So how does /vr/ feel about making custom boxes and inserts for their existing games? Anyone do it in their spare time?

Picture related. I got sick of my Trouble Shooter insert and made a new one that more closely matched the Japanese release.

>> No.1328438

So I take it you guys go for original boxes when possible?

>> No.1328446

Custom boxes are a whole lot of trouble. Same with the inserts.

If I really wanted that one, for example, I'd import a Japanese trouble shooter game.

>> No.1328460

I think it can be a lot of fun. As long as you can use Gimp or Photoshop and have some time on your hands, why not?

Custom boxes are great for MVS game collecting if you don't have each game's kit. They look super nice on shelves.

>Not my collection

>> No.1328521

Want to elaborate on that OP?
I'm planning to buy some plastic cases for my N64 cartridges and update some of the cover.
Where do you buy cases and do you print them yourself or do you order prints. Also what paper are you using?

>> No.1328527

>>1328460

Agreed. If I had a printer, I'd do the PAL artwork for my NTSC copy of Ico.

Any tips as far as printing goes?

>> No.1328626

>>1328527

Go somewhere to have it printed. shitty home printers are not what you want to use.

>>1328521

Any paper is fine, but I'm not as picky as others. Genesis paper ranged from magazine paper to cardstock so it's really preference.

>> No.1328646

I also like costum covers.
I see you kept if very classic, OP. I'm more a fan of really outstanding ones.

>> No.1328662

>>1328646

Deviating too much from the original styles of the cases gets difficult. There are a ton of cases, especially japanese ones that don't follow any one design, and when it's not uniform it gets really complicated and time consuming.

>> No.1328668

>>1328662
I keep it more minimalistic.
If done right it can look great and isn't too time consuming.
Of course you will want to catch the essence of the game in your cover so playing it is a must.

I love those boxes that come together to form a picture.
Reminds me of when anime VHS's used to do that.

I spent a few days making European DS case covers for my Game Gear carts. Originally they were going to be colourful and use the official art, but that would have required a decent printer/money and high-res scans. In the end I dropped everything but the essentials, and came out with something that printed well on my laserjet while looking Sega-ish.

That said, I might revisit it one day. I'd like to try and replicate the title art + art + console name art thing they used for most of their consoles.

>> No.1330126

>>1328420
Whatever floats your boat dude. I keep my carts loose. Who wants to keep opening that shit up? Same with CD/GD/DVD. Cases boxed up somewhere and discs in one of those CD holder things. Some people collect games to show off and some people collect games to play.

>> No.1330218

>>1330126

"collect to play"

Why not just burn your games and use flash cartridges if all you care about is playing?

>> No.1330231

>>1330218
I usually collect loose just because it's cheaper and I'm a poorfag. Plus some CIB prices are fucking ridiculous.

That said I've always been intrigued by custom cases. If I'm bored one day and they're not too troublesome to make then I'll give it a try.

What's /vr/'s stance on Universal game cases? Waste of time or good alternative to original boxes? I want to do cases for the original lufia, Soul blazer, and Illusion of Gaia too, but I cannot for the life of me find any good scans.

I just did one for Lufia 2 since the U.S. art was so bad and think it turned out pretty good.

So does nobody here like Universal game cases? I wish I could make full cardboard boxes but I have no idea where I would start.

I've tried the cover project but can't find everything I'm looking for there. A lot of japanese sega cD game scans are damn near impossible to find.

It shouldn't be too hard to make your own cardboard boxes.
I have somewhere a tutorial to make those cartridge holders that are inside the boxes.

I think it's a neat idea to make your own cases, your collection will look 100 times better.

It's great especially for Reproduction Cartridges. here's another one I just finished up. If I had a cardboard box template I could probably make full boxes, but UGCs are fine for now.

For reference, the art I wanted to do for Shin Megami Tensei was from the Japanese SEGA CD version, but the biggest image I can find is the one hardcore gaming 101 has up, and that isn't very big at all.

Anyone know a site with japanese SEGA CD scans?

Wouldn't that need to be like a photoshop file? I've never heard of the site that's watermarked on the back though. Do you think they might have something I could edit in gimp or Photoshop so I can edit it better?

This should be a great start, thanks. have you done this before? If so, any specific paper/cardstock you recommend these be printed on?

Now if I could only find a way to make new SEGA genesis cases. Should have bought as many old sports games as I could when I had the chance.

Yes, looking around a little bit I have found templates on their site. You need to register but that shouldn't be a problem.

Matte photo paper or cardboard paper.
You can easily reinforce it if you feel it's not thick enough.

Original SNES cartridge boxes are of low quality, it's easy to make boxes of far better quality.

Chromonorm2 is pretty good for cardboard boxes.
