Do you use filters when emulating retro games?
Which is your favorite?

>> No.1340068

Pixelate filter, to correct the aspect ratio while preserving sharpness.

>> No.1340093

slight AA
that's about it, I never minded the sharp pixels for the most part.

>> No.1340102

fceux and snes9x (and probably other emulators) have "NTSC" filters that blur and flicker. I fucking love them

>> No.1340136

For awhile I went through a period of trying to find the perfect filter to give that CRT look. NTSC filters, crt halation emulation, phosphor pixels crap.

Eventually I just realized it all looks like crap, and the only thing I really want from an emulator now is 25% or 50% brightness scanlines. Ironically, with the rise of all these advanced pixel shaders trying to smear your signal into a blurry mess, simple scanline filters have been almost impossible to find in modern emulators.

>> No.1340145

None. I am not a fan of emulating effects so I rather see the raw pixels.

Just be aware that nearest neighbor scaling IS A FILTER as well. You're scaling the image by x4 or more, which is drastically changing the image.

>>1340136

"Simple" scanline shaders replicate an effect that has never existed ever. That is, if you're talking about the simple lazy ones that produce black lines like this (exaggerated for humor of course). No tv ever looked like this. Instead, the scanline shaders now can offer scanlines that are lighter and mimic the colors around them, which is more accurate and less noticeable.

Integer ratio nearest neighbor is not a "filter" as the word is used in this thread, it is merely changing the pixel size. There is no standard for number of subpixels per pixel, and in the case of CRTs it's not even consistent between different parts of the screen.

However in the case of non 1:1 pixel aspect (eg. SNES/NES) integer ratio is too restrictive, so something like the pixelate filter is the best option.

Japanese 80s computers inserted black lines between every line due to the unusual resolution of 640x200.
Removing that by line doubling them instead is the only filtering I do aside from magnification because the image is too dark otherwise.

Same, I always use the "NTSC" filters. The "hd" ones look really bad to me.

DS emulation is one of the few times where I feel like I HAVE to improve the image in some way; the resolution is horse shit for all the 3D it tries to show, leaving you with distant objects as a few pixels that can't retain their shape and lines on terrain that shimmer as you move.

It's such low-res 3D that the ordinary magnification filters on their own are really really bad at mitigating those problems (sometimes making them worse), but yesterday someone in emulation general figured out how to get Desmume to turn on multisampling in its OpenGL 3D mode, which in turn is enough to get the regular filtering options to actually improve its 3D shapes. So I've been using that and playing DS games again; I can actually get the 3D looking nonawful now.

Is that you, Lilith?

>> No.1340578

You're always using a filter unless you play on a CRT.

>> No.1340579

I generally don't use filters, other than the basic 2x or 3x, depending on the resolution of the game. Bare pixels are fine by me. But if it's a 3D-heavy game, I like to apply some minor filtering to the models, at least.

You know, maybe I'm overreacting, but my first reaction upon seeing that is to punch myself in the face.

That said, I prefer to go in unfiltered; none of 'em seem to do it for me, heck, if anything, it just seems to make it worse. Though OP's filter seems to be fairly decent, though.

Yes. I like how the official trailer video is capped at 360p and the actual gameplay footage is limited to a small square taking up a quarter of the space in the video, surrounded by Amano artwork. It's like the marketers saw it and were embarrassed to show the public.

You could use an aperture grille filter with scanlines but that would require a 4k display.

Then you'd also need something to simulate the raster beam itself, which would need a display with something close to 1 MHz refresh rate.

No, never. I consider the option to turn of filtering completely one of the many advantages of emulation.

I like pixels so sharp I could cut steel with them.

That said, OP's filter is not that bad.
The scanline thing only looks good on a curved screen CRT though. Don't know why.

You know, the real system actually has a level of anti-aliasing for some games (like SM64DS) so it's actually not supposed to look that terribly jaggy in the first place. I haven't tried DS emulation in a while but last time I tried I was pretty put off by the lack of AA options. I notice the lack of AA where it should be in nearly every emulation screenshot or video I see. Even games like Pokemon have some AA to improve some effects.

What we really need for DS emulation is the ability to actually turn up the resolution for 3D graphics. It would probably have to be a hacky thing implemented on a per-game basis, but we really need it.
