>> No.1343959

I used my VCR to record FMVs and cool scenes from games. I also recorded songs from the radio on cassette. As you would do.

But there's no reason for using either anymore. Recording to a video tape might be easier for an amateur but the quality is going to be awful, especially if you're digitizing it and compressing the video further. Nothing looks worse than something someone captured from a videotape and threw up on youtube.

> want it to seem i am from a very primitive area

But WHY? If you're going for a certain aesthetic using the imperfection of videotape, you're going to lose a lot of that by digitizing it with a highly compressed video codec. It'll go from looking bad to pathetic.

>> No.1344801

Lossless isn't practical for "normal" videos. Ideally you're just going to have to encode at a really high bitrate. And if youtube is still more or less the way it used to be, they're going to butcher your video further, so something like Vimeo tends to be better if you're sharing it online.

I'm not an expert on this per se, but I see people fuck this kind of thing up enough to know what not to do.

Oh yeah I forgot about that. But it's only really certain MD games that use dithering like this AFAIK (Earthworm Jim is another notable example), and if capturing RGB you could probably add some horizontal blur to produce the same effect without the other shitty qualities of NTSC/PAL colour e.g. dot crawl, rainbowing, etc.

Well, a few SNES games (pic related and jurassic park) use the 512 pixel mode (pseudo-hires) to create transparency in that way.
This means that the SNES has an effective pixel clock of 10.64Mhz* and the capture device samples in the BT601 format which defines the samplerate at 13.5Mhz and chroma subsampling of 4:2:2 (full vertical and half horizontal color resolution) resulting in a chroma samplerate of 6.75Mhz.
For comparison: My 24" Trinitron TV KV-C2521D made in 1991 uses a TDA4580 which has a bandwidth of 8Mhz for it's primary inputs and 10Mhz for the secondary RGB input which is used for Teletext.

*
PAL subcarrier frequency = 4.43361875Mhz
PAL SNES master clock= (PAL subcarrier*4)*1.2
PAL SNES pixel clock=master clock/2

I've never seen any timebase issues, but maybe that's because I use it to record for any coaxial signals, quickly review it, and then record it to a DVD. I've never seen any older recordings or pre-recorded cassettes, so make of that what you will.

Laserdisc is obviously going to be better about it because it's a disk read at CLV instead of a 2.5cm tape recorded and read on a helical scan.

>What is head switching noise?
I'm afraid that doesn't happen a lot during recording or playback, at least with S-VHS. There's a reason why VHS and not the compact cassette, even with noise reduction, was a staple of amateur audio.

I always wondered why no console used cassette tapes for games, considering how expensive cartridges were to produce.
Now I know why.
