what is the exact process on how to burn a dreamcast cdi file that will actually boot? I have been using cdi files that are stated to be selfboot, but for some reason, no matter what i do, the backups always show up as an audio cd.

i have tried imgburn, alcohol 120%, and discjuggler. all of the results i get are the same.

>> No.1318253

What is date of manufacture on the bottom of your Dreamcast? Some of them can be kinda funny about playing burned discs.

i have been using an emulator to verify if the cds will work on my dreamcast. i am away from my dreamcast at the moment

DiscJuggler is the major solution.

What guide are you using to burn your games?

>> No.1318264

>>1318261
for imgburn i used this tutorial :http://theisozone.com/tutorials/dreamcast/burning-and-backup/dreamcast-burning-cdi-2012-style/

for alcohol 120% i used this:http://www.1emulation.com/forums/topic/25432-the-end-all-be-all-dc-burning-guide/

and as for discjuggler, i never had a very trustworthy guide to go by, as many of them give different instructions.

I've been using 120 for years doing the same thing in that guide, never had a problem.

>> No.1318317

I've used all those. They all work. I personally prefer imgburn.

There are a few things that can cause this problem.

Wrong region. The DC won't warn you a game in the wrong region like pretty much every other console is just shows up as a CD.

Laser problem. Probably can be adjusted to work.

Incompatible CD-Rs. In particular on systems with picky lasers you may have to try a few brands before you find one that works well.

Download Utopia Boot Disk, burn it and see how that goes. Use whatever image burner you want, but I personally have been using 120 for years and never had a problem with it. I always had problems playing Dreamcast games that claim to self boot and Utopia Boot Disk would be the solution.

yeah, i think maybe i burned the discs properly, i'll just wait until i get to try the discs on a real dreamcast. this whole time i have just been trying to verify that the discs themselves are actually playable, but i suppose an emulator isn't going to get the job done. thanks though

Fuck the Boot disc. I hated using that shit.

Self-Boot FTW. They always worked for me.

Huh? Games are regionfree if they are burnt copies. Have an European DC, mainly played NTSC and NTSC-J on it.

I also used shitty CDs and they still worked. Must be the burner settings.

>> No.1318564

>>1318345
>regionfree
Only if they've been altered to be.

>shitty
If your definition of shitty means the cheap off brand disks that work with picky lasers as opposed to the name brand ones that don't then yes, shitty ones work

>burner settings
Nope, it's a an issue of compatibility between the laser and the disc. Burner settings have little if anything to do with it.

With Discjuggler:
Default tab
>New --> Burn Disc Image
>Source --> choose .cdi file

Advanced tab
>Mode --> Mode1/DVD
>(Overburn if necessary, usually is not)

Set speed to "optimal" if the option is available. No need to burn at lowest settings, that's a thing of the past.

Oh, and it'll say "It can only burn 700mb, should you continue?" click yes.
If it says there are errors that it can try to automatically fix click no.

Make sure you use the correct older version of IMGBurn, with the plugins etc in the correct place. Works for me. I still burn BoR discs when I'm bored with my Wii.

I used Dream Burner. It burned my DC games in minutes and best of all the games were able to boot as a stand alone. I didn't need the Utopia boot disc.

Your emulator might not like your PC optical drive, oddly enough. burn the disc for on a dreamcast, but for emulation try to use the cdi file.I'd make sure I had a dreamcast to test before you end up making unnecessary coasters/copies for friends/cat toys. If you can, I mean.

If you have a version 2 Dreamcast (mostly October 2000 and later) it won't play self booting CD images. It is a non mil-cd compatible.

No. I've been looking for years. Someone started working on it for NullDC a while back but nothing much came of it. There was homebrew code that used the mic so the information should all be out there somewhere but no one and put it all together.

I read something about the kallistiOS but I guess it's a homebrew OS for the DC. It still uses the vmu microphone I think.

You can just buy Seaman for under thirty dollars with the microphone and everything. I see it at my local game shop all the time. The mic even has the little green sponge on it.

KOS is a homebrew OS for developers. It's not just DC, but in reality its just DC. Some guy wrote some stuff that used the mic 10 years ago or so. Little progress has been made since then.

You can get it for far less...In the States. No one has it and shipping costs more than the mic.

That's it. It supports something like 1-2 functions like check status. But yeah, like I said, I think all the code needed is out there someone just needs to put it all together. But it looks like NullDC is dead. I gave up on it years ago and have been concentrating on collecting original hardware.

>> No.1322736

It should be obvious

check the silver label on the underside of the console, there should be a number in a circle. 0 or 1 will play burned disks, 2 won't, simple as that
