Honestly I think Bob-omb Battlefield is the best stage. It's so big, and it feels like a big playground.

I pretty much hate any of the stages where you can fall to your death.

>Worst Stage
Wet Dry World
I just felt like it was such a mess of a stage. The town area was cool, but it felt like it was made out of left overs. At least the ideas were cool.

>Hardest Star
100 coins on Rainbow Road or whatever the last stage is called. Dear god, this game is easy to beat, but hard to 100%.

>> No.1326409

I always felt the music in 64 was so strange.

It was all really atmospheric, I suppose to go with the new 3D environments. They just feel out of place in the Mario Universe. Not bad, but not amazing either. There are a few gems though.

>> No.1326427

What if this game was released but, not as a Mario game? Would it have been as widely praised?

I feel like there are many flaws in this game. If a game ever needed a remake, the DS version not counting, it would be this game.

I would love to see Super Mario 64 Wii U.

There were a lot of stars I found hard, but for some reason, I can't think of one I had trouble with right now. I found Rainbow Ride pretty easy to be honest. I found Wing Mario Over the Rainbow a lot harder, but that's more about patience really. I don''t know.

>> No.1327091

Man, I still have dreams where I'm playing this game, but the "game" is more like an extension of my consciousness (I'm not sitting at the tv and playing, but it's all there is and I control it unconsciously) which really says a lot about how fluid and fun it is to just move around if you ask me.

It was also the first game to give me the feeling of vertigo when falling into the infinite blue sky. It scared me a lot how the camera would clip through walls sometimes and you'd see the sky and remember the stage is floating, the soles of my feet would tingle and my stomach would drop.

And man, the water levels, fuark. The eel terrified me, the manta ray terrified me, but it was really the draw distance for those things that made me shit myself. How they would pop into view out of nowhere is a big thing in my dreams. The eel clipping through the floor out of nowhere or swimming through the air and getting hit to death slowly (being trapped in him with post-hit invulnerability) is a recurring thing in my dreams.

Fuck man, I don't even have autism, but it's Ullullilia tier dreams.

I know what you mean. There is something about playing those low-resolution 3D games that stirs something in my imagination. I can play Super Mario 64 today and be entranced by the mystery of it all. I can look at the endless skies and seas and it just makes me wonder about the game world and stuff like that.

For some reason I find the backgrounds in this game really compelling. I love how Wet Dry World looks like a city...Is it Istanbul? But it's just fascinating standing at the edge and taking it all in. There's something about games like this that just feel boundless. I also like to just look at things with c-up (same with Zelda), it feels really atmospheric.

I don't know...It's like the visuals are low-res enough to feel like I'm actually there. What's odd is that the higher-res visuals are, the less atmospheric it often is for me. I don't totally understand it.

I never thought about it as a kid, but this game does have a mysterious quality to it. A lot of the levels feel lonely, like you're discovering and exploring places abandoned long ago. In the skybox you can see even more abandoned lands, lands not even you will touch. You never learn the purpose of these worlds, other than being used to hide stars. a lot of the levels are chock full of unnaturally placed platforming stage pieces that make the worlds feel cheap and empty

I'd also say Wet Dry World is the absolute worst because it just feels so lazy
like the section without the town is one of the worst 3d platforming level designs ever
the town is also just straight up weird, with it being enclosed with no sky, miniscule and a lack of life in it

maybe it comes from playing other n64 platformers, but the Super Mario 64 stages aren't exactly the best designed stages

a game dev i like gave a nice explanation on why he likes the souls series in terms of storytelling

Ore: Given that games are bigger than movies and books these days, what do you propose to change it or provide as an alternative?

McGrath: Oh, I don’t give a shit. That’s a stupid number. It’s a meaningless metric. It means large corporations have made a whole bunch of money. That reflects nothing on the actual art form. Zero.

Ore: Well, the fact that they’re making these games are –

McGrath: Yeah, they’re crap. Almost across the board. There are some that are good — one of them is Dark Souls.

Ore: How so, in the context of story and narrative?

McGrath: The start of the game where there’s “actually” a story is horrible. But for the rest of the game, you’re in a world that’s very weird and confusing, and there’s a fortress called Sen’s Fortress. I don’t know who Sen is. There’s no character named Sen in the game. The boss at the end of it is just a big iron golem. That exists as a thing in the game, it has a title which should be meaningful, but isn’t explained at all. The player figures it out. And by “figures it out” I mean he invents a story.

You can go on Reddit and find a really long discussion about what it meant, and it’s traced back to a 14th century Japanese emperor. Or not an emperor but a guy who had a castle and his name was Sen. And they’re like, "Maybe it’s that." And then other people posited very different explanations of what it could be. That’s really interesting — that’s a good story.
