some of the ones you have played?

>> No.1382843

A lot of them, period. I just can't deal with rubberbanding properly. F-Zero in particular boils my blood.

>> No.1382881

Jet Moto 2 is just too much. There is one stage where I litterally cannot even turn the first corner 2 seconds into the stage, even if I go as slow as possible. And I hear the first one was even harder.

F-Zero X on Master gets pretty hard.

as long as it isnt tied to power ups (like mario kart) rubber banding is a nessary part of racing games.

If you race well you can gain a huge lead in the first lap, if the ai didnt have rubberbanding, than after that first initial lead the ai would have no way to win.

Once you become really good at a racing game you can start manipulating the ai, figure out exactly what triggers their 'catch up' and learn to anticipate it and react properly.

Sega GT for dreamcast.
maybe its meant for a wheel but holy shit i cant even get past the first license tests and I gold everything in gran turismo

Extreme G got pretty tough on the hardest difficulty because of the enemy attacks.

>pass 2-3 racers and take first place
>suddenly 5 different missiles and bombs come flying at you from behind
>go from full shields to zero instantly
>as each other racer on the track passes you they each shoot their own rocket effectively locking you into place
>you are now in last place on the final lap with no boosts

Fuck that shit. It was especially bad on the tracks which had segments with no railing where you could fall into lava and such.

I don't know about anyone else but this was a bitch when i would play it in the arcade when i was a kid. Getting your car all turned around and banging elbows with the dudes next to you.

San Francisco Rush, I gave up on racing in that game and just focused on getting dem keys

>> No.1387532

San Francisco Rush isn't that hard, just play death races and kill all the other cars. Kind of defeats the purpose of racing, I guess, but it's fun as fuck.

F-Zero GX (yeah, not retro but fuck that)
Also, every single racing sim, because they are all boring as hell

>> No.1387669

>>1387532
It's no longer racing if you play it like that. Might as well just play the 2049 battle mode.

Also, if you're playing the arcade version, death races aren't even an option. Good fucking luck.

Arcade racing games in general are pretty difficult, now that I think about it.

Wipeout 1 isn't insanely hard, but it can be rough even after you've gotten good at the game. You only have 3 laps to pass all the AI ships, only a few retries in tournament mode, and you basically have to race perfect laps with a solid racing line (hitting most of the speed pads) to get 1st place. And you can't turn off weapons so there's a bit of a random element whenever you're close to other ships.

I can get 1st place on all the tracks individually, but I'm never consistent enough to get overall 1st in the tournament all in one go.

>> No.1390452

Destruction Derby 2, for the PS1. I got so frustrated with being unable to place well in the race mode that I started smashing up other cars, since it says you can win points that way in the "Wreckin' Racing" mode, but no matter how many points I put on the board I was always ranked after the guys scoring points by winning the races even though their numbers were lower. I guess I didn't understand the scoring system but more to the point it was simply hard as balls to race well in that game, felt like the lead cars were all supercharged compared to you.

>> No.1390476

>>1390452
that shit on the n64 was insane. Having to beat the tracks in record time to unlock cars was damn hard.

it doesnt have to do with the coding.

Once you get an 8 second lead on the rest of the racers its pretty hard for them to catch up without rubber banding. You will stay 8 seconds ahead unless you really, really screw up on doing some turns which is unlikely given that theres no one to interfear with you

>get a quick lead on the other ai racers in the first lap
>enemy ai doesnt have a rubberbanding advantage

what fun, its like I'm really playing time trial mode!

>> No.1390493

Jet Moto 2 is the easiest Jet Moto.

Abuse the fuck out of grappling, learn to slow the fuck down when it comes to it, and use the shoulder buttons for sharp turns (while also slowing the fuck down).

>> No.1390497

Not a really hard game, but I played Cool Boarders (specifically the second one). Simply racing is easy enough, but when you have to rack up the style points it gets pretty tense.

>> No.1390519

Maybe I'm not remembering it right...

but I swear I have memories of putting F-Zero X on it's hardest difficulty and it being so lame It kinda made me stop playing it.
You'd start the race and within 5 seconds you were just at the back of the pack no matter what you did...it made no fucking sense.

Wipeout is pretty rough, still can't beat Firestar with Qirex.. There's a lot of really great details in this game that they left out in the others. You can hear the crowd cheer when you pass the spectators, there are different pilots with backstories, and they all have a win/lose picture when you finish the race. I think 2097 is more satisfying to play, but aesthetically the first one will always be the best.

When you choose your car, always pick the pro one. I've never done well with the slower rookie/amateur models. After that it's the standard driving game practice of learning the courses, and getting comfortable with drifting.

Sega Touring Car. It's an easy game, but I never mastered the controls, it's like running on the ice. I could say the same about Vanishing Point, on PS1/DC.

>still not knowing what "necessary" means
If you used your brain for 2 seconds you might consider that there are other ways of making the AI a challenge. You can't be so stupid as to think every challenging racing game has rubber banding.

>> No.1391061

>>1390489

If the AI is actually decent, you shouldn't be getting massive leads in the first place.

Diddy Kong Racing. The basic races weren't so bad, but the silver coin challenges (especially in Adventure 2) and the boss battle races could get pretty brutal. Freaking Wizpig demanded near-absolute perfection.

Wipeout's one of my favourite series as a whole.
2097 was the first I played and still my favourite retro entry.
I went back to play 1 and hated the handling, everything was too bouncy around corners.
