Let's have a Sega driving/racing/rally thread.
I just got back into Outrun and its so fun. Passing Breeze and begin playing. Sega made some amazing racing games (Daytona, Virtua Racing, Hang-On, Sega Rally, Ferrari racing game, Sega GT) also some non sega made ones like Metropolis Street Racer and Test Drive Le Mans.

Splash Wave is obviously the best track in the original game, but when I'm playing 2006, this is the track I use:

So good.

I like that one too I almost forgot about it lmfao. It's a good choice as well never was into the Genesis extra track or Magical Shower.

Gameplay of Daytona with real-life supercars. (Porsche 911. Maclaren F1, etc). Several different courses with varying landscapes, and different times of day, like Daytona USA Deluxe on the PC or Saturn had.

Even if it did get a rerelease, no way they could get the car licensing deal again.

If you liked Daytona USA or later, you should play it. And yes, its Sega, of course. On their powerful Model 3 arcade hardware!

Let's expand this to include all classic Sega arcade games.

Who here has beaten Space Harrier?

It looks really good graphically and I will give a shot.

Is the 32x version the best way of playing this? I can't find a comfortable way to set the controls on MAME and there doesn't seem to be any difference.

32x conversion is pretty good.
Also, have you tried using Final Burn Alpha instead of MAME?

>>1352856
IMHO, G-LOC > Afterburner.
Only in their arcade original ports, though.
Most Afterburner ports at the time beat G-LOC ports.

And I'm not saying I dislike Afterburner, Afterburner kicks ass. I'm just saying I prefer G-LOC.

Anybody here use Model 2 emulator?

Playing Daytona USA and Sega Rally in HD with analogue steering, acceleration and braking plus force feedback with a 360 controller kicks ass.

Game Boy Advance 4-in-1:
>SEGA Arcade Gallery
* Super Hang-On
* Outrun
* Space Harrie
* Afterburner

Is (I believe) a good set of arcade (not Genesis) ports. So if you want to avoid using MAME you can all try it.

Also, I myself have been playing
>Kawasaki Superbike Challenge
>for Genesis
The Genesis version, unlike SNES, is polygonal graphics, and they actually aren't as slow as I would think they would be.

Outrun is a good port on the GBA cart, the main draw really Super Hang On is ok, so is Space Harrier if you don't mind the smaller proportions. The sound is particularly good on all of these.

It's just the Afterburner port is a bit of a botch, and suffers the most from GBA's proportions. And so much of its appeal was the fancy cabinet anyway. The game itself is an overrated coin muncher, dying every 5 seconds for fuck's sake.

>> No.1353727

>>1353713
Yeah, Afterburner just ain't the same without that cabinet. It's more glaring than the rest of those Super Scaler game, feels more like a glorified ride than anything.

Not to mention it gives me motion sickness...

Somewhat related, but would these low poly/low detail models be useful for a potential 5th gen homebrew game? Given the texture is 128x128, I suppose it'd be on the PS1. I reckon a homebrew 5th gen game with low poly models and a strong art direction would work good.

>> No.1355927

>>1355905
What is:
>Gran Turismo 2
>Wipeout 3 Special Edition
?

This isn't from a game. Just some artist (in case anyone wonders)
I bet this kind of detail would be OK for a DS too.

Heck, I wouldn't mind another game with polygonal graphics as long as it had detail and huge selection of tracks and bikes/cars/ships in it.

>> No.1356009

>>1355927
I was talking about a hypothetical level. I reckon it'd be a good exercise to manage to squeeze 60 FPS out of an N64 game, despite a handful of games already doing it.

>> No.1356050

>>1356009
Yeah I know. And if the popularity of low-poly threads here are any indication, people would love it if some indie game actually dwabled in it.

>> No.1356051

>>1356050
>indie game

But that defeats the purpose, what's the point of doing low poly for a machine with no limits (PC), when this technique was mandatory for lobotomized consoles like the N64?

>> No.1356080

>>1356051
Low-Poly objects still require skill to be able to deliver a lot of detail with little polygonal count (a bit similar with low res sprite) although good texture take care of most of the work.

If you cut on power demanded to have your objects/scenery you could technically increase your draw distance and object count.

Of course low poly style by itself is already it's own appeal.

Also, if that meant cutting on size (textures, mesh 3D data) you could have more content and/or faster loading times.

I love OutRun. Local arcade has it and I do a couple of plays every time I go in. High score is just north of 22 million, theoretically could get more than 30 million with my best times per stage.

Of course I always listen to "Splash Wave" as it is best, but what is the best route? I really like right, left, right, left to get my harem ending.

Final Edition really does look better than the XBOX port, though they both play incredibly well. I really wish this kind of belt-scroller-derived 3D brawler was more popular and respected, though I understand the love for Castle Crashers and company.

>> No.1359153

I love Sega racing games. They were the masters of the arcade racing genre, and i find it weird how they just stopped making them. Outrun 2 SP SDX\Outrun 2006 and F-Zero AX\F-Zero GX(yes that is a Sega game) are still the best games in the genre IMO. I found it weird when sega outsorced that Sonic and Sega racing game to a western developer(Sumo digital). The game was ok i guess and the sequel was pretty good, but its not comparable to those 2 awesome titles i mentioned above. And AM2 keeps doing NOTHING, its pretty sad... they didnt produce anything new for like 7 years and then last year they made a Hatsune Miku game.... pretty sad

>>1353648
Those ports are very far from arcade perfect, you should stick to mame or get a saturn ports if you dont want to emulate. The draw distance in GBA ports is especially ridiculous compared to original games.Rearanged Hang On music sounds pretty good on gba though.

AM2 did Border Break recently, which still needs its PC port with tons of options and good netcode at the least. Remember, SEGA Race TV still hasn't received any port at all! That fits the bill for a SEGA racing game, for certain.

Sanic all star kart transformed was made by some of the people who made metropolis street racer for the DC, Project Gotham racing and geometry wars. I enjoyed the second one but I bought it on steam becasue of the Shenmue DLC and more characters I enjoy it but i forgot to check to see if it works on my pc and it really doesn't so I felt fucking stupid but its a B + game great usage of older IPs liker Outun and AfterBurner. But I wish they added ToeJam and Earl or even Bayonetta and Hornet (for the laughs).
