Hello /vr/, I know a guy who essentially only has one arm, his left one, and to play his Genesis games, he sets the controller on his lap and sprawls his fingers across the face, achieving some impressive results. I would like to know if there are any Genesis controllers that you could use with one hand, such as pic related, and most importantly if they are reasonably priced.

Since I mentioned an acquaintance who is physically handicapped, might as well stretch this topic to include controllers for the handicapped. This also includes one handed controllers like flight sticks, since you don't need two of them to use it effectively.

Gee, I guess not.

Sorry, never heard of any. That said, I've always wondered how one-armed people would play video games. I never knew they made controllers for that purpose.

I dated a girl who only had one hand/forearm and I discovered they even make freaking DUAL ANALOG controllers for one hand.

However, back in the Genesis days one handed controllers were basically called "joysticks" so what you need to open up your options is pic related.

and then, an ASCII Grip. Pic related. In grabbing this pic of the PSX version I remembered there also was a Super Famicom one but no Mega Drive. I guess they focused on one platform only at a time.

Not retro, but this guy makes custom built one handed Xbox controllers.

My friend sets his controller on his lap and sets his hand across the buttons. He can play moderately well with this system, though I'm assuming a controller dedicated for this purpose would help him much better.

Those are good ideas, except the converter is too much money to be useful. Another useful controller for the Genesis would be the GeneStick, which seems to be even more ergonomic than the Grip-It. However, it costs considerably more, around $35 shipped.

If you're trying to be really cheap just visit your local used game store. If they're relatively large and/or old they're going to have some Genesis joysticks tangled up in with their Atari joysticks.

Generally speaking no one wants flight stick style joysticks so they end up in junk bins and the like for $1-$3. Genesis sticks will be mistaken for Atari sticks because they have the same DB-9 plugs (there will probably be some old PC ones in there too). Just look for something that has a START button on it and it'll be a Genesis stick.

That sounds like a good plan, except I don't have many places near me that would fit that description. Thanks for the advice though, I will keep that in mind!

Never tried them but these exist for the N64 and Playstation.

I had this POS growing up, If I had one arm I could still play better with a regular NES controller

I could probably hook you up for $10 including shipping or almost definitely for $15. I know for a fact my local store has one of those joysticks in the OP in a junk bin I just don't know if they'll charge me $3 or $7. My girl I had there just quit so it's a crapshoot. I also dunno if I can fit it in a $5 flat rate envelope or not but I like to help disabled people enjoy games.

Had friend use something like this when he broke his arm. Worked well enough, but he mostly played RPGs.

>>1367884
I would suggest getting a flight stick and using emulators. Basically keymap the buttons to it so its like a joystick, but with buttons right on it.

That looks like the One-Grip at the OP, and it looks like the base isn't good. Like, the GeneStick >>1368786 has a big base so that you can set it on something easily and move, but that little base won't give you much control or freedom.

>>1368940
I can find one of those on eBay for around $20, let me see if I can offer the seller $15 and be done with it. Will keep in mind.

>>1369171
That's the problem; he only has a Genesis, one that he bought for $100 and included such classics like Last Battle and Sword of Sodan. Thankfully I'm providing him with games he recalls playing in his childhood, so it'll be better.

Another term of controllers that only require one hand to operate would be "flight stick", especially the Quick Shot brand. While Sega got their share of third party accessories, they seem to have been skipped when it came to one handed controllers.

Also, somewhat similar, but anyone know the brand of those oddly shaped joysticks, where you held it from the bottom and the buttons were located by your fingers? It was shaped almost like a rough, fat P, and the advert shown someone wearing a leather glove while holding it. They made them for a plethora of systems, or at least the ones that used the traditional DB-9 plugs. I recall my cousins inviting me over to play Shinobi on the SMS, and they gave me one of those controllers. I held it wrong, and it didn't dawn on me that I was holding it wrong.

You're describing Epyx 500xj. Very old school. My favorite Atari stick, but were indeed produced in the 3rd gen as well.

Awesome, thanks for helping! This obviously won't help since you need both hands to operate it, so thanks. Would either of those work for the Genesis, considering it has 3 buttons + start?

You should be able to find one with its stick snapped off, as they were fairly delicate. I had some lummox snap one of mine off.

Nope. Master System/NES/Apple II/Atari only

There aren't a lot of out of the box options for 3 buttons except joysticks. If you want to get creative or modify a controller there are plenty of options. It looks like that's not what you're looking for though, so just find the most usable flight stick you can.
