I never tried the Windows 95 version of Doom, but chances are the Setup program is compiled on 16-bit. In that case you should try looking for a 32 bit version of the setup online.
Hopefully it doesn't install a DOS version of Doom 2, because otherwise you won't be able to play it natively on anything over WinXP and you'll have to use DOSBox, Virtual Machine or copy the WADs to a sourceport.

you can install and run games from CD on dosbox. It's essentially the same thing as getting the original doom II files online, though.

Lookup dosbox. I recommend d-fend as a frontend if you aren't dos savvy.

Chocolate Doom
Some run this and others just use Boom

Find a decent source port instead. If I'm remembering right, the Doom games have that awful pre-WASD control scheme.
And installing a source port doesn't mean you will be forced to use those awful 3D models, corny lighting, and hi-res textures that dont look that great.

Just no. There is no reason to emulate doom. It has many good source ports. Personally, I'm using zDoom, but I'm a bit out of touch and don't know how good it holds up these days.

I used zDoom, too. It shouldn't really matter what you're using if you just want to run vanilla Doom and a few old wads

It's trying to run DOOM95. Gosh, I remember seeing that window a lot back then.

>monolith inc

hey that's the same monolith that went on to develop NOLF, FEAR, and Shogo!

Grab the DOOM2.WAD file off the CD (or out of the install directory) and throw it in a source port. Chocolate Doom plays just like the original, low resolution and everything. ZDoom is a good modern port on Windows. PrBoom is easiest on Linux because it's OSS-compliant and thus in many repositories. (Also, ZDoom still uses FMOD, which fucking sucks. Someone made an OpenAL fork and the maintainer rejected it because IT MIGHT BREAK PWAD MP3 SUPPORT OH NO.)
