Lives up to the "rapid" name, everything moves super fast, almost no delay between stages, tons of popcorn enemies swarming down in patterns at high speed, crazy fast scrolling backgrounds

Supposedly, the only reason they were beating on the SNES was because the Battle Mania team was given the shaft when it came to development tools, while the team making the SNES game got the best end of the deal. I don't remember where I saw that, but that was the case.

Vic Tokai was DED anyway.

Maybe someone remembers my post in the previous threads but I finally found the game I was looking for, even though it looks like my memory was very blurry.

It's called Medicalat and is a nice short horizontal shmup made with the enterbrain shooter maker 95.

You control a girl armed with a syringe and fly through a dreamworld. You can either detach the syringe from you and it will shoot projectiles or you can equip it and absorb enemies and (most) projectiles and fill up your energy bar that lets you unleash a powerful beam once it's full. Although you have to be careful not to overload your energy bar or else you will lose one block on your life bar and all the energy. Sometimes there are pick-ups that fill up either your life or energy bar. The graphics are pretty bland but I think that it's worth a play because of this interesting mechanic. (although I am not sure if it hasn't been done before).

It's freeware and you can find it on google. Sadly I get an error message when I try to run it (Direct Draw: gibberish)

Thunder Force III definitely. Most people who are good at shmups can beat it in their first or second sitting without trying too hard and it's still an incredibly good game.

It'll also lead you into Thunder Force IV, which is the greatest of all time.

Hellfire isn't bad, but Giares just has that great shooter mix of lots of challenge and lots of options for making your ship crazy powerful.

Careful ebay watching is the only way. It's very frustrating how many scheisters try to make a quick buck on ebay. I kept on waiting for Layer Section II to be offered at a reasonable price before I just got fed up and purchased the [superior] PS1 port of RayStorm. Thunder Force V on the PS1 is also cheaper.

You can still find the greats like Soukyogurentai or Sexy Parodius in the $50 range.

The cheapest shmups are Darius Gaiden, Galactic Attack, and the Gradius Deluxe Pack. Most of the rest are $40 and up. I think I got Darius II for $30 a few years back, but you really, really gotta like Darius II to pay more than that (even at the time I felt like I paid too much!).

I've been playing a lot of RayStorm and RayCrisis for the PS1.

I think I like RayCrisis a bit more; it's more dynamic and challenging than RayStorm. But the tilted perspective and drift of both games is a pain compared to their predecessor, RayForce, which is certainly a 10/10 game for me.

The arrange modes of both games are gorgeous though. I snapped up RayStorm's Neu Tanz album using some iTunes giftcard sitting in my bedroom for over a year now. RayCrisis' arranged album is also really sweet.

Also play some Thunder Force V in there from time to time. I like the game, but I wish it was a little tougher!

Hey guise, maybe you'd know the answer to this. Several years ago, at least prior to 2009 but probably several years further back, I remember seeing my cousin playing some game that looked resembled Galaga or Space Invaders on a PS2 except that between waves there was crazy 3D shit going on. The gameplay during waves seemed normal (except for crisper graphics) but between waves the camera would flip around and show the approaching wave. I remember it looking cool as fuck (at the time) but I never figured out what game it was and wasn't close enough to those family members to ask afterwards (wouldn't even know how to get ahold of them). Does this ring description ring any bells for anyone?

I know PS2 isn't considered retro, but if it's a Galaga or Space Invaders update then it should still count I think. I only remembered about it recently when I found out about this updated Pac-Man game.

Oh, and the fact that in Gradius, most of the difficulty comes from the stage itself (enemies, enemy fire, as well as stage hazards you have to fly around) and the boss encounters are usually easy as piss compared to everything that came before it.

Oh, let's all get the scoring system and "play for score". Too bad chaining isn't fucking fun, like the rest of these games. The entire things are designed to anger and frustrate you. Oh, you get a true last boss on one fucking level! Wow, pardon me while I make the universal motion for a handjob. Evacanneer Doom fucking sucked. What did it do, exactly? It let you DODGE BULLETS, something you were able to do the entire fucking game. Oh, also you looked gay.
There are some interesting power-ups in the games, such as Hyper and Kakusei. But guess what? You can get them on like 2 levels total, and if you fuck up and get hit or bomb ONCE, you lose them, FOREVER. Wow, that's fun! I love games that demand I play perfectly or have no fun, because I'm a fucking jap who strives for absolute perfection in gaming otherwise I kill myself.
Cave games may have been interesting or fun at one time, but the games are worthless pieces of shit in today's day and age. They're horribly flawed and full of punch-in-the-dick moments, much more so than they have moments that are just fun to play.

DaiOuJou is much more fun played for survival, for example.

>>1359265
Lots of shooters, but I prefer non-bullet-hell games.

Also, I think Psikyo games are often more fun than your average Cave game. There's no self-masturbatory scoring system in most of them, and the design is really pared down to the essentials. Dragon Blaze being an excellent example.

>> No.1359898

>There's no self-masturbatory scoring system in most of them

You're putting way too much importance into only one aspect of the game. Score is only one way of measuring skill in a game, and it isn't *the* deciding factor. If you are in TOP mode you get 2x scores, and if you do a Miracle win (perfect life + less than 20 second elapsed from match time) you get a 50k bonus...

in survival I could finish under 2 minutes with Grant but only because the CPU is retarded and you can spam hcf+D, dp+C+ {A+B}, repeat, and it will eventually do a failed counter and you can do high damage corner juggles.

Scoring in shmups is a risk vs reward thing. Eventually if a player gets good at clearing a game, they will be facing easier/weaker enemies the same way every time. Scoring systems reward a player for being more aggressive and taking risks, keeping those parts of the game interesting for experienced players.

The SF2 comparison is silly, but I agree with you that the quality of a shmup can largely be judged and experienced through playing for survival. However, I disagree that shmups are good in "spite" of their scoring systems, as it does add depth into the way a particular game is played, so when someone plays it at that deep of a level then it's certainly a major part of the quality of the given game.

Ah, then yeah sucks they removed the option to play those. I actually found a link to the last version that had support for the other Cave games a year or so ago to play Deathsmiles and it worked great, but that was a reformat ago else I'd upload it for you, sorry. I just use my 360 for that now.

haze UME is a version of mame that is recently enough compiled to support cave CV1000 games

the mega link is a working set of CV1k roms

the other one is just a bunch of great classics included with a build of shmupmame that might be old

MAME updates are a pain to deal with. Some games end up working after I update, but others need the updated romsets. Eventually, I just said fuck it after downloading the roms two different times and stuck with the version I had originally downloaded.

Is there a version of MAME that I can save state with on Raiden Fighters Jet? I finally made it to the final stage and I'd love to be able to practice it a little more. I'm not sure how much gets messed up when I save in shmupmame 4.2, but it seems like only the music gets screwed. It'd be okay if that were all that gets messed up, since I enjoy listening to my own music when I'm heavily grinding out a game.

I am so fucking shit at SHMUPS.

I just started playing them and I started off with Gradius Gaiden. The farthest I've made it to was stage 5, then I got my shit handed to me.

I have no idea how I get past stage 4 if I die during it. I just cannot dodge all those moai heads with my dinky little single double shot, so my run pretty much ends if I die there, so I just start over.

How do you deal with this damn stage as a fresh ship with no upgrades?

I don't know if this is the right place to ask but does anyone remember a hentai SHMUP for PC? I remember seeing it many years ago, maybe around 11 years ago? sounds like a lot but i'm not sure

It looked very cartoony, colorful and simple and the characters were drawn in anime/manga style, the main character was a witch riding a broom with a pinty hat like the one from touhou project and i think she had a pet crow, i really wish i kept the game but my big brother was the one who showed it to me and after the first stage a NSFW scene popped up and said "hey you can't see this it's a porn game lol" and deleted it, thanks in advance.

I actually just played The Guardian Legend yesterday after not playing it for a few months. It's basically a vertical SHMUP crossed with The Legend of Zelda. As bizarre as that sounds, The Guardian Legend manages to pull it off beautifully.

My ONLY complaint is the ULTRA-long password system. At 32 characters (4 characters times 8 fields), it's even longer than the password system in Metroid. Good thing I still had a picture on my cell phone of the last password I saw (I used the real system; the password shouldn't be an issue if you use an emulator)

>> No.1364192

It depends on the version.
Arcade and PC-Engine versions: Not sure; I haven't played them enough.
NES version: Yes, easily. In fact, with enough practice, it becomes difficult to NOT 1CC it.
MSX version: Almost a definite NO. I say "almost" because it HAS been done before; but the MSX Salamander game is one of the most stupidly difficult SHMUPS ever made.
In fact, the only way to truly beat the game (i.e. get the good ending) is if you find the "Crystal Breeze" hidden in either 3rd, 4th, or 5th stages (it changes), but you'll NEVER find the "Crystal Breeze" unless you have Gradius 2/Nemesis 2 installed in the 2nd cartridge slot at the same time!! Otherwise, when you complete the game, it will eventually tell you that your mission "Turned out to be a failure after all". It's as if Konami deliberately tried to make the most difficult and infuriating SHMUP ever, and they succeeded!

>>1363665
That pic appears to be taken with a scanline filter. I personally don't like scanline filters (i.e. emulated scanlines); for me, it's either real CRT scanlines or no scanlines at all

Practice.

Credit feed to learn the game.
Start limiting your credits to find out what parts you are dying or bombing lots at.
Learn the score system of the game so you can earn extends.
Use savestates to practice the parts you're getting stuck on.
Don't just mindlessly grind parts. If you're having trouble, think of why you're getting stuck, what types of bullets the enemies are shooting (spreads, streaming, beams, etc) and try to think of a way you can minimize the danger you're in.
Don't get discouraged, even if you are really stuck practice doing one thing well to build up that skill. After a while all those things come together and you will have a breakthrough.

I think Pink Sweets is probably the most fucked up rank system in a shmup. It only raises, sometimes heavily using the rose cracker, and there is no way to lower rank.

Battle Garegga has a tough ranking system, but at least you have a lot of options to control it and ways to lower it.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of rank systems, but for some people they add alot of depth and replayability to the game trying to ride the line between aggressive scoring and keeping things survivable.

>> No.1367725

>>1367712
I think adaptive difficulty is an excellent way to lend extra replayability to a game. I just don't like overly cryptic bullshit like in Battle Garegga though. Darius Gaiden's system is fun (once I figured it all out) and I know it's not Retro but Hellsinker does it very nicely as well (actually has an indicator and such so you know what affects it).
