>JRPG Master Race report in!

So my friend and I often play games together and we just beat this gem (my eighth time, his first). What's a good follow-up game?

We've already beaten Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Trigger, and Super Mario RPG together

Actually, that's a great idea. The both of started that game independently, and dropped it after a while. Maybe this time we'll beat it.

Thanks /vr/other

Are you each playing the game separately and talking about it as you go, or are you both physically in the same room? If the former, you could discuss the different conversation branches you guys get as you play through Grandia II.

Though the game includes just about every genre convention that exists so you've probably seen it all before, but it might be new to your friend.

Thousand Arms for the PSX.

This is one of my favorite RPGs on the system. The battle system is rather bland, but everything else about it is pretty interesting. It's humorous and has a quirky aesthetic where you have to take women (both party members and not) on dates in order to power up your weapons.

>> No.1370597

>>1370448

You can actually do co-op in the battles in FF9, by setting the control of each character to whichever controller you like. It's kinda pointless, but if you're playing through with a friend, it might make things more interesting to have you both in all the battles.

Grandia was a spiritual successor to Lunar games so you should probably get those next when you get it. Choice between Saturn or PS1 versions is entirely up to you, mainly depending on the soundtrack.

I recently won Phantasy Star IV, that was some cool stuff right there. I suddenly felt like listening to some random encounter music (after hearing the Last Ranker soundtrack for the first time).

I tried PS II but the ugly battle screen made my eyes bleed (why does it FLASH RED every time you hit something?), and I kinda got killed really fast in PS III. PS IV is full of neat humour and pretty pictures, it has a nice battle system even if you have to write down what all the Techs and Skills do.

What game do you folks recommend for somebody who likes PS IV?

Problem with Phantasy Star if you come into it late is that there is actually a continual story throughout all games, they're not like FF or DQ where each game is a standalone. Also, that kind of approach kinda died out with PS4 so I'm not sure what to recommend. Series went online anyway.

His involvement seems largely peripheral at worst, and just someone who proofreads what the actual developers do at best. They also got WAY too greedy with the stretch goals when it seems like they might not even make the base goal. Matsuno isn't exactly Avellone as far as fame goes in the business so you can use him alone to attract people.

>> No.1370656

>>1370645
It's true that they're continuous, but there's nothing you really need to know about Alis, Rolf or the Algo System to enjoy PSIV. If you come into it at PSIV, then everything is explained as you go, and all the 'legend' stuff you encounter is just that. It's a good standalone story and a good translation.

Grandia was never as popular as Lunar, so it never got a port to anything other than the Playstation. The only version on the PSP is the emulated Playstation version, which as far as I recall runs with the same niggling issues as the PS1 port.

I've often considered importing the Saturn version and just following along with a script, but given that the poor Sony translation is one of the issues - I seem to hesitate each time. Hell, maybe I'll try and pick up some rudimentary Japanese. At least then I'd be able to play through the Gameboy Grandia.
