This game right here is goddamn amazing. Square made a ton of games that never made it to the US, especially in the SNES era, but it's a crime that this never came here. The way the game is split up and employs different gaming genre styles but keeps the core gameplay is genius, the music is fantastic, the story is engaging and the characters are fascinating.

Live A Live gives you 7 scenarios in 7 genres right from the start. Most of them don't have random encounters. One has almost no battles at all, just a mystery and a monster--when it catches you, you die. One chapter doesn't even have dialogue and still manages to communicate everything you need.

It's one of the very few Square games that are actually fun to play (and that has a story that's actually good). Even Secret of Mana was boring and tedious to play, action RPGs are usually fun and fast for som opts for clunky and slow.

The only thing that carries most other Square games is the music, which IS awesome, but there's little else that's actually engaging. And it's not like I hate jrpgs, I love Dragon Quest, FFs and the like tend to be just too slow and convaluted.

Live A Live wasn't a prototype for CT; Secret of Mana was. Some fans think of Live A Live as a predecessor of sorts for CT because it uses different characters in different time periods.

But Live A Live is much better. You have several different scenarios, most of them really good, that offer a lot of gameplay variety. Each one has a unique "gimmick" that don't get old. The characters are great, the plot ties together in the end through an awesome twist you'll hardly see coming, and the music is very varied. The battle system allows you to move and aim your attacks however you wish, and does not revolve at all around grinding.

On the other hand, Chrono Trigger offers you a linear story, wait-for-bars-to-fill-and-mash-A battles that are really boring in comparison with Live a Live, and a shallow plot with toriyama stock characters. Of course, the graphics are way better than Live a Live's, but that's all it has going for it really.

Try Live a Live, at the very least it's a lot more interesting than CT.

Whichever you like the most. If you don't mind knowing what you're in for each, here's the lowdown:

Ninja: stealth-based gameplay, although you can dismiss it and kill everyone. Optional bosses and rewards based on your choice to either be stealthy or kill everything. One of the longest scenarios.
Kungfu: story-driven with few fights, you get to choose and train different characters on kungfu styles.
Sci-fi: no fights at all, this is almost like a graphic adventure.
Wrestler: just fights and no story, this is like a Street Fighter/Megaman mix with bosses using the game's battle system.
Cowboy: set traps with a time limit which influences the boss difficulty.
Caveman: no dialogue, but still plot and exploration-driven. You get to explore the fields for "random" battles (you can actually see them on the field). Fairly long too.
Mecha: personally I hated this one, it's this nonsensical anime plot with a mindreading gimmick. Lots of battles and backtracking and plot focus, it's kind of long too.

Just pick whatever sounds interesting, most of them are so short they don't overstay their welcome (except for mecha, fuck that). The order you play them doesn't really matter, but after you're done with them you unlock new scenarios.

I don't know if the movie road would be good, I think merely having a fun battle system would make it a lot better. I don't think it's complicated at all. You move and you choose an attack, the enemy moves and chooses an attack. The fact that you have no "regular" attack, but only different fighting skills, may be odd but it's not complicated in the least.

Games aren't more expensive to produce. Cinematic cutscenes are more expensive to produce. The problem with big studios is that they've been taken over by corporate execs from the major media companies, so games are produced like major blockbuster movies: make things look as pretty as possible, don't worry about the actual plot/gameplay, and overinflate budgets for use in advertising. It's a failing model that exists in the top but you're ignoring the people who aren't at the top who are still successful.

what other teams did anons used for the final chapter?

first run:
yuan, akira, pogo and oboros

after that i reloaded a save before i meet le devilking and tried a few different combination of characters(with yuan still as main).

found out cube was a much better healer, but can't do much damage because i only crafted 1 robo weapon(chick gun) in akira's chapter and didn't equip on akira so i can't transfer to it cube. akira does have a powerful basic kick if you give him the best +STR equips.

masawa(street fighter dude) was disappointing and wasn't worth the grinding. highest HP but damage was mediocre.

didn't bother with sundown because he's a pain to recruit again and grindy because he starts at lvl 6 or something.

Nah. I hate JRPGs. I won't say I hate everything that technically falls into an RPG category, but I'm bored to tears by any game in which clicking through menus is the height of the action. Call me a philistine, but I just can't enjoy wandering around and killing rabbits and sewer rats and shit with my menu cursor for hours on end so I can have enough experience points to get to the next exposition dump. The "challenge" of a JRPG is to have the patience of a saint, and the reward for overcoming the challenge of your boredom is exposition dialog to explain why you're going to need to be patient again for the next several hours/days. It should not surprise you that this is not everyone's cup of tea. Some people feel attached to the characters after being miserable with them for a week or two, some people feel determined to see the story to the end because it already ate up weeks of their time, and I suppose some people just really like doing basic math, but there are those of us who don't.

That said, I like Einhander and Ehrgeiz. Gun Hazard is pretty fun. I run through a main-series Front Mission once in a blue moon because I get all giddy about giant robots, but I always want it to be over long before it is, and it's not even half as boring to me as a full-on JRPG.

But Doom is my favorite game, and I'm sure a few of you RPG-heads think straight ratmaze FPS games are just brainlessly clicking on shit over and over. And you know what? That's fine. Varied tastes engender better discussion.

Live a Live is pretty cool and an example of why people miss old Square. They took a risk and did something unique. Of course, it was flawed, as the battle system was kinda easily a usable and certain characters could trivialize the game. That being said, the concept and genuine effort put into the game makes it pretty cool to me, although I still prefer Chrono Trogger and FFIV/VI.

I just wish Cube's chapter wasn't the worst chapter in terms of replayability.
