I'm sorry, but I feel the need to point out that Chrono Trigger was not spectacular. This game somehow makes everyone's #1 favorite retro vidya RPG. Compared to the snes final fantasy games, the overworld is wonky as shit. It's extremely linear, in a mega man choose which level you visit kind of way. It's also very short and easy. Fantastic music though

So a lot of my actual favorites are really obvious shit from my biggest childhood games like Chrono Trigger, Link's Awakening or Super Metroid or stuff like that, but let me post this fucking gem because it's one of the few retro video game songs I have on my MP3 player in its original format (I usually prefer covers and remixes)

This bad-ass fucking song is the ultimate 80s power ballad of shoot-em-up soundtracks. The best part? It doesn't loop until SIX AND A HALF MINUTES. This song is an enduro run of face-melting electro-synth awesomeness. As I recall, the song restarts every time you die, so it's the ultimate inspiration to keep playing to just hear more of this sweet-ass tune. Or I suppose you could just sit on the starting screen and do nothing for 6 minutes.

Anybody ever play Dark Void Zero? That shit was awesome, and I think its funny that a "joke" game reverse engineered from a modern game turned out to be the better purchase. I loved the fake backstory they perpetuated about the game being lost for decades, and I think there was some joke about a young Jimmy Fallon winning a contest to have his name in the game.
