EASILY goes to my top three gaming disappointments of all time. It first happened with going from 96 to 97, that was just kind of confusing. Then later when I got 98 I just couldn't believe it.

I.. I'm not disagreeing with you, man, or anything. And not complaining about the games, they're fun.
And it's not like sports games can vary, they are the same. Goes without saying there's no quests to stop opposing team goaltender from becoming pikachu and taking over Mars or suddent fishing in the game. The rules don't change too much.

NHL 95 was SORT OF different, it was clumsy and all that and 96 was a big step up. But then they just stopped putting effort into anything.
It's just so mind baffling that they have the balls to release the same exact fucking game three times. I mean, did they even do anything while developing the game? Yes each game has the teams with different players, but you can do that in the game anyway. You can sell, trade and create players, it's not an excuse. It's not different or anything new when the game is changing anyways. IT'S NOTHING NEW, IT HAPPENS THE WHOLE TIME.

With these games they did absolutely nothing. They just.. I feel like they just didn't care. At all.

I guess there's not much they could have done differently without radically changing either the perspective or the mechanics. There were other hockey games I played on the Genesis, and none of them nailed it like EA did.

They removed the gameplay and upped the highly detailed and somewhat sexualised descriptions of other characters' flesh wounds. If you listen closely you can actually hear the writer breathing heavily behind you as he slowly jerks of while you play.

Yes. I don't like messing with the encounter rate in any game, though, it feels like I'm tinkering too deeply with the game mechanics.

I don't mean that the battles are depicted slowly, I mean that brave mechanic that has you planning ahead and issuing three or four commands to each character for random encounters to preempt your enemies hurting you slows the game. It's complicated enough to focus your attention more than spamming attack but it's not really much more mentally stimulating. Also the enemies, particularly bosses, tend to be damage sponges that live an unnecessary 10 or 20 minutes longer than when you've cemented your strategy and have no chance of losing. I guess SMT has spoiled me on that count, though.

Also, while I'm shitting on the game I thought the art style was really drab and uncreative. I think it's the most depressing looking Square RPG I've played. The plot was also really dull for the first 2/3rds of the story, though I get the impression that was intentional.
