ITT: Underrated gems on the NES/Famicom

Pic Related.

I wouldn't say it's underrated, more like unavailable. In order to be underrated people actually have to be able to buy the game without it costing them hundreds of dollars. Also, it's on the Nintendo E-Shop now, which can't be said for a lot more well known titles.

Gradius 2 on Famicom
Doesn't get discussed much, but it has some of its own levels and full size bosses. Also speech.

Slightly reminds me of the famicom macross game. Look cool though.

I'm not sure underrated NES games exist anymore. Pretty much everything worth playing has been found, and spread, and enjoys a decent amount of acclaim, both because of constant discussion like this very thread all across the web, and because of Let's Plays and internet personalities and shit which frequently deal with NES games.
Ufouria, Kick Master, Gimmick!, Adventure Island IV, Little Samson, Bucky O'Hare, Fire n' Ice, Crystalis, Kid Dracula, Wai Wai World, Shatterhand, Metal Storm, Clash at Demonhead, Vice: Project Doom, Jackie Chan’s Action Kung Fu, Cocoron, Moon Crystal, Magical Kids Doropie, Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom, Gremlins 2, Journey to Silius, The Guardian Legend, Kiwi Kraze, Crisis Force, Shadow of the Ninja, Power Blade, Sweet Home, etc. are all games I don't think I could really call obscure anymore.
Even unreleased, unfinished, unlicensed, and homebrew games are somewhat well known. Battle Kid, Bio Force Ape, Super Bat Puncher, D-Pad Hero, Aladdin, Bade Buster, Hero Quest, and so on.
I might be way off base, but I feel like most people who have any desire to know about the NES's more obscure games already know pretty much everything.

I got ya back OP
try to give ya some recs that havent been dropped in the thread yet -
crazy fun under rated or obscure gems -
Arkista's Ring
Athena
Legend of Kage
River City Ransom (why they never localized more of the Riki Kunio series on Nes other than Smash Dodge Ball is beyond me....)
Star Tropics
most people know about Shadowgate, Princess Tomato n Salad Kingdom, and Uninvited - but Deja Vu is IMO the best point and click style visual novel on the nes (ACE HARDING MOTHERFUCKERS)

i have a bunch of other suggestions but I wanna see how this thread plays out

>Underrated NES games
>No Mendel Palace (or Quinty in Japan)
You disappoint me /vr/.

Even thought many people know Mendel Palace as the first game that Satoshi Tajiri made few people actually played it in order to appreciate its awesomeness.

The american commercial is one of the weirdest ones I've ever seen for a japanese game.

Yume Penguin Monogatari from Konami (also fan-translated) is one the most original and enjoyable 8bit games I've ever played.

You can't set expectation for what people will mention in a thread 12 posts in. Now, if it had 200 posts and nobody mentioned it, he can say how disappointed he is.

I might catch heat for this but I think Amagon is a terribly under rated run'n'gun platformer for nes.

Does the eshop one play well? I've been thinking about picking it up on the 3DS.

It's too bad it didn't get the 3D classics treatment. Super Mario Bros 3 isn't even on the 3DS eshop.

personally i hated this game. i bought it after hearing good things and then found the game play to be mind numbingly frustrating. the jumping, the obstacles, and things like like flowing water and conveyer belts that either blast you off a million miles away, or keep you running a centimeter an hour (seriously i sometimes felt like i was running in place) drove me absolutely fucking nuts

as for my contribution to the thread i gotta say kickmaster is a great underrated nes title

The red background flickering was removed. I heard say it was because of epilepticia. IDK.
Otherwise, it plays like in the emulator (with sprite limit).

TBQH, I like it being portable, but I have more confort playing on the emulator with a keyboard controls because you got left/right more easily.

This is one of the few NES games I have two copies of. When I bought the second copy, I wasn't sure if I already owned it, but I wasn't going to pass it up and find out I was wrong, so I bought it. Very nice game. I was going to upload gameplay footage of it, but YouTube hates video game videos now. Everything is instaflagged by SOUND EFFECT.

Depending on who you ask, Werewolf: The Last Warrior is either an overlooked classic or one of the worst games on the console.
