What's /vr/'s opinion of the Art of Fighting series. When did it go wrong? And it did, with every sequel.

I really like the series and characters, but the first and second ones are just okay games, but 3 has beautiful animations and poor controls. I really wish SNK had the same love for AoF like they had with Fatal Fury, with the excellent MotW or RB series. The only thing I can do is select AoF team in every King of Fighters game.

3 did have the best graphics but goddamn the other fighters in that game were useless. The controls. It was awful!

I liked the characters but as a kid I was more into capcom than SNK (total opposite now) and I didnt like the SNES port of Art of fighting 1, I went back and played the original arcade version of it and its a better game but its still only okay.

Is it just me or is the AI in AOF 2 almost impossible to beat, even in the easiest setting?

I can't even beat the first fighter, no matter who it is.

AoF1

Still like the games and characters a ton, though. And some of the innovations AoF brought on were seen in later SNK games, so it's not all bad.

I love the series, but even I don't think it's very good.

Played the crap out of the first two; the third never showed up around here. SNK's first "serious" attempt at a fighter. The original Fatal Fury was a pretty clear SFII wannabe (though they definitely redeemed the series with FF2)
I like to think of it as the originator of lots of things we trake for granted now.

Taunts
Auxiliary gauge
Battle damage. Though you could argue for Vega losing his claw in SFII)
Super attacks
Off-plane strikes. Todo's (C+A?) punch would let him dodge around fireballs and strike
