What is it with this game, and this series? I have such vivid memories of getting lost in these backgrounds, feeling slightly overwhelmed and uneasy at the implied depth. The art and sound in this game are so defined and different from anything else even in the same series.

Game backgrounds/Kirby/Unease thread

you're not alone. I always felt a sense of unease playing kirbys dreamland compared to the comfort of super mario land.

No, but its also something others have experienced with other games, like Super Mario 64 and that cityscape background.

Weird, I've always wanted to put this into words, but never was able to find the right ones.

You're not alone, OP.

Some of Kirby Superstar's backgrounds felt magic and mysterious, especially those in the great cave offensive

Not that I'm aware of. It's a pity that those skybox textures are so small, they look nice.

While i love a lot of 2D backdrops nothing beats RE for me. I could get lost for hours looking at all the details in the pre-rendered scenes.

Am I the only one here who doesn't understand what this thread is meant to be about?

>> No.1372426

I know what you mean OP. Or at least my version is this.

I always got from background like Op's a sense of desolation. Like Op's background picture is beautiful in a sense, but the desolation of the environment I imagine around that background is unnerving. Being in a field with those clouds and that setting would be nice, but being alone in it is just plain creepy or perhaps depressing. Mario was another one. The desolation and lack of of people in the castle and the environment unnerved me. This is my attempt to describe this at the very least. It's really hard to actually describe it.

That's actually a part of it that I didn't realize. It is a very bittersweet reaction, so it would make sense that its the beauty and depth mixed with the sense of loneliness.

>The background of Wet Dry World.
I took me like ten years to realize that city is supposed to be the small underground town under the main level.
I just now realized the whole background city is also under water.

Fucking Nintendo 64 and its low rez backgrounds.

Also, pic related.

I always got this feeling with Sonic backgrounds, especially the Sonic CD special stages. I mean look at that shit, why isn't the game set over there, I want to play that game.

Well, yeah. The special stages were pretty freaky if you consider them within the context of Sonic's world. They're just like weird trippy places with all kinds of strange shit floating round.
Like, is there just some place in Sonic's world where a grid of gigantic green hummingbirds fly around transforming themselves to fishes? Is Sonic high?

I don't know if it's true, but I remember reading the special stage in Sonic 1 was inspired by an actual hallucination trip Yuji Naka had when he got intoxicated due to eating some fish.

>Deserted submarine town
>No Koopas or Goombas or Bob-ombs, just windup toys and pond skaters
>Eerie music
>Major gameplay aspect of level is about raising water levels and flooding shit

This level is actually the remains of an old flooded town with an absent or dead population. The only remaining traces are the empty buildings. Unstable water levels make the place uninhabitable to both land living creatures and sea living creatures. Ideal habitat for pond skaters who grew to gigantic sizes.

Anyone feel this way about the Magical Kingdom of Zeal in Chrono Trigger? The place is such a huge contrast with the desolate ice age in that time era, you go through a portal up to the sky, above the clouds, to a practical paradise with soothing music and warm colors. The place has that prerendered 3D look opposed to the pixelart style of the rest of the world maps in the game, which makes it stand out, it's also from a more skewed perspective rather than the top-down of the others.
All the spiritual and magical and philosophical shit going on, together with the mysterious two islands you can never visit, made it stick out as both enigmatic and a bit unsettling.

Fuck, as a kid I was terrified of space levels in 3D games, I thought I'd just drift away from everything out into eternity. I'm glad Super Mario Galaxy was ten years away, I'd crap myself playing that.

The fucking Market place (and every other prerendered area) in Ocarina of Time. They all had this shiny plastic early 3D look to them, which was blurred down by the hardware and then presented with a fixed perspective.
It sort of made you crazy because you wanted to look around freely, like in the rest of the game, but you couldn't, so there was this big mystery around these areas as you couldn't look around them properly.

You had no idea what these places where hiding.

It's sad how most of these look quite beautiful when extracted like this. In the actual game they're horrible.
