I've started playing SH1 this week on Hard difficulty. Reached the first boss. I have to say those little suckers are the most unimaginative monsters I could think of in a game, or at least when I saw them, not that I played many games, but they just seemed too simple. I heard they're the replacement of the original japanese release...not sure... but they don't die, do they?

I think if you complete it faster than 1:30:00 (maybe the cut-off is 1:00:00) you unlock ever special item at once. For example, normally you would need both one Good and one Bad ending to get the Katana, fast completion gets it after just one playthrough with any ending.

Yeah, those games were pretty awful.

It's worth noting, however, that they sprang from and ran on the same engine as the actually excellent PC horror game Nocturne, which came out in 1999. The main character of Nocturne is in at least the first Blair Witch game as far as I know, so they share a universe. Also, Bloodrayne was initially planned as a sequel to Nocturne.

So what the fuck is Nocturne? It's a pretty neat survival horror game where you play as a mysterious secret government man hell-bent on eradicating your typical cast of horror movie monsters. It didn't sell well but in my opinion the action, characters, graphics, and general atmosphere make it well worth playing.

Lets be honest with ourselves /vr/. SH and RE literally are the best horror games ever, at least at first they were. Its no coincidence that the genre seriously died out once both game series changed. Sure there are those new ones made by the indies but it isn't even close to the same. Indies are just making it more niche then it was before.

SH I would say is without a doubt the best horror series. RE second place but might have the more fun gameplay imo. I want both of these series to make a glorious comeback ;_;

>> No.1388729

I picked up Silent Hill 1 a few weeks ago, and I couldn't get into it thanks to the tank controls. I don't know how we dealt with that shit in the 90s.

I got to the school and stopped because it was a frustratingly clunky pile of ass. It kinda takes you out of the mood when you concentrate more on fighting the controls than the environment/monsters/puzzles, you know?

>> No.1388741

For that guy who said PS2 isn't retro yet, well no it isn't and imo shouldn't be for the foreseeable future.

>came out late 2000
>so it should at least need another 2 years or more to even be considered retro

However the big problem with this is that Much of PS2 plays functionally similar and even looks similar to modern games. Notice how NES-Snes-Genisis-PS1-64 etc, are very different from any modern game today both in looks and mostly the way you play? PS2/Xbox/Gamecube games have far too much similarities one can draw even with PS4/One/WiiU games. Which are literally barely an upgrade from PS3/360.

I guess others might have a different opinion than I do but I say it should be 20 years with the exception of 64/psone era due to the fact that they are functional and appearance wise very different from even their successors Wii/PS2.

>It kinda takes you out of the mood

Key word it takes "you" out of the mood. I am not trash at games. Especially not easy horror games like the SH and RE series. Your just plain bad at games to not be able to play tank controls. I will never ever have a problem with them.

I am playing fallout 1 right now and it felt a little weird for me to control since I never played an RPG of its type before. In just the tutorial cave area I eventually got the hang of how to play the game and its mechanics. Did I come to this image board and whine and give up like you did? Nope

These games were meant to be played this way. Not with a 3rd person camera controls like every single game in existence now.

>> No.1388869

i recently finished a replay of SH1 as an experiment if my ipod touch could actually emulate a ps1 game. Turns out it can (but it eats the battery, holy hell) and the games is still very intense, especially since this was like the fifth time ive replayed it. The touch screen controls were a little wonky and oversensitive/undersensitive at times, but other than that it worked well.

the scariest part for me was the run from the mall/grub boss fight to when you get to the amusement park, motherfucking monsters are on your ass the entire time and you dont get a single second of respite in the nightmare world.

one thing i really liked that isnt present in the later silent hill games is the gradual and subtle transformation of the levels between normal and hell, especially near the end when youre running through the sewers to the amusement park and the entire level goes from "normalish sewer" to "rust fences and blood" as you run through it. I actually never noticed that one before this playthrough.

I do think that anybody that says that old silent hill/resident evil survival horrors were only scary because of the limited ammo is smoking crack. not even being conservative with the weapons, i was swimming in ammo and health items by the hospital and drowning in it by nowhere. the hospital was the only place i chose not to blast fools all the time because that was when you get the best melee weapon in the game, the fire axe

I just really dug the atmosphere of it. I think they left it open-ended on purpose, but yea- I totally agree that it didn't feel like you got the big payoff in the end.

Doesn't it almost seem like that 'Doom' movie with The Rock totally ripped off Martian Gothic more so than Doom?

One of my favorites, man.

1 was better in a different way, but I loved all the different power paths you could take, the boss fights were excellent, and the controllers were completely fine after playing enough RE3.

It does now that you think of it. According to MikeNnemonic you were supposed to be drinking sake or something at the end and they left it out.

Thief: The Dark Project and Sanitarium are both great horror games. Funny that most retro horror games have poor gameplay but great atmosphere and yet modern horror games are fun to play but lack atmosphere and generally lean towards action. Thank god for indie, we are entering a new golden age of horror all thanks to PewDiePie

I love PE1 and PE2. They're really different games though. PS2 is kind of much more standard "RE-style". I still like it. My main complaint is how limited it is, as you just kind of explore this rather boring town in the middle of nowhere. Dude I want to explore LA or NYC.

Amnesia and all those other haunted house simulator games are terrible. If that's the golden age you're talking about I have to say it's a pretty disappointing one.

the sad thing is the fact we will never see fanservice like that one again in videogames because we are now in times of "political correct".
