So there was a time when game consoles tried to look visually appealing themselves, rather than just the black or white bricks they are today.

Which console do you feel looked the best /vr/?

If it came down to it, I'd have to say that even if the model 1 Sega CD was a hardware-related nightmare compared to the second model, it looked pretty damn cool.

It's not that new consoles don't have visual appeal, it's just that older consoles were more seen as toys than anything else. Now they're trying to integrate it into young adults entertainment systems rather than the 12 year olds play room.

and yet the Wii-U is a big white brick

I remember being perplexed by the Dreamcast not being colored black when it was first coming out, but I grew to love it, especially for how small it was overall.

Genesis M1 had a Retro-Future thing going on, and the Sat and DC were sexy little numbers themselves.

The PC-Engine is also a cute little machine.

Super Famicom I like better than the look of the SNES, but they're still both pretty cool.

Today's style IS to be sleek slabs of plastic, a la Apple. While I personally think it makes things look a little cheap and non-distinct, it's hard to argue with market forces.

Apple has some of the most famously stylish industrial designs in consumer electronics these days, and the basic shape of their hardware tends to be very simple boxes. Minimalism is the in-thing in electronics design these days: you focus on what you're doing with the electronics and the device itself just sits back and looks vaguely cool without attracting too much attention.

And in the particular example of the Wii U, I think Nintendo made a fairly overt attempt to make the case "match" the controller. Two black rectangles with rounded edges.

Nothing compared to the excitement of having a real super famicon, before it was even released in the states. I was about 15 years old

It was just such a radical thing, compared to the NES. Those colored buttons, and holy shit there was 4 of them, and 2 on top. The graphics of pilotwings, or area 88, or gradius 3, or super ghouls and ghosts, it just felt like the entire world was new, and anything could be made better. The feeling of playing SF2 on my snes was probably the point at which I was most in love with technology.

But yeah, physically the supfam was mindblowing to me, and I felt slightly diminished when I saw the shitty american one. At the time I didn't really mind though, I was still in love, and the ride just continued with the release of zelda 3, final fantasy 5, and dragon quest 5. (super metroid and FF6 were still a long ways off) All those delicious moonrunes, it was like the world was suddenly available to me.

There were other reasons for me having such a weird attitude towards that super famicon, but I often wonder if kids get any kind of satisfaction like that now, playing Playstation 7 with call of duty 17 which looks exactly like every version that came before it.

A black or white brick IS visually appealing.
The weird angles (and inability to stack them) and cheap colored plastic of a lot of older consoles is one thing that I definitely don't miss.

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Zeerust

It's like with the Genesis and the Playstation, they tried to make them look as futuristic as possible. Whereas nowadays everything looks all minimalist. I sort of miss the old designs. Fucking hell, the Nintendo 64 practically resembled an alien spaceship.

Except it wasn't tacky. In the 70s, it was classy to have real wood trim, wood paneling, shit like that. Then in the late 70s, fake wood was invented and startedto get popular with people who wanted thelook of real wood for cheap, which cheapened the look of real wood and that's the process by which things fall out of fashion.
