metroid 2 is one of the worst games, high linearity & repetition, slow pacing, lack of good sound effects

going back to what i said about prime, the rail thing is seriously stupid, it's like they didn't want to be any concentrated effort into designing the environment so this was a compromise to not have to think

i'm not sure how you can like fusion but not like other M

Super Metroid > Metroid II > Metroid

Not counting all the other Metroid games because this is /vr/ and they don't exist in this time warp.

I loved Metroid II a lot. It was so unique. I loved the idea of traveling around an alien planet with the purpose of killing an entire species. It was creepy. Some things could have been done better though, so it's still not as good as Super Metroid.

>> No.1370105

>>1370092
Metroid 2 improved every complaint I had about the first Metroid at the sacrifice of having linearity. Then Super Metroid fixed that.

I like Fusion because of the atmosphere of the game and how it handled the X-Parasite and SA-X, which required the linearity to do it. It's a pretty awesome adaption of "The Thing" into a videogame. And it didn't completely derail Samus's character like Other M did, along with the numerous other problems Other M has.

>> No.1370120

>>1370105
The other thing I like about Fusion is that I think it has the best game engine of any Metroid game. It eliminated the floatiness that Super Metroid had with jumping, made the Wall Jump harder to abuse, and improved the functionality of the Space Jump to be more easily recoverable by being able to return to a spin jump by tapping the jump button in midair. Zero Mission unfortunately gimped the height of your jump which made the game feel quite a bit different.

>> No.1370129

>>1370120

the floatiness wasn't a bad thing

it increased the pacing, is all, did not think it was necessary since old metroid games are not action intensive

I can't say what the best 2D Metroid is with ant authority but Metroid II is my favorite. It's one of the few instances where nostalgia had a huge affect on my opinion though. It was my first Metroid and also one of the first four games that was mine. I got it and three other games for a Christmas along with the Gameboy my very first system that was all my own.

Most of the music in Metroid 2 is trying to be straight up ambient rather than music that you can listen to. Super Metroid was able to improve on that by making ambient music that more listenable.

M2 has a pretty awesome ending theme, though.

I'm not saying Metroid 2's music is bad, just that I wouldn't put any of it on my MP3 player. It works well within in the game in setting the proper mood.

Super Metroid, on the other hand, has music that I do listen to outside of the game.

Aw ye, someone made a Metroid 2 thread in here now. After the one on /v/ last night I hope this isn't completely filled with shitposting like that one was.

I liked Metroid 2 a lot, extremely spooky an ambient, very hard, didn't hold your hand, had to make your own maps and shit, a lot of the powerups aren't required to beat the game but do make it easier, but as such are hidden off to the side a lot.

The first appearance of Gamma, Zeta and Omega Metroids are guaranteed to fuck your anus, and if you try to do the last area with the shelled metroids without picking up the icebeam again then you are completely fucked.

Also it's a game where the goal is to commit genocide on an entire species.

Super Metroid is the best, but after that, it's metroid II for me.
great level design, powerups, music! (I love the glitchy, creepy sounds, couldn't believe a gameboy game could make atmosphere so well).
You gotta admit for being an old gameboy game this is amazing, a shame most people will miss on playing it because it's not pretty grafixx in colors (I played it on the super gameboy though)

The removal of the single wall jumping was a big ol' fuck you to anyone who has ever done any sequence breaking whatsoever. Fusion has NO freedom, very little unmapped exploration, and requires you to play through the game one way and one way only. The atmosphere of isolation and desolation doesn't hold up when your shitty ship computer is ordering you around and locking you in areas. It's absolutely a good game by itself but it's terrible as a Metroid game. Like Other M it shits on everything the series used to stand for.

I'd agree with you dicks trashing Metroid II but then we'd both be wrong and you know that can't happen on the internet.

It was great for its time, but so was nearly every other Metroid game. And unlike the others, Metroid 2 aged pretty badly (even worse than the original, despite being released later).

However it was an alright game, it deserves a proper remake like what Zero Mission did with the first Metroid. Either the AM2R guy needs to finish his work or Nintendo should remake it themselves.

>The removal of the single wall jumping was a big ol' fuck you to anyone who has ever done any sequence breaking whatsoever.
Are you saying that you need single wall jumping to even sequence break in Super Metroid? There are a few areas where simply run jumping without the speed booster would let you into areas you shouldn't be in. You could easily design sequence breaking into a Metroid game without single wall jumping.

That said, I agree that the lack of sequence breaking is a negative but I don't consider it enough of a flaw to label Fusion as a bad Metroid game. Being handheld by the computer shouldn't have been done, but the linear path through the game was needed in order for the SA-X to be as effective as it was (granted, it only works on the first playthrough of the game). Yes, I do like sequence breaking, but not having it in a single game doesn't mean it shits all over the series. Other M has more than just one major flaw which is why Fusion is nowhere on the same level as that game.

You don't need it for some items, but you need it to do stuff like early wave beam. It always seemed strange how Super let you do it, Fusion didn't, and then ZM came along and gave it all back again, and also added super-easy infinite bomb jumping.

I get what you're saying, but after the first couple playthroughs the SA-X feels really shallow. It's like, hey, there are like 10 of these on the station, but you'll never see any of them except for like 3 scripted encounters. It hardly has any impact on how you play the game, they don't have any significance outside of those encounters, and I certainly don't think it's a setpiece worth railroading the ENTIRE game for. The way the encounters are spaced it could have easily been restricted to a single SA-X. It could actively hunt you, or have random encounters. But no, it just shows up at those predetermined train stops and ceases to exist otherwise. It's not just that they took out sequence breaking, it's that they made everything linear. Your path through the game has no interactivity, no freedom. You're not given the power to make a single decision for yourself.

Meanwhile, Metroid 2 is like, here's some missiles, here's how many metroids you have to find and kill, get out there and explore. GLHF, try not to get lost and die. I miss having to rub 2 brain cells together to figure out where to go.

Metroid II was my first Metroid, and my biggest gripe is that I had absolutely no idea what I was supposed to do. I just stumbled through the game over a course of years.
I'm sure I'd had it for at least five years before I'd found the first... I'm still not sure what it was.
A boss, maybe? It was some hopping creature that burst from a Metroid.
I was confused as hell when I'd actually reached the last boss.
