People mostly hate Sonic 06 for having shit gameplay and story, not for having different aesthetics. "Culminated in 06" is a silly thing to say for that reason - very few people take any issue with the aesthetics. Not only is it totally insignificant compared with the game's REAL issues, but the majority of people didn't mind the change in aesthetic when Adventure and Adventure 2 did it.

I was there, yeah. I don't remember what everyone hated at the time though, and I don't much see how opinions at the time are all that relevant compared with how people feel now.
But hey, if you want to go there, people generally loved Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 when they came out, aesthetics and all.

If people were complaining about human characters in 06 as much as the gameplay being garbage, as you claim, then I need proof that this was because they did not like aesthetics, and not JUST because the models and animations for humans in the hub were shit quality placeholders, or JUST because of Elise being romantically involved with Sonic. Those issues are the game not being finished and the game having an awful story respectively, they aren't present just because the setting is somewhat realistic.
